For everyone asking if he kept things or not, you can click the auction link & browse the sale to check and/or see how much things sold for- items feat. on this video AND various items from previous vids & that were in the store. You just have to make an acct on the auction site. FYI- there’s no need to enter personal info/payment methods just to browse… only if you plan to bid on things in future, & U can always add that info later if you change ur mind. It’s pretty interesting to see how much things went for!

I always feel a little sad about lockers, wondering if the person died and it was forgotten. In this case, I would imagine the previous owner would be thrilled that Alex is the one who bought it. I lost one years ago because I was homeless and couldn't pay for it. Lost what little I had left from my childhood, like my favorite doll I had since I was five, and what little my kids had after we lost our home (including my son's entire collection of Transformers). (Long story short, landlord sold the house, and I didn't have enough time or money to pay a deposit on a new place, so I put everything in storage and moved into a hotel, but the hotel was so exoensive it took everything I could make and I couldn't pay for the storage unit and still feed my kids and keep a roof over their heads). It was devastating at the time. I've since come to terms with it, but I still get emotional about it sometimes. All I can do now is learn from last mistakes and never let it happen again.

And quite careless of contents. Like the comment about " glad he'd not stood on the antique windows!" Geez, when I had stuff in storage and had to look for things, I checked the boxes before attempting to stand on them! People downsize when they lose a spouse, and may not even remember they have a storage unit with items THEY treasure. Auto payments can take care of the bill, but then they die. Too many families don't give a damn. "Throw that old crap out!" I see it in families clearing out houses. (We set things on the curb and whoever wants it, takes it.) I've gotten beautiful antiques that way. But not all "soft" items should be dumped. I have a quilt my grandmother made that is valued at $3000.00. He'd dump it!

A lot of the suggestions below are valid. I've been working for a major storage company for 9 years . A lot of people can't let go of items that belonged to someone who died . Theyh also can't bring themselves to go through it , sort it cuz it's too painful. So, they end up paying thousands of dollars only for me to sell it when sojmething happens with their finances , they get sick, or die. During Covid I had a number of older units that were paid for years by older tenants go to auction cuz they fell off the map. I'm pretty sure a lot of them died and the families didn't know the units were there. You also get people hiding units from their spouses cuz the spouse tells themn to "get rid of their junk" , and they tell them they did but put it in the storage unit instead and pay cash every month. And unfortunately, hoarders are a big part of our business.

Alex, if this unit hooks you on some more storage auctions, I suggest you carry a few dust masks and a couple of the round security locks in your truck. That level of dust isn’t healthy, as you disturb it and often such units have rodent droppings too. Some facilities now use tumbler locks rather then padlock hasps, but in either case, once the office lets you in, unit security becomes your concern and for larger units you don’t want to leave it overnight without a lock.

You know the level of Roundup in the the land, air, and water would take 100 years for earth to naturally shed the poison off. I did mold remediation in commercial buildings. Fine dust like this with an open door will be fine so long as a man does not trim away inner nose hair and having facial hair is a good idea. The mask won't help with dust that fine. Rodent droppings when inside if you run into a bunch then run a fan for a bit. Don't fear things in life, have a positive attitude and most of all, wash you hands or wear gloves and don't touch your face if clean shaven or even worse cut out your nose hair. Those are natural defenses against dust and all other airborne things. If you go into things with fear or the idea of getting sick, you will bring it on you. When working in 45 min shifts with a respirator and full suit, some black mold would get thru and my nose hair was the last line of defense and never let me down. The waves coming off of all our smart phones are very dangerous and we all ignore that fact. Best of luck in this unprecedented times. I love anything old, even books missing the covers. I used to buy lockers and even had a good time when breaking even or losing a few bucks.

I get that you don't want to haul off stuff back home that you're just going to turn around and take to the dump in the end but with a deadline to clear out the entire locker, you'd do well to refrain from searching through every single box and bag and sorting out good from trash and just take everything home and sort it out on your own time.

Sorting: what you need for a unit of loose items like that is a stack of plastic lidded totes. As you find fragile items, like the yellow lamp, take the time to put it in a tote, even if It gets stacked outside temporarily, the lid keeps the product dry. Wrap it with some clothing that might clean up OK, like the bomber jacket. We’d line up totes and put media in one, tools in another, clothing (like the concert T) in a third, etc, right down a line. Shift those those fragile collectible toys right into totes, so they won’t be busted up in transport. Use the boxes and trash bags they were in for trash. One time saving tip is that If you handle it, put it in a container (save, trash, donate) don’t just re-stack it, that’s how your profit gets broken.. We use Shoebox size bins for coins, hot wheels, loose jewelry and the smalls, like the bottle openers, so that later we can work on them 1 small group at a time. Using a mix of large, regular and small bins helps with the initial sort, transport and storage space needed back at the warehouse, since they stack without damaging the contents, the way open top boxes do, with stuff sticking out the top. As much as possible, fill the totes so the lids can go on. If you start doing these routinely, create a routine, so it’s easier and faster, because sometimes you will want to buy more then 1 unit at the same sale, since one renter can have multiple units and you need to buy them all, so that matching pieces and parts will likely be there. Nothing worse then buying a unit were you can see the side of an antique $2000 dollar dresser and finding out the drawers were in the other unit, someone else got. Usually if multiple lockers were rented by 1 person, the facility will say so. If you get outbid on some, leave your contact info with the office or tape it to the other unit’s door suggesting the other bidder call you, so you can trade off or be on the lookout to buy/sell/trade with one another. It’s something nubies don’t think about.
@brianhenry2385
@brianhenry2385 2 года назад
In your case, size the majority of the totes to fit under your closed truck tonneau cover, with the lids on. That way you can transport in the rain, when you need to, with the truck bed covered. I predominantly use the Rubbermaid units, like the ones you washed. The lids are easy to spot and they stack well. I reuse the random mismatched totes and those with no lids, for sending item groups to auction, since the lids have to come off for auction preview anyway.

I love your videos because you are positive, upbeat and happy. I want to comment on what you said about how funny it would be to donate some things, buy the locker, only to find that you just bought your own donated items. My Family came so close to doing just that. We donated a large dining room table and 6 chairs to The Salvation Army. Then we decided that since they sell tables of all sizes, we would check to see if they had a smaller set. As we walked around, we spotted a table we were dramatically drawn to. From across the room, it looked very small. In looking at it and walking around it about 10 times, I said, no wonder we were drawn to it....its our table. They had just put it on the floor without the chairs. We had it in our dining room for close to 30 years. We did get a smaller table but I guess as we said goodbye to the table, it wanted to say goodbye to us. Maybe furniture does take on a new or 2nd life at times!😅

As a former storage mgr, a lot of units like that go because the owner goes to a nursing home, passes away, or is ill. They don’t just give it up. I’ve seen units that came up for sale that were filled with old tires, worn and dirty clothes, completely empty, with old freezers full of meat, you name it. You got a rare one. Often you will find a lot of tools and fishing gear of various ages. We had one guy get in using a family member’s passcode… as if cameras and passcode records don’t exist. He cut the lock and inventory tag (you do a rough inventory in the US- ie number of visible boxes, bags, or items you can see. You never touch the items if you’re doing your job the legal way.) and just took his stuff, turned the lock around and taped the inventory tag. I found it at lock check the next day. Needless to say, his family member got evicted immediately as they were on camera too.

Not even ten minutes into this video and I'm pretty confident I could tell you the story behind this unit. The person who rented this unit out was using it to store items he (and it is going to be a guy) would come across when cleaning out vacated rental units. When people are in a rush to leave or have limited moving resources, toys and other odd ball/bulky items is exactly what they leave behind. You probably are looking at 10 years worth of cleaned out rental units. Now why did it get to this condition? Probably because the guy simply lost interest in going through it. It was just easier to spend the thousand dollars on the unit a year than to go through it. Further, this unit was let go probably because the renter has passed. Likely moved to a care facility and the mail isn't getting forwarded so the family simply wasn't aware of this storage unit and the bill payment finally lapsed. Seriously, this is an off the books unit. The guy had an eye on things that might be worth keeping and he simply didn't have the means or resources to keep the items up. So they went to storage unit hell. Back in my military career there were times when I would have to clean out on base housing units. The single guys, they carrying what they can in a few duffle bags and leaving the rest. Because they wouldn't be allocated moving expenses. I was actually shocked by what some of these guys discarded and left behind. To this day I still use a clothes iron that I picked up in one of these unit cleanings. In my shed somewhere is a $350 film camera left behind. And I'm sure if I were to dig around my shed I'd probably find a few other nick knacks I picked up post vacated unit.

Alex, you are too funny. You get so excited especially when you find toys. Tells us you are very young at heart. Bet you Melissa will be excited, too. I'm 73 and have a storage unit that I've been paying a monthly fee, for over a year. I'm going to look into buying a small storage shed. Having it on our land. Start gifting things away. There are no antiques or vintage items. Thank you for the inspiration. Blessings. Rosie B. , Rio Grande Valley Texas USA.

I once had a neighbor in an apartment complex - a retired lady without a lot of funds. She had been making monthly payments on a storage unit in Texas for 25 years! (she used to have a job there) She STILL couldn't decide what to do with it. Her sister pointed out to her that if she had all the money she spent on 25 years of monthly payments, she would have enough to put a huge down payment on a nice little house for herself. Yikes, it's painful to think about!

Not sure if you figured it out, but in the He-man box, the silver disk was a turntable platter and the green thing I'm 99% sure was a christmas tree stand. I could be wrong but always fun to watch.

I was going to refer to the metal disk as a turn table or platter too. Had a very similar one mid 70's. Nice explore no?

What a wonderful find! What fun being a kid again with loads of exciting toy discoveries! I would have loved that white painted wood carved shabby cabinet next to white wire storage rack. I could see lots of potential with that piece, especially here in CA. When you sneezed 🤧, it spooked my dog and she left the room! 😆

I can seriously say that my son (Alex’s age) owned all of those toys. As he started growing out of playing with them I started selling at garage sales. I recall selling a huge box of only action figures. We never saved any. Our son’s Star Wars collection was much larger. I think about all the $$ spent 🤦🏻‍♀️.

I once saved a small amount of Starwars Lego figures from my bin of Lego figures for my friend who collected Starwars stuff. He was happy to get them and one of them was worth $35 alone on eBay. I spent 2 days with barely any sleep trying to save them before the bin was given to my cousin. It was worth it though I missed the opportunity to put the original blue spaceman back together that my older brother got as a kid. The spaceman looked like the one from the Lego Movie but wasn't. It was the original that character was based off of. My cousin is happy with it and loves everything in it. There were even 3 Call Of Duty Lego sets in there but in pieces so that was something they liked.

Just in case you don't know about "junk journaling" (making journals and paper crafting with "junk" paper) --it's a huge and ever-growing universe. You'll find buyers (Etsy/eBay) for old things like those old magazines and catalogs--and almost ANY old paperwork/ephemera that people tend to keep forever and for no good reason (lol): ledgers, log books, hand-written receipts, ticket stubs, old photographs, cookbooks, hand-written letters, envelopes, stamps (old is great--not necessarily collectable) old text books (with graphs, formulas, etc. are fun), foreign-language dictionaries--basically any old papers, tags, tickets--oh yeah--and broken jewelry--book bling don't ya know!! The books and catalogs that aren't fit for collectors are perfect for us bc we tear them up anyway-- You can sell them in bulk to people who will break them up and sell junk journal supply packets or break them down yourself and sell bundles.... One or two more ways to recoup your investment 💰💶💵💸 🤓😎

You have a great eye for spotting unexpected treasures, Alexander. I don't believe all of your allergies are due to tree pollen. Decades of dust and dirt are a major factor. You do quite well with mostly one-handed moving. Nice peek at the Mustang. Gotta see more Please sir. Best wishes to you and yours.
