1:00 I love this part. Percy was right to get this child to smile. Sweet man. 3:00 I think this is one of his better outfits here. He is the dirty hero and doesn't have nice clothes but he is still terribly handsome.
The scene of Percy's capture in the original novel was absolutely heartbreaking: while he's locked in prison the soldiers constantly made noise so he's deprived of sleep for weeks on end, and he's only given stale bread and water, which he delicately nibbles on and offers to share with Chauvelin, to the point where even HE feels remorseful for torturing him. By the time Marguerite visits, he's barely conscious, and after pretending to be fine for her sake, he finally passes out in her arms. Every time I read that bit, it makes me want to cry :'(
I am pretty sure in the original novel that Percy is never captured. Once in disguise he is beaten but those who were beating him didn't know it was him. Marguerite at the time is also quite sore as her feet are all cut up as she had been running without shoes.

For all fans who want more, the coolest thing I can think of, I think happened in one of the short stories. Maybe in The Adventures of the Scarlet Pimpernel. In many stories, Percy pays this shady, sickly homeless guy, Rateau, to make himself scarce, and then Percy impersonates him. His impression of Rateau is so good that people who know Rateau can't tell the difference, including Chauvelin. So Chauvelin decides to take care of this business once and for all. He has the real Rateau taken to be branded with a cattle iron so that he will forever be distinguishable from the impostor. Fortunately, Percy sees the whole thing, follows Rateau, and PAYS the brander to brand him as well. How awesome is that?!!!! If you don't get it, then allow me to rephrase this for you. Percy PAYED somebody to press scalding hot metal to his flesh, burning and melting the skin on his arm to scar into a perfect, but grotesque 'm'. His arm was probably tender for weeks. I'll bet it was puffy, red, and terribly scabby for a while after. And later, when his wife gets all teary-eyed at the sight of the pain Percy had inflicted upon himself in an action that could (and would) save many lives, Percy consoles her saying, "I don't mind. In fact, I am rather fond of it because this 'M' will always remind me of you, my fair Marguerite!" (I am paraphrasing, but you get the the idea). It doesn't need to be said that Percy saves everyone and fools Chauvelin until the end, at which point, he finally reveals himself to taunt his despicable and bitter enemy. You gotta love Sir Percy.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THAT!! I almost forgot how much I missed watching this movie!! A long time ago, I started reading The Scarlet Pimpernel but I gave up because I did the terrible thing of watching the movie first and not reading the book!! But this has brought me back to the realisation that I should indeed read the book and then I can’t wait to read the rest!! Thanks again!!
Before James Bond, there was Percy, the Scarlet Pimpernel: "Sink me! If you expect me to talk, well I will, but a claret or two would be more generous old chap!" Chauvelin: o_O "Darn, these English with their style and manners...get him a claret."
She begs him to tell them where the Doufan is; when he says he can't she immediately accepts that answer and her mind moves to finding another solution to get him out of prison. That speaks of great trust and love.
I wished this film was a true story. The sad truth of history is that the young Louis the XVII Dauphin King of France died in prison at the age of nine. There was no one to rescue him.
"Would you like to see some magic?" The poor kid looks terrified!! For a moment he looked unsure whether or not he wanted to like it was a trick question.
I do believe correct me if I’m wrong that the man who was supposed to pick him up was Armand, who Percy goes back for specifically because he didn’t show up.
If you are looking at his right arm when he talks to Tony you can see there is a lot of blood. Tony takes one look and protests Percy's decision to go back to Paris.
