The last vehicle I tuned up had a distributor, spark plug wires and one coil, so I knew I was going to need help changing the plugs in my 2013 Dodge Journey since I've looked in vain to find even one plug or plug wire on the vehicle for the five years I've owned it. I looked at several videos before I thankfully came across yours. You produce a superior video, clearly explaining and showing how to do every step. It gave me the confidence I needed to tackle the job which I completed successfully. My only screw up was breaking the locking clips on 2 of the coil pack connectors before I figured out how they released. Those are "locked" on now with zip ties. Hopefully they won't melt! With the upper half of the air intake manifold removed I noticed a small amount of oil dripping out of the ports, and or throttle body depending on its position. I can't imagine that is normal but was hoping this was caused by nothing more serious than a worn PCV valve. I did change the PCV valve along with cleaning the throttle body, after watching your 2 videos on those operations. Thanks so much for your well done informative videos. I'm a subscriber and will be back when another project is needed on my Journey.

The connectors can be something that give people a difficult time for sure. Once you get use to them they are easy to remove. There will always be some oil in the intake.....a little, just not alot. If you air filter starts to get oil on it then you have an issue. Many thanks for finding and for watching my videos and for commenting. Glad that I could help and many thanks for having subscribed and for following the channel.

It's been a while since I've worked on a vehicle and about time I got my son involved in the process anyway. Me explaining is just not the best since to explain I need to show and well he doesn't learn that way, he's a hands-on kid. These two videos are, imho, very well done and will help a great deal. Thanks for putting in the effort to make a very informative and straightforward Step by Step video it's greatly appreciated!!!

Thank you for doing this video. I recently completed my combined work of replacing the trouble prone oil filter housing with the updated Dorman O.E. Solutions aluminum housing. I also completed a modern engine tune up by changing the spark plugs, cleaning the throttle body, MAP sensor, and AIT sensor. I changed to the Dorman unit so I could also install the Baxter Performance canister to spin on oil filter adapter. This lessens the delay in oil flow to the cam areas in the first moments during startup. I’m looking for long term protection of my Pentastar engine in my ‘12 Chrysler 200 Touring convertible.

As this being me first time watching one of your videos, it was GREAT! You explained it very well and I appreciate that. The only thing that I may suggest is to list what the person needs before taking things apart. I didn't have a 6" extension so I had to put everything back together to go to Oriellys, then come back and repeat the process.

Its possible. Take a close look at the coil boots to see if you see a white dot....that would mean a burn hole and that can cause a skip under loads. Typically you would have a check engine light as well.

No too derail this thread, but I am very interested in this point as well... The owner's manual says 100k IIRC...I don't drive it too hard, but it just seems that 100k is a LONG time between fluid/filter changes on a vehicle...not to mention that there is no dipstick to even check the ATF level.... Thanks, Doc

As a owner of a 2014 Dodge Avenger, I want to thank you for the instructions and information. For the plugs, you say 100k, but what about years if I don't reach 100k? Would 6 years be ample, being my estimation of 60k will be achieved?
@WillownDocH
@WillownDocH 5 лет назад
I am wondering the same thing... bought a used 2011 3.6 with a build date of 12/2010 according to the sticker on the lower Driver's door sill. 71k on the car ( had 61900 when I bought it)...runs strong (Esp on E85!!) and is getting great mpg. Looks like it had the left head replaced and the throttle body housing says: Bosch with a date of 10-10-14. No codes on an OBD2 reader... Ok to wait 'till 100k on plugs being changed? Thanks for a Great vid !!! Doc PS: Just saw Your response to Joe's comment...think it means I'm ok to run to Dec 0f 2020 due to the 10 years statement in the owner's manual...

Thanks for the informative video.. I have a 2013 Journey R/T with only 41000 miles. Engine fuel system was flushed and now have a misfiring cylinder code. Its good to know that lifespan of spark plugs is 100000Kms.
@MotorCityMechanic
@MotorCityMechanic 7 лет назад
There are a few items that can cause the misfire......such as a bad coil pack. It comes down to being able to isolate which cylinder it is. Then you can try swapping plugs and coils to different cylinders to see if the misfire moves as well. You need to have a scanner that monitor the misfire so you can see it as it happens. Inspecting the coils as mentioned to see if there is a white burn mark thru the side of the boot is important. I have seen a few injectors that were bad. Then sometimes there is an issue with the valve train such as failed rocker arm needle bearings and damaged cam shafts. Thanks for watching the videos and make sure to subscribe

LOL spark plug 2 and 4 reading 8-45 counts God Knows whats that. Initially car was taken in for bad battery cell and they put three chemical cleaners to clean what they claimed were carbon deposits. And that when i had (CEL) come on. I had to pay $511 for new spark plugs. I drive a 2014 F-150 and have never had issues with crap that i dealt with Dodge. Had they told me of consequences of flushing fuel system i would have been aware. in a week i spend close to $1450 still made and thinking of getting different car.

Thanks for the video, I ended up taking mine to a mechanic to get P0306 Cylinder 6 misfire fixed, the fuel thing bothered me. Later reading the comments, I didn't have mess with it but good thing. They put in a new coil pack and 6 new spark plugs but 5 days later, Check Engine Light (CEL) came on. Brought it back to the shop and they dug into it more. Long story short, while the engine is hot, a leak test showed it being very leaky, over 0.50. They told me Chrysler has a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) out for the left cylinder head, 6? Chrysler has an extended warranty for just that head, 10 years/150,000 miles. 2011-2013 are the affected years I believe. So it should be free for me to get fixed. Putting this here in case others come across this video or google search. 2012 Dodge Avenger V6. +Trace 23 Morning. The torque for the spark plugs is 13 foot/lbs and the upper intake to lower intake bolts are 89 inch/lbs. Great video! 2011 Chrysler 200, I'm getting a cylinder #3 misfire code. From what I can tell, it looks like it's the center coil on the back side of the engine (toward the cab). Is that correct? I have 62K on her...should I replace the plug while I'm in it as well as the coil.....I know it would probably be smartest to replace all of them so I don't have to repeat this for a very long time. @MotorCityMechanic
@MotorCityMechanic 8 лет назад
+moparviens Evening, being that its a 3.6 liter engine....you will need the upper intake gaskets(x6). As far as cleaning the injectors......the cleaning isn't a physical cleaning that can be done with the injectors off. The cleaning is a special fluid being sprayed thru the injector while the engine is running and that requires a special cleaning apparatus and special fluid. Its not a do at home type of job. Thanks for the question and make sure to subscribe

For the most part I have pretty much covered all the common issues with the videos that I made on them. I organize the videos in the playlist section for the viewers to be able to find the needed video faster. Feel free to browse by engine size of vehicle.

I have a 2011 avenger, same engine....... I'm changing mine out at 50,000 miles which is what I was told is recommended?? It is a 2011 so I'm sure it probably needs it. I know the plugs are not cheap for this thing..... 7$ a piece ! Great video, very helpful.... I do have one question, you say in the video to bleed the fuel rail? It doesn't look like you need too? Did I miss something you were saying? Once again, great vid

How do you set the gap on the spark plugs
@MotorCityMechanic
@MotorCityMechanic 5 лет назад
I use a simple plug gapper that you can get at any auto parts store. Depending on the version.....typically you slide the spark plus along ramped portion of the tool until you reach the correct gap on the tool and then your done.

Hey so I have the R/T 2014 I almost got the upper intake off but I just have to unhook the wires and hoses by the throttle body but I saw the plugs near the back of the engine but my socket extension is too long and hits near the wipers. What length will fit and what size socket do I need? Im so close but ran out of day light.

great video, i'm gonna try and tune up my 2013 avenger, in the video it kinda went over the fuel injectors? do i need to really bleed fuel system? i dont want to get over my head. another comment i saw was that it was hard to reseat the resonator? what is that? i' m assuming it is where the manifold meets the intake ports? or am i wrong?
@MotorCityMechanic
@MotorCityMechanic 7 лет назад
If I made mention of the fuel injectors then I apologize. There is no need to touch the fuel system when just doing spark plugs. There are been a few videos in the best that I made multiple videos from so sometime in editing I may have forgotten to take a clip out. The resonator is the plastic pipe from the air filter to the throttle body. Its the lining it up and seating it on the mounting studs.

hey i have a question.. i have this same car and it has a stall when i turn the ac on or give gas what can the problems be ?
@michaeljohnson2524
@michaeljohnson2524 5 лет назад
Would you know why my car happens to shut off whenever I come to a stop sometimes it will either hesitate and the RPMs will get really low but it will reset and go back to normal or it will just hesitate and shut off i’ve scanned it for codes and only codes that show are The oil pressure sensor and the transmission fluid pressure sensor/switch. Btw it never shuts off when driving just when going slow and coming to a stop
@MotorCityMechanic
@MotorCityMechanic 5 лет назад
Not sure the year, make, model and engine.....if its a late model 4 cylinder then make sure to check the oil level. Depending on the engine.....low oil can cause it to stall when going around corners....or coming to a stop for instance. Otherwise nothing else is coming to mind at the moment. It would have to be something that gets checked in person. Thanks for asking and make sure to subscribe

what spark plugs do you recommend as replacements on this motor expecting to get 100k miles
@MotorCityMechanic

+Josephuskikit Fred Champion RER8ZWYCB4 (9407) Iridium Spark Plug. I highly recommend the OEM plugs. That's my opinion and what I would personally use if it was my very own vehicle. These plugs and engine where matched together and work great. Thanks for the question and for checking out the video. Make sure to subscribe if you haven't already. Thanks again

question. I have a 2014 ram 1500 with the 3.6 liter 24v other than the intake cover being a little different I think it's pretty much the same. is the Avenger a 12v or 24v and would there be any difference on changing the spark plugs
@MotorCityMechanic

@MotorCityMechanic

First thing you need to do is have the codes checked. We need to see what code caused the light to come on. It could be caused by numerous items. You can check with your local auto parts store and they will retrieve the codes free of charge.

I just came across this video. I have a 2013 Chrysler 200 Limited with the 3.6. Ive been having a problem that no one can figure out. When i am coming to a stop light and i start to slow down, RPM's start to jump around going really low and once in a while stall when i stop. I've also noticed if i'm driving and let off the throttle the motor kind of stutters. Has anyone heard of this or experience this issue?? I'm at a loss lol

Great video! My wife has a 12 Avenger R/T @94k miles...showing some odd codes on "misfires" but not any specific cylinder. Ran some lucas oil through/reset but it came back. Due for plugs anyway at this age so I'm gonna get into it. I think I know the answer already but is there an easy way to test these coil packs (or anything else I should) while I have it opened up? Also, she was getting a Cylinder 1 misfire at around 35k miles and they completely replaced the heads in response to the TSB....something about narrow channels in the head not to spec on some of the heads machined out of Mexico..so I am pretty confident it isn't that...

@MotorCityMechanic

However, you could use a short extension, put it on your spark plug socket, stick it in the hole, and squeeze your ratchet on it to pop it loose

+Justin Bray it's recommended while you have it apart. I would say use your judgement and look at the seals and see if they are flat or if they still extend past the groove. Higher mileage vehicle for sure....lower mileage vehicles I would inspect
