Today we will be checking on a possible cause for camshaft sensor related codes that is mechanical and not electrical. Common codes that could be related to a bad camshaft phaser are P0340, P0344, P0345, P0369, P0390, P0394, P0365, and P0349.

Great video and explanation most videos do not show you the failure points just replacement. Have you ever tried a socket like the one used to replace a heater element in a electric hot water heater its like a tubing thats been pressed into square socket ends they tend to be thinner then a thin walled socket and usually have a hole in them to insert a small bar or screw driver to turn them it may fit in the actuator hole. The wall size on what I have range between 1 and 2 millimeter.

@@MotorCityMechanic Excellent video, thank you for your insight! I recently replaced all of my cam followers and lash adjusters on our 2012 Jeep wrangler at 140k miles as we had one that was just starting to fail. Ran great for 3000 miles, but am now getting P0340. P0365, P018 and P019 codes all at the same time. Extended crank and momentary shudder sometimes after the engine fires up. These are opposite banks, so possibly 2 unrelated issues - or are they? Any insight on if these are related, and which bank to start diagnosing first? Oil pressure is normal, and when I was inside the motor, there was no damage to camshafts - we had caught the failed cam follower in time before it did any damage to the lobe. The camshaft reluctor (pickup) wheels did have some metallic buildup that was wiped clean but did not seem excessive, and common compared to what I have seen from other videos. Thanks in advance for any advice! - Jerry

I am a competent mechanic of over 30 yrs. so your instructions were easy to follow and my time was well spent watching them. Thank you. My problem is the jeep will not fire off now. R2 the cam sensors, the crank sensor, the Inlet air temp sensor, and ck all thge engine and body grounds. I didnt do anything diffent on the disassembly and had no left over parts. Would a bad phaser keep it from firing? I am leaning towad the notches on the back of the cam are not sending the signal to the tpm. I bought the cam on amazon so that ones on me. any info on any more troubleshooting before i tear it all down agaito ck cam and phasers on the rt side would be appreciated.

Wait!! I think you still can remove the solenoid to check it. It looks like there is enough room to make two paint marks, one on the oil control valve and one just on the phaser body and use a bore scope or good camera to monitor if the paint marks stay aligned or move while cranking the engine over in clear flood mode or something. I have a van with over 200k and thought about long term issues but working in a shop I see several other customers over 200k and have only come across this issue once when the customer ran out of oil due to the oil cooler and had metal shaving in the oil. The customer declined repairs so I never got the chance to take the engine apart. It was also very sludged up which only seems to happen when oil changes are way too extended as they don't tend to sludge easily. Great video and something to look out for.

@@mikegordon3436 I have a 2011 Chrysler T&C. I had the cylinder head recall right after they came out, and I haven't had an issue internally. The problem is everything attached to the engine that you have to worry about, but those parts are cheap to replace. These engines just like to have the oil changed regularly, and they seem to run great.
@MoparDan

David, as a DIYer I'm following my late Dad's advice to change oil fairly often in my '12 Chrysler 200 Touring convertible precisely because of what could go wrong with any of the cam phasers. My Pentastar engine has 70,872 miles on it and I use Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5W-30 oil exclusively. I am also considering replacing the oil cooler/oil filter housing with the aluminum housing Dorman kit to prevent oil-leaking problems in the future. This car is my retirement ride and I like it a lot.

I changed rockers on one bank last weekend. I’m getting rough running and codes now. Bought a scan tool to do a cam/crank relearn. Will see how that goes. Thanks for the explanation of how the phasers work and how to test them. My engine has 140,000 miles. 2015 Dodge Grand Caravan. I did not change the cam. Only one rocker was bad and cam wear on the lobe looked minor.
@garykline2500
@garykline2500 6 месяцев назад
Which way did you take the rocker out? Removing the timing chain, taking the cam shaft off etc. or did you loosen one/two cam caps and slide the rocker out. If the latter, any chance the camshaft wasn't seated fully when you went to torque down the cam caps from the tension of the timing chain and it was left slightly raised in the channel?
@Richptl1
@Richptl1 6 месяцев назад
@@garykline2500 I used the phaser lock and tensioner release tools. Slid the phasers off but did not remove the chain. I ordered a new intake cam, phaser, and oil control valve. The lobe with the bad rocker looked a bit chewed up.

Fantastically good video as always! In fact, my latest video is a shoutout to your channel, simply because it’s the best for rocker, cooler, and oil pump repair guides! Couple of points: As you know, we only do Promasters and most are commercial. I’ve found that the limit is between 550 and 600k miles. Assuming you address the rockers and oil cooler and dont overheat it, it’ll run fine till the rings start getting worn enough to merit a new engine. Will still run fine after 600k, but power and mpg will start to suffer. And when I replace engines, I buy 100k used ones for $2000, do the AH rockers before I put them in, and they go to 550k. Basically, the pentastar doesnt care about miles! Second point: We’ve never fought with P0340, but twice now I’ve fought and failed on P0016 and P0017. I’m guessing a failed phaser wouldnt code the same way, but it might. Let me paint a picture: dealer had custys van for close to 2 years! Chasing P0016. Replaced EVERYTHING including the PCM, ran dedicated wires to the CPS, multiple cams and phasers. Finally talked the custy into throwing a Jasper at it! Didnt fix it. Star case opened. Engineers visited. Dealer threw a SECOND Jasper at it. Still coded. Dealer kicked custy out with no resolution. Came to me. I dicked with it a while, verified everything. Failed. Sold the customer a midlevel scanner that would reset the code, and spent a proper amount of time reassuring them that it was liveable, and how to reset, and monitor pids to make them feel ok about. They are still driving it - it’s fine. That job was, to me, a complete fail regardless of the happy ending. We saw another P0016 where a quickie oil change place had double filled the crankcase, which frothed the oil. That custy got a new motor out of it. Anyway, I’d like to know if you think it’s possible that the computer could code in both ways for the same phaser problem. Occurs to me it could, depending on if the pin was stuck locked, or stuck unlocked. But I’m unsure. Thoughts?

When you use the tools to decompress the chain tensioner on left side is it common that you don't have to use the pick tool again? I was able to just slide the wedge between guide and end of cam shaft and the tensioner went back in with out using the pick n pull tool in the little hole. I understand it's like a hydraulic tensioner so I'm hoping that when I'm able to start engine the oil will pressurize the tensioner back to normal?? I hope this makes sense the way I described it and that I'm all set. Thank you

Also don't forget to check for loose/missing oil galley bolts in the end of the head, right under the sprockets.

For sure! Had one come in with one missing, luckily I found it not too far down….was able to remove it after removing the cam phaser. I might need to do a video on this issue now that you mentioned it

I recently heard about checking for this - I wish I knew to do that on the other 3.6 work I've done in the past. It should have a TSB. All there is is a star case - hard to find @@MotorCityMechanic

Question and I apologize if I missed the answer in the video. If the pin was stuck from debris, couldn't it just be cleaned out and reinstalled rather than replaced? I have 2 vehicles with 3.6l and your videos have been lifesavers (rocker arms on one, oil pump on the other). Best quality tutorials I've come across. Thanks David!

You could try that but you spend a lot of time getting to that part that I personally don’t want to do it twice. Plus with 200,000 miles that lock pin has been doing a lot of moving over that time and some wear might be present. Thanks for always watching

I wondered that too. There’s nothing in there to go bad, other than the pin.

I’ve had this problem for the last 3 years, it started at 300,000 miles and now I have 465,000 it only happens once a month and when it does it goes into limp mode once I restart the truck it will come out of limp mode and the check engine light goes off after 3 or 4 cycles. Codes are p0390 p0394

Please help! Have cam code after installing a Baxter oil filter adapter. The adapter leaked so had to put the cartridge style filter back in however this is after cutting the bypass valve off to fit the adapter. Drove the jeep about 30 miles with it like that (I’m assuming not filtering the oil) and that’s when the codes started. My mechanic has had the vehicle for 3 weeks now and can’t figure it out. 3.6.
