Those early launch edition vehicles, must be prepared for "glitches" and have patience to get it right. My hope is that all this planning will make it possible for very solid, and less likely to have glitches. Frankly, perfection is extremely unlikely, however, a robust vehicle with very few problems is the goal. Seeing a Deloran on the side of the road, waiting for a tow truck doesn't inspire me to think about purchasing one. Aptera needs to be aware that every failure hurts future sales. So keeping them rolling is very important. I intend to spend next summer on the road in my Aptera, launch edition, and hope glitches are minimal. Keeping improving as it evolves is the right approach, and that will result in many people noticing and buying the vehicles. The order backlog should grow, for the first years, demand outstriping supply is fine with me. Building a second assembly plant in the southeast will be a no brainer.

To me the interview is appreciated for not so much the actual information (though it is very helpful) but the tone and thoughtfulness of Chris Anthony’s explanation of how things are coming together. I’d rather hear an honest and positive response to the questions that still acknowledges the series of challenges ahead. I have seen other CEO’s sound like political candidates running for office with boiler plate answers and hyperbolic visions of how they will “overtake Tesla” next year (thinking of Mary Barra & Peter Rawlinson) and who just say what the public and Wall Street want to hear. Bringing up Tesla is a prime example of a company that was absolutely dismissed by EVERYONE and constantly missed their targets but today is one of maybe 2-3 EV manufacturers that actually make a profit on their cars. For me, I am invested in Aptera succeeding because of their very intelligent approach to ramping up the company and will patiently wait for those first cars to be delivered. I think that many other Aptera accelerators will share my enthusiasm, and willingness to get our production SEV sooner, even if it means that we are "Beta testers", and may have to update a few early (small) bugs in our Aptera EVs. Over 48,000 reservations, and climbing! I believe that still, making a Launch Edition (LE) reservation, allows you to jump ahead of well over 75% of that waiting line. If you already have another reservation for a different, preferred configuration, you can just keep it in play and trade your sweet LE in (or easily sell it), when your dream build gets into production, and your reservation number comes up! Soon, the LE promise of a priority build, will be going bye bye, so do not miss out this opportunity to get behind the wheel of one of those first 6 to 12K Apterae that will be hitting the road next year!

~$40K 2 seater with no roof racks or hitch option? I would say extremely in efficient. At 40 mpg, my 5 seater PHEV with hitch is cheaper to run on gasoline so I almost never plug it in. Pulls our smallest boat(s) to the lake plus camping equipment for longer weekends. Pulls bigger loads from HomeDepot. When I pickup family or friends, if there's additional people needing a lift no problem. Almost 600 mile range, refills in 5 minutes. No winter heat or deicing limits. I think new it was around $40K, I bought used for $12.7K. Aptera cannot do any of that. A 2 seater should be around $20K.
@oliverheinen5440
@oliverheinen5440 Месяц назад
@@artsmith103 your comparison doesn’t make sense. If you need a family car, roof rack and towing capability the Aptera just isn’t meant for you. Same as a Ferrari wouldn’t suit your needs. At least here in Europe almost no one needs a roof rack or towing capability. Most people here just use their cars to get to work and back and doing so usually they’re alone. Comparing the price to a used car also doesn’t make sense. I bet you could get a relatively efficient used ICEV for almost free if you’re willing to make the right compromises. Coming to fuel efficiency now your car uses 40 mpg which is around 6L/100km which would equal around 10,80€/100km with gasoline being around 1,80€/L. The Aptera is said to have a fuel economy of around 100 wh/m which would equal around 6,25 kWh/ 100km and around 1,70€/ 100km when calculating with 25€ct/kWh. A Tesla model 3 is said to use 20 kWh / 100km which would cost around 5€. That doesn’t include charging through the integrated solar panels for the Aptera. For me the Aptera would be the perfekt fit. And just because your car suits your personal needs better that doesn’t make it an efficient car.

@artsmith103 Месяц назад
@@oliverheinen5440 For starters, cost of electricity is typically ~33% of energy cost. Battery lifecycle is ~66%. So in USA, we would triple electric cost to determine $$/mile. The 10 mile/kWh has never been demonstrated. I suspect closer to 8. Aptera refuses for 3yrs to demonstrate on local roads with proper additional weight to account for smaller battery. I've done quite a bit of solar install estimating annual kWh for both residential and 18V. I'm expecting ~3 peak equivalent hrs/day, 365 basis so 2.1 kWh/day, 17 miles/day. Only a little better than proposed $900 lifetime cost. As a young person you should be doing more with more people. Don't get sucked into less is more to patronize someone else's agenda. I haven't stayed in Europe in a long time but they used to be famous using midsize cars to tow a lot more small stuff than Americans do.

My wife & I drive about 1000 miles/yr. so our car is in the garage 99%. If we need to travel far, we fly. Why buy power walls when we could use our car battery? That's a good question. I imagine it's off-the-shelf parts, especially when you consider that Aptera supports Right-to-Repair. Regardless, because energy that goes into the friction brakes is energy that can't go back to the battery, the majority of braking will be regenerative breaking via using the motors as generators. The times where the brake pads would be used would be for emergency braking and for very low speeds where the generated rotating magnetic fields are too slow for the motors to convert. The mechanical brakes are going to last a long time, as the majority of braking will be done through electromagnetic means. Still, what brakes are used is something I'm now curious about.

So, first PI vehicle in August/September timeframe, six to nine months for production validation and testing. 😪 The company has grown from a "Mom and Pop Shop perspective" to a world car view with participation by world class partners. Glad to see the metamorphosis. Also glad they took the advice to build to scale. Now hope they take a lesson from GM's mistakes in releasing a vehicle to the market before its time. (Battery issue with the Bolt and quality issue(s) with the Blazer) With deep pockets you can recover from this kind of market failure. Not so if on a shoestring, at volume, production budget as rework/do overs more expensive than doing it right the first time. Aptera has 3 things going for it. First is the ability to charge with a regular outlet no special equipment needed. 15 ft extension cord and I'm good to go. Second is the Solar charging which will limit (not eliminate) my need to charge at all. I only drive 7,000 miles per year. Third is the efficiency. There is no doubt that the Aptera will be the most efficient vehicle on the road. It is by far the major focus of the vehicle's design. You're correct in one area. There is still a lot we don't know about the final numbers of the vehicle. All claims Aptera is making need to be taken with a grain of salt. Until the PI vehicles are made and tested we don't know anything for sure. All we can have is optimism and hope that their claims are relatively accurate. Another RU-vidr did a thorough analysis of Aptera solar exposure. He also came up with ~3 peak equivalent hrs/day. Aptera has refused to demo performance numbers for years. It's their main marketing claim and they won't back it up, ever!! I think they're ashamed to show there is a small battery in the test vehicles, no regenerative braking, and inadequate cooling to survive 2hrs of test driving. I'd even be willing to add 30% to their results in anticipation of regenerative braking. Most PHEV recharge with 120V. I recharge less than 1/mo. One thing I have been wondering about the price: If Aptera can be solvent selling 6000 vehicles a year, how low can they be sold for if the break even point was 8k or 12k a year?
@Fairburne69
@Fairburne69 Месяц назад
Just in case I am taking your post out of context I want to say. I'M SORRY ahead of time. I may be reading something into your comment that you didn't intend. "Solvency is the ability of a company to meet its long-term financial obligations. When analysts wish to know more about the solvency of a company, they look at the total value of its assets compared to the total liabilities held. (((An organization is considered solvent when its current assets exceed current liabilities."))) If they want to expand and grow then being solvent isn't necessarily enough. They need more money to invest back into the company. Produce more vehicles. Build more factories around the US and the world etc. If I am understanding solvency correctly you just need to get past the break even point. I would love to get the LE Aptera for $28,000 instead of $33000? Sure. But Aptera is a business. They want to make a profit and grow. Every business has to ride the fine line of making a product affordable while charging enough to make a profit. I work for a seafood restaurant. I manage the books and have a really good grasp of the finances. Do you know how many times I have heard people say, "This place is a gold mine"? If they saw what we spent for the food and then how much we charged for the food they would think, "Holy crap this is a gold mine." Well I can tell you its not. Over the course of the year it is barely solvent. The yearly asset compared to the yearly liabilities is about break even. And if the company does have a good year all of that money goes back into the maintenance of the business. So what is my point. We are not privy to the Balance Sheets and P&L statements of Aptera. We also don't know exactly what their plans are and how much money they will need to execute said plans. I think we should be careful before we judge them on how much they are charging for their vehicle.

If you're not prepared to maintain your code after it is released, and quickly, you're going to fail. So I agree with Chris. Definitely you want to concentrate on safety and stability first and foremost. But software is definitely something that is best tested by releasing it to the users as quickly as possible. They will find things your testers never even thought of. And if you can develop things like the cooling system or the camping kit after you have a customer base to try it out on, I'll bet that will be helpful too.

@danielthompson3928
@danielthompson3928 Месяц назад
Is it though? Because you are making it sound like they need the money to build 48k cars before they start but that makes no sense. They need the money for the PI builds up front but the money for ongoing manufacturing can come from ongoing shipments. If they can move 200 cars a week at an average of $35-40k a pop that should provide the funding to build more vehicles as they go. Plus, the moment you start making sales it opens up opportunities to take advantage of more grants and investment opportunities. The reason other companies are failing based on what he is saying is that they never planned to meet their break even. So although the are shipping cars they are unable to build cars, scale and sell cars and pay for all of it as they go because it is all too overwhelming. Making adjustments on a moving plane does in fact sound more complex than making adjustments prior to lift off to me.

I like how he makes the excuse for the delay because they thought 3k to 4k vehicles a year was okay when they started but they wanted to up it to 10k year due to all the reservations. That makes total sense for a company with deep pockets. For them, they should’ve kept to the plan to get vehicles out and money coming in. Now it’s 2024 with a PI build coming sometime. Maybe July, August or even Sept. But having learned my lesson from their overpromises I’ll be pleasantly surprised if it’s out before Thanksgiving.

Except they found out break-even was 6k a year. So they would be going in more debt while building and have to go into more debt to get out of debt because the money it costs to build the 4k cars would exceed the money they make from the 4k cars. I understand everyone wanting them to rush but proper planning is very important. Figuring it out as you go along is not always a viable option.
