We tow a 2015 GMC Acadia. Run for 5 minutes while hooking up, pull 3 fuses, put key in ACC, transmission in neutral and we're good to go. For braking we use Ready Brake, which is a surge brake system, not electronics to go bad, no power needed. Works well and is easy to use from one vehicle to another.

We have two vehicles so we chose a portable RVI3 braking system to easily transfer between both vehicles. One is a 2009 Jeep Wrangler and the other is a 2017 Buick Envision. Both vehicles do not require any modifications and are simple to setup. To avoid discharging the battery we have a RVI Towed Battery Charger installed. By doing this, we do not have to pull any fuses (Envision) or remove the ground cable (Wrangler) because the battery is continuously charged from the motorhome. Both vehicles do not require stopping to lubricate the transmission. We like the proportional RVI3 braking system because it also has a TPMS system available. This way the condition of the motorhome and towed vehicle tires as well as the braking response are always monitored on a provided tablet .

I told my Subaru Crosstrek manual 2016 Premium Edition behind many different motorhomes considering I'm an RV transporter the only modifications I've made who was putting in a charge line to keep my battery charged and pulling the radio fuse because that was drawing so much amperage it was killing my battery but other than the obvious base plate that's all I did it tows wonderfully no death wobble or anyting.

Commenting for my previous comment on the Part 1 towing video. I had asked about the red tow hook inserts and how you did that. This is exactly what I would love to do for my trailhawk as I have the same metal pipes protruding from bumper. Really really great engineering right here and what you had done with your red tow hooks. This helps so much seeing what you have done. Looks like I still need to get my hands on (2) red tow hooks and then do as you had done with additional adapter inserts.
@Rvlove
@Rvlove 3 года назад
Yes, fortunately, we did this all as part of the same process, so we already had the hooks. Hope you can find an extra set. Glad you liked the idea. -M

Got my extra blue ox inserts from the dealer that sold me the rv. The red hooks had to be removed for the baseplate installation. Next find a dependable welding shop. Save yourself some labor fees by cutting the hooks yourself and doing the grinding. Now I can have the vampire teeth back on my Trailhawk. That's what my grandson calls them 🤪👍🏾🧛🏾‍♂️

We flat tow a 2014 Jeep Trailhawk and have not noticed any wobble. The installation was done at Camping World, so not sure if anything was added to avoid it from happening, but we don't have to do any additional steps. We went with the Brakebuddy Vantage Select breaking system that has the option of full or proportional breaking and also has a remote that plugs into the outlet in the cab of the motorhome for adjustment on the fly if needed. Not as easy as your system, but haven't had any problem so far. Another added expense, but well worth it, is a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS). Ours is Pressure Pro. I added sensors to all tires so while going down the road I will be notified if any tire looses or gains pressure or starts to overheat. I also like being able to see the exact pressure in each tire at a glance. The damage a blown tire can cause could be far more than the cost of the TPMS. Even though my rear camera shows the car, I would hate to pull it with a flat tire and not know it. You haven't mentioned a TPMS unless I missed a previous video. I was wondering if you use one, and if so, which one, and if not, why not? I am seriously thinking of doing the same thing to my tow hooks. Thank you for all the great info.
@Rvlove
@Rvlove 6 лет назад
Hello Carl, Thank you for the great additions with your comments. Glad to hear that you have not experienced the wobble. We had heard that not all experience it, but wanted to be safe. Speaking of safe. Yes... we think TPMS systems are great, and fully plan on installing one of those systems in the near future, but have not done it yet. Hopefully soon. In the mean time, I am very diligent about checking my tires before every drive.

Thanks for the reply. As for the tow hooks, since we have the Roadmaster Falcon All Terrain, purchased before the Nighthawk came out, darn it, I called Roadmaster and if I send in my tow hooks they will fix them like yours for $83.97 each. Sure beats them sitting in a box and not being used.

Our toad is a 2009 Honda CRV EXL. We use an older 'between the seat' system that senses de-acceleration to apply the brakes proportionally. Required a bit of trial and error to get it calibrated properly. Open for questions. :)

Excellent vid! We are towing our 2016 GMC Canyon P/U. it is the dual cab, short bed 4X4. Additionally, we have the exact setup as yours and it has been stellar. We went to Vancouver, WA to have it installed by RoadMaster last year and they certainly know what they are doing. Our Canyon is about 200-300 pounds heavier than the Trailhawk, but does not require as many steps to place into neutral for towing. NOTE: Only the 4X4 Canyon is towable! Both the Jeep’s and the small P/U’s have great utility once at the campsite.....

Hi guys!! Well I finally bought a toad to pull along behind me 4 down. Retiring the motorcycle , So I bought a 2012 Chevy Equinox LTZ. Very low miles, loaded with very similar options to your Jeep. I'm having the tow system installed in August. It'll be a roadmaster Falcon all-terrain tow bar. I'm almost settled on the BrakebuddyII for the brake system. Install cost will be about the same as you stated in this video. Besides you recommending the non-binding tow system , Some other good friends have been using the Falson for years with no issues. I'll send pics of the car later today.
@Rvlove

Hi Vin - wow that's a big decision for you! You will miss your motorcycle I am sure, good for you! Yes the Falcon is non-binding too, you will love it - it's very much like our Nighthawk (no lights though). Congrats on your new setup, look forward to seeing the pics!

Update: I decided to go with the Invisibrake setup. I would have to come up with storage space if I went with the brake buddy. When I left the installer towing the car the first time I was making a sharp corner and caught a car tailgating me super close........haha, it was my car!! Took me a second to realize it!! see you at the premier.

Good vid, but for a Diesel Pusher with air brakes, the Air Force One is the best system.
@Rvlove
@Rvlove 6 лет назад
Air Force One is a popular and well reviewed option, but is not the best for everyone that has air brakes. Have heard many people who are not comfortable tapping into the air lines of their coach, and don't like the larger install required. Have definitely heard a number of folks say they love it though.

This tow bar has an integrated surge system that uses a cable to pull the toad brake pedal. It actually looks like a good simple system and very cost effective. I am leaning towards this for towing our JK or our Grand Cherokee.

Our invisabrake would apply the toad brakes lights come on but our brake lights come on when the exhaust brake came on. Every little hill on the highway that exhaust would come hold our speed the toad would brake also. I called Roadmaster and their solution was to turn of the exhaust brake Plus twice the Invisabrake applied the breaks when it wasn't attached to the motorhome and there is long running thread on IRV2 about the problem.

I had to take a couple days to think about the complexity of the Jeep. The tow system is fine and simple, but the Jeep.. I love the Jeep in many ways, but is there a way for a shop to just gut the electronics and go to a manual T transfer case? It would just make this jeeps future look bulletproof.Simple is better, while much learned from legacy would carry over. Hmm, just figured out why SMI sold to Demco, the patents ran out on SMI, now anyone can copy it.

Hi Marc! Even though my wife and I have a diesel pickup with a 5th Wheel, this video was very informative! You reminded me that using the gears (and the exhaust brake in my case) is the best way to slow down when rving. Hope all your travels have been safe and adventurous at the same time. Heather and I will venture out for our first trip this next week! We'll go to just outside Coulee City, WA to Sun Lakes Park Resort, where we'll hook up for the first time, and ride our bikes in and around the park.This is about 100 miles away from our home town of Spokane Valley, WA. Here are details about what we'll be using to get there: 2013 Keystone Montana 3150RL (Hickory Package), and a 2011 Dodge Ram Laramie Longhorn 4X4 diesel pickup. We bought them as a package from a fellow who put 13,000 miles on the Montana, then got injured. Nice fellow who was meticulous about everything; we are blessed to have found this! Thanks for your help in the past with what to look for, and for sharing your great attitude about travel. Blessings, Bob

Marc great vlog . When your towing your Jeep how do the brakes work if the engine isn't running or are the brakes not power brakes ? I'm not an RV'er and never will be . For decades while driving even in town I always turn on my head lights for safety even on a sunny day . When I was working I was a commuter & some people at work use to make fun of me for driving in to work with all my lights on . I use to tell them look in your rear view mirror and if you see a vehicle behind you that has lights on you will see the lights first before you see the vehicle .
@Rvlove
@Rvlove 6 лет назад
Hello Bob, Thank you. The Jeep does have power brakes, but the Invisibrake installation is such that it actually energizes the power brakes of the Jeep without the engine running. Pretty awesome. We tend to drive with lights on as well. Great safety. Just look at how many cars now come standard with daytime running lights. Same with motorcycles, the lights are always on. Like you said, it just helps you stay visible from a much greater distance. Thanks for your comment.

The Invisibrake control module ties into a vacuum hose in the towed vehicle. The system generates it's own vacuum, utilizing the vacuum assist for the brakes.

You said make sharp turns both left/right to make sure the tow bars lock. How sharp of turns? RV parks don't usually have that much room to manuver around in.
@Rvlove
@Rvlove 4 года назад
I crank the wheel (almost to lock) each direction, and the swing of the RV locks the bars without even leaving my lane of traffic when moving slowly. It takes surprisingly little space if moving at super slow speed, which you will want to be moving very slow of course.
@laurawyant6181
@laurawyant6181 4 года назад
We bought a 2001 Jeep, which was used as a Toad. It was probably custom fit (level is seriously important) to THEIR moho. We towed it home using our pickup, which is maybe why (not level) the bars didn't lock in right... and/or... It turns out that the manufacturer recommends replacing the tow bar part after 50,000 - 75K miles, so we're going to replace that part. Especially as the one that came with the Jeep is a stinger rather than the ball hitch type. -qqq-11qqq

Hello. If you haven't already, check out the related blog post for some close-up pictures toward the end of the post. rvlove.com/2018/04/12/our-towing-set-up-part-2-braking-and-setting-up-jeep-tow/ Hopefully I can explain a bit more here. We only needed one set of base plates. Those are permanently installed to the frame while the front body panels are removed. The receiver of those baseplates is what the normal tow bar brackets slide into and lock in place for towing. We got an extra set of those brackets that slide in but cut off the part that the tow bar would attach to. This left just the part that slides into the receiver of the base plate. We then welded the red hooks onto the end of that piece to make them functional. Hope that helps. Great tow vehicle. We love our Trailhawk.

I would have probably still done with the same system for our particular vehicle, but you have a different Jeep. Air driven systems can be fully proportional and are very nice systems. They are a bit more lengthy install into both vehicles. but have known many people who consider that braking system to be the best, and believe you would be happy with it too.

Yes, trailers can tow any vehicle, but as you mentioned, can cause their own challenges with limited space at most campsites, and finding a place to put it. Trailers are also nice for maneuverability because you can use reverse (unlike dolly or flat tow).

It gets me out of the house for a while. I've been a rambler ever since I was 14. But it's not as much fun being on the road without her after 40 years of being together. But she tells me to hit the road because when the rambling fever kicks in I get real miserable... then a few week on the road settles it down... LOL... Great video thanks for sharing it... Be blessed. BBE..

I think that's the way I'm going to do it as well. Then you don't have people messing with your vehicle if you are away.

After completing the 19 step procedure for putting jeep in neutral , how does the EPS stay active if last step is to turn off ignition. Does your steering wheel now become easy to turn, such as when it's normally powered up. I've tried to turn my wheel after procedure and it is very hard to turn. My concern is how will wheels track when towed? Mine is 2019 Cherokee.
@Rvlove
@Rvlove 5 лет назад
On our 2015 Jeep, we installed an aftermarket system (from Mopar) that keeps the EPS active when ignition is off. Some 2019 Jeeps can be ordered with the system already on it from what I hear. Ours cost about $500 and it involves a couple extra steps and inserting a fuse under the hood. We talk about it a bit more in our related blog post rvlove.com/2018/04/12/our-towing-set-up-part-2-braking-and-setting-up-jeep-tow/

Did you have to have Jeep install the special wiring harness in the Trailhawk to stop the wobble while flat towing

Yes we did. Here is al ink to the related blog post that goes into far more detail. rvlove.com/2018/04/12/our-towing-set-up-part-2-braking-and-setting-up-jeep-tow/

Hi great vlog The bulk of the work to set up seems to be on the car Did you have the installation done at a Jeep dealer or an RV dealer? And did you buy the parts yourself or through the installer?
@Rvlove
@Rvlove 4 года назад
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it. Yes, with this particular installation, nearly all of the work is setting up the car. Other braking systems sometimes involve the RV more. We actually did the bulk of this install at the manufacturer of the towing equipment, but there are approved RV dealers across the country that could do it. One part of the process can only be done at a Jeep dealer. More details in the related blog posts at rvlove.com/start-here/rv-setup-vehicles/towing/ -M

So I have a stacker trailer behind my coach, do I need to put a braking system on my Rangler, trike, and razor when traveling with them in my stacker trailer? Keep the rubber on the road.
@Rvlove
@Rvlove 6 лет назад
Hi Brian. Wow. That is a serious set up. No, the trailer brakes do the work. No need for separate braking on the items inside unless you ever tow the wrangler separately from the trailer.

RVLove | Marc & Julie Bennett But how will they come to a stop in the trailer when I stop, won't they just keep going?

We just got a 2021 Cherokee Trailhawk do the new ones still need the steering switch installed ??

To our knowledge, the 2021 Cherokee Trailhawk does not need this upgrade. We have other friends with 2021s and tow great without it. -M

Can you tell me where you bought the removable arms that you welded the red tow hooks to? I have a 2019 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk and really miss the red tow hooks. Thank you.

We share much more detail on this in the related blog post at rvlove.com/2018/04/12/our-towing-set-up-part-2-braking-and-setting-up-jeep-tow/ But.. short answer just got an extra set of brackets from Roadmaster, cut off the end, and welded the hooks in their place. -M

Did I hear right, 17 steps to get ready to tow 4 down? Yikes. I am not going to complain about my '16 Ford Focus for sure.
@Rvlove
@Rvlove 6 лет назад
Yep, it is actually even more steps than that if you include the wiring harness. But, it isn't as bad as it sounds. Once you have done it a few dozen times it gets easier to remember.

Where is the link to the specific blog post you mentioned for more details? Did you write out the steps by any chance? We have a 2016 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk. We just bought the Mopar wiring harness that will be installed next week and we're trying to get the braking system installed with the tow bar/plates all before our trip on August 17th lol...lord help us!

17 manufacturer steps, but as stated, they are not that bad. The upside is no limits on speed or how long you can flat tow. This is the same for all newer Jeeps with the 2 speed transfer case. It's also why you see so many Jeep toads on the road.

Thanks for the feedback Lisa. Not much of the braking system we could show on this one that would be relevant to folks. Just a couple wires under the hood.

why not just use a tow trailer ?
@Rvlove
@Rvlove 6 лет назад
Hello Bob. Trailers take up a lot of room at campsites, but are still a great fit for some. You can read more about towing options in this article on our blog website. rvlove.com/2015/08/11/faq-pros-cons-tow-dolly-4-down/

Much much easier to deal with.
@jonn.5475
@jonn.5475 5 лет назад
Another reason is that the weight of the trailer plus the weight of the vehicle may push it over the RV towing limit or the GCWR.
