Be carful with that radiator! A replacement can get pricey. A good radiator shop can clean and fix it if it is not to bad. I am jealous, you found my dream....... But still happy for you. The make great family projects for a growing family. I was born in 67 yet I remember clearly the day my dad and I when to pick up a 1940 Plymouth barn find. Our family grew up with it and even after his passing, we still have it.

Don't try to reuse the head gaskets, the head studs or nuts. Buy new ones. The top of the engine looks like the cylinders and pistons are in great shape (the .080 on the top of the piston means it's .080" overbored - very common. If you have any technical questions, shoot me an email. Happy to help. I did the same thing you're doing in 1968 when I got my first Model A!

The rod and main bearings are not inserts like modern cars. They were made from a material called babbitt, molten tin, copper and antimony. They're poured into the rod and main caps and then machined to fit the crankshaft. Getting hard to find people that can do that anymore.

I give you guys a lot of credit, you dove in undaunted. Make sure you flush that engine out well...as in run water through until it's so clean you'd be willing to drink it. I'd probably drain the oil and drop the pan, might be pretty gunked up. While the head is off try drizzling some atf around those cylinders, it'll help loosen any stuck rings. Good luck guys, do your homework on this one!

@pappabob29
@pappabob29 Год назад
This car is pretty AMAZING!!! Like you said in the video, most times guys need to make or buy special tools to remove the distributor and the head. Yours came right off. The inside of that motor looks great. The .080 markings on the pistons tells you the motor was rebuilt at some point. Based on the way it's coming apart, likely not too long before it was put up in storage. The inside of the motor, with hardly any carbon on the pistons or valves also would suggest not much mileage on that motor. Yes, flush out the radiator and the water jackets. I did one recently and used white vinegar in the water jackets for a few days. Make yourself some "block off" plates to cover the water pump/filler neck, and side water outlets so you can fill the entire block. flush it good with water and baking soda after to neutralize the acid in the vinegar. Your radiator looks pristine also. Looks like you have a very nice "old style" core that is in EXCELLENT shape. Hopefully it will flush out. If not, a "radiator" shop can remove the top and bottom tank and "rod" it out for you. I'm betting the bearings on this motor are going to be in good shape. I just did one of these motors from a truckload of parts my brother brought home from a swap meet 58 years ago. Check out this playlist on my Y.T. channel. I think you will enjoy it. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BlrznaOhASw.html

Just found this channel and I’ve gotta tell you, do NOT destroy this car. Don’t turn it into something it’s not. Restore this car. @rockiecollins4412
@rockiecollins4412 2 года назад
The motor looks good from the top. Hopefully the bearings are alright. You might as well put some new tires and tubes on it and drive it. Great parade car. The only thing you would use if you made a street rod would be the body. That would cost you a lot of money for a new frame, running gear, paint and upholstery.The car is probably worth 5 to 10k the way it sits Get it running and have fun with it.

I doubt that the original owner had a "bird" on the radiator. They were an expensive accessory.
@mafcawebmaster4237
@mafcawebmaster4237 2 года назад
@@nboldrini Actually, they weren't that expensive. The quail radiator cap/mascot debuted in 1929 and the retail cost to the customer was $3. An original today, in good condition, is 100 times that amount. Reproductions are about $100. I have a reproduction (with optional thermometer) on my 1931 De Luxe Tudor Sedan
@nboldrini
@nboldrini 2 года назад
@@mafcawebmaster4237 The value of $3 in 1929 was nearly $50 in today's dollars. Someone who crudely welds the spokes on their wheels would probably pass up a 50 dollar accessory for the radiator.
@mafcawebmaster4237
@mafcawebmaster4237 2 года назад
