I hope you guys know that you always tighten head bolts in the proper sequence starting in the middle and crossing from side to side. It's usually not a good idea to reuse the old head bolts because they stretch out of spec over the many hours of heating and cooling of the engine. Always and I mean always use a torque wrench and it's best to torque down each bolt using a third of your target amount, then two thirds, and finally your target amount. These old engines of that era were seldom very high compression so head gaskets could be used over a time or two as long as they weren't eaten away from corrosion. Wish you the best and I am glad to see you use the old engine and not replace it with a modern one. I'm a purist when it comes to originality.

Model A Fords are positive ground. The rotor on the distributor is adjustible so you can time the spark. There is a bolt on the timing cover that has a point facing out, when you remove this bolt and stick the point side inand rotate the engine until the point goes in a little further will be where # 1 cylinder is top center then adjust your rotor to match #1 wire. Should be very close, at that point you can adjust timing advance with the linkage on steering column.

That old flat head 4 is in really good shape. If you're restoring the car use that motor. If you're making a rod, then stick in a small block V-8 Chevy and 4 speed transmission. Cheers from eastern TN

There used to be a yellow cover hardback book , I believe by Dan Post , for the Ford Model A service bulletins. Find a copy of that and it will explain all technical aspects, repairs, etc that will be needed to do your car correctly. Best of luck

All of the keyboard/internet mechanics on here are hilarious. When it is your car do it the way you want but this one is theirs. For instance I took my original 28 and dropped it on a custom frame and then ran an LS6 with an automatic transmission so let that twist your panties for a bit. Good job guys. Keep making videos.

there is a bolt head on the timing cover that has a rounded part on it(different from the other bolt heads on the timing cover)if you take it out and put it back in its hole (rounded part first) and hold it in with your finger ; then slowly turn the crank- you will feel a "bump" as goes around ; right where the bump is felt is top dead center on piston #1...that is how you can get your timing and position for the dist. rotor ,etc(you might have noticed that there is no timing marks on the crank pulley)...good luck! .....Rainman

It's not too late for you to remove and replace all the old head studs and nuts. That way, you'll get accurate torque readings (about 55 foot/pounds). And you won't risk messing up the new head gasket.

the cable from the negative post of the battery to the starter switch should be a 6-volt cable. Looks like your "loaner" is a 12-volt. Get the right cable from your auto parts store. Also, looks like your start switch (which is an early 1928 square model), may be faulty; you may need a replacement (which won't look exactly like the original but will work fine.

That car may have been hid away and left there because of having possibly being the get-away car in a bank robbery. That might also explain the hole in the rear left trunk area. That lean-to shed was built to hide it. The seats were possibly striped of all absorbent materials to eliminate the blood of the robber who was probably shot in the left back side area, and through the trunk.

Nice to see enthusiasm - but you should adhere to some basic principles of auto-engineering... one of the most obvious being the use of a torque wrench, and tightening nuts in the proper sequence. Quite a few other indiscretions that make me wince a bit, but perhaps considering that this project is for your personal satisfaction, careful attention to detail probably does not matter. My view on this lovely old clanger is to try to keep it as original as possible, and not go too far on restoration. Part of the appeal of many barn finds is the "patina of age", and some collectors PREFER these gems to be relatively un-touched - and will pay good money for a classic like this, largely left in the condition in which you found it.

You seem like really nice guys, but you are way over your head. Like they say the engine is so simple it is impossible to destroy unless you use the wrong bolt tightening pattern, or the wrong grease, or the wrong wires, or the wrong gaps, or the wrong...Are you putting on an act, do you really know cars? Sometimes you can't tell. Do you realize the car is money!!!!! You could start a college fund or at least trade with a car collector for a different runner. This is museum-worthy. The rims you took off are an example. The S you put on are horrible. The seats you plan to use are ticky-tacky. Every video makes me more desperate to want to parachute in and rescue this tortured car from its kidnappers. The pick-up next to the car was a great find too. Did you check the other garages for the remaining original parts? The top and any interior or engine parts? Always a necessity when you find a car like this. Also, the shed roof you left was extremely dangerous. Did you support it or take it down for the lady? If not you left a hazard on the site she is unaware of. AAurgh!! I can't take it anymore.
