If this economy continues crumbling, wonder how much more scrap will be out there to grab. Noticing far less scrap at the road in my neighborhood.

Im thinking of changing yards. I've only been scrapping a couple months, and all of the things you mention at the end happen at this yard. No receipts, cash payments, and no license requests. Last trip, I dropped two cast aluminum pieces in the "house" and proceeded to the scale. Came back, and he said the cast was 5 bucks. Sounded about right, but I never saw the weight. There is a bigger yard only about 10 minutes further I think I'm gonna try. I deal with some anxiety, so I'm always hesitant to start somewhere new, but I don't feel like I'm getting the full value the more educated I get. Thanks for the tips!

Not being able to see the weight is the biggest red flag of all, us hobby scrappers know the weight of what we take to yards exactly.

First thing is if you should be doing is letting the employees unload your vehicle with non-Ferris items and you watch the scale

@@zbigniewczaykowski514 I have a scale now, so I will be more schooled when hitting the yard

@warddbud yea, this place changes often. Sometimes you have to unload, and sometimes they unload it.

Fortunately I have a few different choices of scrap yards, but I only have one that is actually honest. Then my other honest scrapyard is 100 miles away

Things are getting confusing for me. The yard I go to used to post their prices on a dry erase board in the lobby. A few weeks ago they erased everything and said someone was taking pictures and sending it to the competition.....no more prices. Then I started noticing price changes (down of course) I didn't think much of it until the other day when I asked about #2 insulated and they told me it dropped to 0.80 from 0.90 where it's been all summer. When copper is above $4....... Now, there's another scrapyard literally right next door. I called them and they're paying 0.67/lb! I was shocked I then called another yard that's 10-15 miles away and they're paying $1.00 I can't believe the huge swings (percentage wise) between these 3 yards. This is in the metro detroit area. There's a yard up in the middle of nowhere out in the Stix paying $40/ton more for shred than all the yards near me. Comparable prices for other metals. It's all got me scratching my head

Tom I have an extremely odd situation regarding aluminum commodities at one of the three yards in my town. The practice I've been experiencing makes me think something is going on beyond changing prices they pay me. Is there an email address I can reach you if one of your employees to explain this matter? It's a LOT to explain on a RU-vid comment.

Thank you Tom for all the info👍👍👍 My local yard pays out only with check or a pre paid card, no cash at all for anything!!! For all the copper and such they do use large rubber maid rolling tubs and it all seems to be legit on the scales. My last load I took in was all scrap aluminum, prices are down on it unfortunately hope it goes back up, it was labeled secondary at 53 cents a lb, copper and brass is still at a decent price 😁 Thanks again and happy scrapping 😎😎😎

Got one yard that pays cash we without ID for ubcs and ONLY ubcs. However, my state changed a law so yards can pay cash for steel again plus a small number of common non-ferrous (no copper though). I think these policies can vary slightly from state to state, and even yard to yard. For example if you go to a yard run by a company that operates nationwide, they might have a company wide rule that isn't against your state regulations, but they use at all their yards across the country for consistency
