VASAviation - Does anyone know exactly what TOI1 signifies? Obviously, it is the aircraft that Rich took for a joyride, but who knows what the acronym means?
American Paisa How is that even remotely the same thing? The only similarity is that both pull some Gs. An "advantage" you list, returning home in one piece, is not applicable, since the clear intent was to NOT return home in one piece, and as for the legality of it, sure there is something to be said for not endangering lives with reckless flying, but if you are suggesting he should give a fuck about protecting the assets of a multi billion dollar company, I'm going to have to take issue with that.
American Paisa Probably, but then, I don't own a 10 billion dollar company. Why do you care so much about the livelihood of Alaska Air Group anyway? I assume it's not personal, rather it's some misplaced desire for parity or justice, but maybe you need to be reminded of the fact that the very same company employs thousands of wage slaves. If one of those wage slaves, in turn, steals a 30 million dollar company asset, and crashes it into a wooded island, who am I to say that isn't justice.
American Paisa did you even watch part 1 & 2 where they talk to the dude? He had severe depressions, he actually sounded like a super sweet guy and he didn't want to harm anyone, he just wanted to end it all... I'm pretty sure the plane is insured anyway, and the guy died doing what he loved. Just let him rest in peace, he could've done way worse things, there is no need to put him as sth super evil
He actually planned on dying during his barrell roll. Check the audio in the 2nd clip. He says that he didn't know what to do after the manuevre, because he thought that'd be it.
@one world meh... I appreciate him for not crashing the plane right back into the terminal. I’m not in the business of putting hate on suicidal and deceased people.
Terry Melvin. Do you think someone with no flight experience can pull off a maneuver like this? Seems pretty unlikely to me. Especially coming that close to the water. Knowing what altitude to start the roll at. Any thoughts?
Definitely, the guy is scrambled to intercept a Dash-8, he may have expected hijacking.. threats etc, instead he got a sad guy in a stolen air bus doing maneuvers that air bus shouldn't be doing under an experienced pilot, I wouldn't believe it either. Not to mention he was "10 feet" off the water at the bottom of his roll, in the footage you see that it would have been tense.
@jason9022 They didnt though and elected not to. It entirely up to the pilots discretion in this instance. They let him burn though his fuel and were trying to get him to land on any runway.
You conspiracy guys are morons if you think that was skilled flying. He fell out of the barrel roll because he was flying uncoordinated and caused the plane to slip into a dive. He tried to do a roll with just the ailerons and didnt do any corrective action with the elevator when inverted causing the plane to naturally want to slide into a dive. The fact he recovered so low is extreme luck and not a measure of skill. A plane is incredibly easy to fly once airborne. There are youtube videos explaining the entire start up procedure of a dash 8. So yes a no nothing could easily fly the plan around
It seems at moments both pilots were doing their best to remain composed and professional. I would love to hear what they said to each other over intra-flight comms but it's encrypted so we'll never know. I know they must always observe military comm's procedures so I took the liberty of translating a few into what they really wanted to say. "Bigfoot, ROCK41, TOI1 just completed a barrel roll...current altitude 2000 feet" Translation: "Bro! You're never going to fucking believe what this guy just did! Somehow, he pulled off a barrel roll in a commercial turboprop aircraft!" "ROCK42, confirm he did a barrel roll?" Translation: "BULLSHIT!!!" "Affirm, he cleared the surface of the water by approximately 10 feet." Translation: "I'm dead fucking serious. He almost killed himself but the dumb ass pulled it off. Unbelievable!"
but ultimately the true events and more rational story than the one the officials gave us... are after the pilot not obeying their instructions they gunned him down when he was away from the mainland. this is post 9/11 and they do not mess around.
Worry? hes clearly chuckling and quite impressed..... The guy cleared the water by 10 feet doing a barrel roll after just being radioed that he had no experience... I can assure you they were giving him virtual hi 5's
I love that the fighter pilot almost couldn't contain himself when he said he cleared the water by about 10 feet, must have been thinking he was dreaming or something!
As a man who's stepped right up to the suicide line before, this whole ordeal breaks my heart. It seems pretty clear to me that Rich was a good man, who never wanted to hurt anyone, who'd been drug down to the end of his rope, and finally broke. He just wanted to see some pretty sights and do something he'd probably always dreamed of doing before he "went out with a bang". I will never, ever condone suicide, and believe it to be a very selfish thing to do, as all youre doing is bringing pain to those who love you, and giving up before your life has had a chance to get better... Who knows, something amazing could've been in his near future had he not chosen to take his own life. I do, however, understand how it feels to get to the point that your broken mind actually considers such a thing. He did some amazing stuff with that airplane. I only wish, for his sake and his family and friends' sakes, that he'd brought her back afterwards and gotten the help he deserved. Thanks, VASAviation, for a fantastic job, as always.
Rex Commander Yeah. Definitely would've put the cap on an awesome bottle of flying by a non-pilot, and made for a much happier ending. Sure, he'd have been in some pretty big trouble, but, ultimately, it could have led to his life being completely turned around.
Think it's selfish? I think it's selfish that you'd want someone who is going thru for hell to stick around just for your feelings to be spared. Some of us don't have this love you speak of. Some of us hurt all damn day. Some of is just want to rest. I'm so fkn jealous of him. And I'm also in admiration that he had the balls to do it. I can't get passed the trigger. I hate being a pussy about it. Everytime I try I always start to think . I'm terrified of people finding me like that and don't want to scare someone else's psyche. I don't want my roommate finding me like that. And people just judging and passing their opinions without truly knowing your story or what u went thru ...but then again ...TF do I care for. Ugh. I need to get a intoxicated as possible and channel my inner "BEEBO" (that's what his nickname was) and do the deed
The Mighty Sagetto Bro, I understand what you're saying. I've been there, man. So I get it. I've also had loved ones who chose that route, and I've seen the damage it does to thier loved ones, to my own self. You just said yourself that you didn't want your roommate to find you that way, didn't want them to have to have that on them. And not pulling the trigger doesn't make you a wimp. Quite the opposite. It makes you strong. It means you're willing to keep pushing through in order to keep from hurting others. I'm sorry that you're hurting. Truly. Been there. Still deal with it sometimes. But I also know this: it won't stay that way. Things change. You could wake up tomorrow and find your whole life turned around. I don't know what you're dealing with specifically, man, so I won't speak to that, out of respect for you. I do know that there's help, and hope, for you, and for me, and for everyone, even if we can't see it right now. I hope the best for you, man.
For someone without any formal flight training (or if he had any, certainly not enough), for Rich to perform a barrel roll is impressive. Even the F-15 pilots seemed to be impressed by the feat. Too bad he didn't make it, he was someone who was just down on his luck. RIP Rich.
@@savedemperor8024 Because this event could have easily wound up with a collision with another plane full of people murdering everyone on board. Guess how many people are on board your average passenger plane.
It must have been hard maintaining the professionalism after seeing a commercial airliner do the most impressive stunt since the Boing 707 did a Corkscrew.
And lost control 20 seconds later and crashed onto a populated island. And destroyed someone else's million dollar aircraft. And clean up workers had to scrape his guts off of trees. Yeah, magnificent.
@@robertmoore3982 Have you stolen any million dollar items from your workplace because you don't think they were "loving" enough for your messed up life? And endangered thousands of people? I suspect possibly you have. You're very special.
@@Bill_Woo that's why my company has insurance for events like these. The man did what he did and no one got hurt. Let the dead man have his peace you twisted fuck
@@robertmoore3982 So, you think it is okay to destroy things, because, the insurance company pays for those things. Stolen things, to boot. You're a scary citizen. And that kind of attitude will backfire in ways that you can't imagine. Think criminal court. Think civil court. And think about Sky King, who some public service worker had to scrape his guts out of the trees. Do you glorify that, and think that you'd be just fine with it? And that your heirs would be fine with your big life insurance policy? (Oh, by the way, they don't pay for death in commission of a felony -- or fraud, for that matter. Just in case you were getting a boner about it.) What kind of parents did you have to have such a psychotic societal attitude?
kingg213. Care to elaborate? He did in fact "pull it off" although it wasn't his intention. In the other video (part 2, I believe), he tells ATC he thought he would crash doing it and "thought that would be it" however, he luckily (not skillfully) managed not to crash during that particular maneuver.
Thank you so much for putting together these videos which really add a lot of insight to this event. Kudos on all your hard work, keep it up, we all really appreciate it :)
I get really down at times, and I know it's not right to leave my kids. Sometimes their faces isn't enough to keep the thoughts at bay. I've been watching a lot of videos about this and I can't help but think 'that way' while I'm watching, but hearing the ATC that were really trying to get him to land, I've got to live.
Thanks! This 3-part series is a great compilation, like no other, especially since there were so many frequencies / ATC entities involved in this incident! Great Job!!
"He cleared the surface of the water by approximately 10 feet." Holy shit....... :( Although, Rich was not looking to come back from this flight I guess..... I have listened to the audio of Rich with ATC several times now. Very sad. :( I wish we could catch and help people like this - before they do things like this.
When this happened my boss burst into HR one morning and reenacted this chase by spreading his arms and portraying the planes by running around the room while telling the story via a raised voice as he did so. It made my day.
Feeling bad for the family of Rich and for the two Airforce Pilots in the F15's, it can't be good for your psychical health, if you see a guy suiciding right in front of you, I hope they're mostly ok and, if they needed help, got it.
The fighter pilots seem genuinely shocked and in awe that a non qualified person could do those manoeuvres, I imagine they had serious respect for richard
Poor Rich. He did not want to hurt anyone. He just wanted to see the pretty sights and then go out. And he got his wish. Mental issues suck. i am just glad, he was such a gentle being, he did not feel the urge to hurt or take anyone with him.
As you probably know, people living with mental health issues are far more often victims of violence than perpetrators, except toward themselves. So sad.
What should all in all be a totally serious incident, it's hard to take it all seriously when barrel rolls are involved and even fighter pilots are impressed.
Get home after a long day. Take my son out for some evening fishing on a small boat. No idea anyone stole a plane. These two guy fly by so fast you didn’t even hear them approach...sonic boom 💥 followed by another sonic boom .blew my fucking hat off my head . Like something out of a movie. I thought MT Rainier exploded. Needless to say my son thought it was the coolest thing ever. Feel a little bad for the guy who stole the plane. I feel like we’ve all been there at some time in our lives.
This is really an incredibly sad event. And it proves two things. One is that some people will do anything to ease the pain and the other is mental illness can truly be a silent disease.
One of the saddest things about this... He had no experience and was piloting a plane that wasn't really meant to do barrel rolls; he still pulled it off. In another lifetime, I bet he would have been a great pilot, doing airshows and having the time of his life. And I bet the F-15 and that other pilot realized that too when he pulled the trick off. Instead, life dealt him a crappy hand and it resulted in this.
Planes also aren't designed to slice through skyscrapers. Do you also celebrate that action? 1. Life didn't deal him a crappy hand. He died a criminal, destroying millions of dollars of property. 2. He broke a seriously inflexible law that says you don't operate any vehicle without training and licensing. Military jets pointed missiles at him for that solemn infraction. 3. By sheer luck he missed occupied homes on the island he crashed onto. *He didn't "pull it off"* - he lost control right after the roll, and crashed onto a populated island. This is why you have to have licenses to operate cars, and solemnly seriously, aircraft.
I pray that you don't teach your children that when life deals them a crappy hand that they should steal multi million dollar property; destroy it; make a bloody mess that some public service worker has to collect the guts off of trees and bag them; cause millions of dollars of damage just alone to the closing of airspace and diversions, and millions of dollars in investigations and clean up. If you teach your children that when life deals them a crappy hand that they should take actions that EASILY could have killed mothers and families because he was untrained in his lawbreaking adventure - you will be seeding the earth with mass murderers. So do you still want to celebrate this? Is that the lesson you impart to your children?
@@Bill_Woo he didnt "lose control" the plane was stolen with the specific intent of the pilot killing himself. Theres recordings from flight control of him saying he doesn't want to hurt anyone, the pilot literally says hes gonna try a barrel roll and if It goes well hes gonna go nose down and call it a night. The island was so sparsely populated the likelihood of him hitting someone was next to 0. You take me is the kind of person who says "depression isn't real, just get a hobby". The man was suicidal and wanted a but of fun and to fly before he took his life. Admittedly stealing a plane is wrong and illegal, but fucking hell you're Comparing a mans suicide attempt to 9/11 and its both sad and disingenuous. And why make your comment so personal? You seem like quite a prick tbh.
@@Bill_Woo listen genius, this was a suicide attempt. There are plenty of uploads on this site of said barrel roll and he recovers it fine. I never said what he did was ok, did I you "angry little man". All I said was you're being a prick. Treat others with respect or we might be reading about you getting stabbed because you gobbed off on some guy on the streets. There is nothing psychopathic about showing some sympathy with someone who was clearly mentally Ill and not getting the help they needed. I'm in no need of psychiatric help, if anything you are with your sperg'n out and anger issues on the internet because you're seriously taking the moral high ground over someone who took their own life.
Wow, completed a roll in a Dash-8 from 5000’ (maybe less?) first try, with not a single hour in the hotseat. God himself was caressing that plane’s wings - not just wind.
ahhh geez this is new news to me .. how very sad 😥 RIP Richard (Rich) Russell Absolute kudos to all the professionals .. man! talk about calm cool and collected 👏👏
Such a sad tragedy. Clearly he had some depression. I dont think he ever planned to land. I feel for his loved ones that had to pick up and try to move forward. I hope he was dizzy and passed out before impact, just no suffering. He could have taken out thousands of people but seemed to avoid most populated areas. Hope he found peace
So sad that he got to that point mental-health wise and felt like he had no reason to live. I’d like to think that anyone listening to him would understand that there were mental health issues here.
2:53 should read "ROCK41 Tally TOI1", where "tally" is brevity for "visual on the target" and "toi" stands for "target of interest". The 1 just means it's the number 1 target. In this case there's only one target anyway, but you get the point.
I'm ok with him stating fuel remaining that way. Far more accurate than pounds in that context. If there was a la ding instead then pounds of fuel would be relevant to ground safety but in the air, minutes of fuel makes more sense.
You know they must have taken footage of #Skyking crashing from those F-15's . They stayed right with him. I wonder if it'll be released after the investigation?
Supes Me Not sure the F15C has a stabilized optical video system as part of its basic design. I dont see a pod or faring for such looking at the aircraft. The F14 did have a system like that, have a look under the nose, aft of the Radome on the F14, that bulged faring with the clear dome on the front of it was a long range video system.
E M They can mount targeting pods, but those are designed and used primarily for air to ground. They have a camera that records the view through the HUD, but that wouldn't be very useful in this case.
I don't think they would mention that. Rich was clearly dealing with mental issues and was suicidal so telling him that he is being intercepted by two F15s could have made him panic and worsen the situation. They never gave up to persuade him into landing the plane till the very end.
The woman at 0:50 has the perfect ATC voice. Quick and clear and sounds good Even the fighter pilots were laughing when they described the barrel rule. If only he had landed. This guy's a legend.
Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. I feel awful for the poor guy, and wish someone could’ve helped him because from other audios he sounded like a great guy. I admire his big balls, and will always think of him when I see jerry garcia on the tail of an airplane. Rest in peace captain 👩✈️🛫
For all those keyboard pilots who think doing something like this is easy the reality is it's not doing an intercept is one of the hardest things you have to do not just because of the skill needed but because of the emotional toll it also takes later if you have to pull the trigger I think as Pilots they were impressed with the barrel roll but at the same time they were also saddened by the situation they could hear the stress in Rich's voice and remember we were on the ground and in the air this story takes on a whole new dynamic just remember that
This. Their duty was to protect the public and if it appeared he was going to risk life on the ground, their orders are to take him down with minimal risk to innocents.
But an intercept isn't hard when ATC is giving you vectors. Shooting a civilian plane down though ya I'm sure they were relieved that it didn't come to that.
Being a non-pilot with less experience in simulators (games) than the renegade pilot in these videos, I think any plane can do a barrel roll because during test flights, they did a barrel roll in the (then) new Boeing 707. Of course, you would have to be an experienced/expert pilot to pull it off because of keeping the whole thing stable and not lose too much altitude. Isn't a proper barrel roll one where you maintain more or less the same altitude? So yeah, the pilot clearly tried to make it his final act because he had zero experience flying in the real world but somehow he made it. Last thing he mentioned was one of the engines acting up so he probably ran out of fuel and that caused his crash.
Fundamental rule of aviation comms: If you have a question, no matter how "dumb" it might sound, ask. For all she knew, the pilot might refer to ground level just as "ground", thus asking for details.
She had to ask - just think of the resources she and commanders have to coordinate if it were some ground/some water v. all water v. all ground, etc. Obviously this is going to be a unified command for response and recovery efforts. Sometimes it helps to back-up and think of the bigger picture here
So I work @ a regional airline in Alaska. A mechanic I know, knows of him from Wasilla, the chance of him have any kind of plane experience is highly likely in the valley, let alone anchorage area. Seems like a ton of young kids at least will have their privates license, I believe 5O hours is only needed to require it.
Asian rapper i believe we would already know if he had a licence, is probably the first thing they would check. He didn't had much experience if any. And flying a bombardier is nothing like a little cessna anyways, on a basic level maybe but we are talking multi engine turbo prop vs piston fixed prop. Cheers man!
Well, i'd say to never choose a permanent solution to probably a temporary problem. Still, i hope this won't inspire anyone else to do something similar.
I'm just glad he was a good guy who didn't want to kill as many people as he could. He could have really racked up a massive death toll with that dash 8 if he wanted to go out that way.
I wish I can sit there next to Rich and help him land safely even he got cough by police better be good and in old age maybe someone for who that listen to Rich would make him a better person. This always happen when people doesn't have good support poor Rich RIP. man #speechless #sad
