There's an even better way. Sit down with your child and listen to the music. Ask them what they thought of it at the end, what it makes them feel, and if there's anything in it that makes them uncomfortable. But Grod fucking forbid that parents actually connect with their kids in any meaningful way for an hour a week.
Ikr. If they don't have the time to go through their kid's music, then they don't have time to have children at all. It's lazy as fuck to think it's unreasonable to put in the time to protect their children.
He had an excellent point with his statement that a truly concerned parent would listen to an album to deem it appropriate for their child. Gore was reeling after that one...
@@ifilmalways7122 And the Sniders are still together and have 4 kids who are all successful in their chosen careers, and has a gaggle of grandchildren. Gore and Miss No-Longer-Gore have lost. They're the old guard who are losing the fight of life to the man in cut-off jeans, makeup, and a massive perm. Grod but I hope it burns them up inside.
"Have you ever had surgery with your hands tied, and your legs strapped?" Well, I had gallbladder surgery last november, and I had to be strapped to the table, both legs and hands. That way, I wouldn't fall when the surgery table was raised to a standing position, and the doctors could operate that way.
I had gallbladder surgery too and even though my hands were not tied my legs were and the surgeon did the operation standing between my legs. Out of context that could have been seen as SM and/or sexual. Depends totally from the point of view. XD
I had two ruptured brain aneurysms. Let me tell you. In the prep room, when they strapped my arms down. Dee snider is a really smart guy. I had to come to terms with my mortality at 29 years old as they were strapping my arms down, i shed a tear one of the nurses took her gloves off and held my hand while i fell asleep. Nobody behind that high and mighty bench has probably ever been in that situation. It IS scary and you feel alone and helpless. Ill remember my nurses empathy for the rest of my life.
Makes you wonder what his kid thought of it. "Dad, do you love me enough to spend an hour a month doing something you don't like?" "Watch the video again."
He is BEIGE in every sense of the word. He's mayonnaise when you really want some sriracha. He's a flavorless piece of gum sitting under the seat of a park bench. No wonder his wife is interested in BDSM-it's a heck of a lot more fun than he is.
"It is totally unreasonable in my view to expect parents to come and sit down and listen to every single song in the albums that their children buy in order to fulfill their responsabilties as parents" Al Gore Um, that IS the parents responsability Al.:)
And that my friends is why Dee Snider is one of the most beloved men in rockin roll, not because he wrote two hits, and one hit record and a bunch of ok pre glam/metal songs, but because he is such a brilliant man, he single handedly saved the first amendment right for artists of all genres in a time when a liberal congress tried to take those rights.
This attack on this intelligent musician is interesting to see. I'm a big time metal listener. It kind of harkens back to the Plato and Aristotle disagreement about art. Plato warned about the social ills that art can encourage, while Aristotle spoke of, say, his catharsis idea, as in art helping with the vomiting up of pent up things from within. I think it's not one way and not the other. It's both together. Anyway, may metal never die. Metal has helped me in my case quite a lot. Ha, I introduced my favorite two nephews to it. They started a metal band. I'm a proud uncle.
Great story- Its good to hear that people still take interest in other forms of music than what's mainstream. Plato also talked about looking past what is "readily apparent" and finding a different interpretation. Not saying that people who don't listen to mainstream are smarter, but they certainly are exposed to views/ideas mainstreamers aren't. Glad I found metal and not Bieber....
One good thing now that was different when we where younger is that you have heavy metal kids listening to 2010+ bands heavy metal dads who listened to 90s and 80s bands , and even heavy metal granddads who listened to 70s bands, so I think kids are growing up now with parents that actually get it and understand why kids like it. My old man was a bit mystified with my music till I played him some iron maiden and he said "Hey this is a bit like sabbath in parts" and then the lights went on and he understood. Now even old grandpa probably wore a black shirt in his day lol.
"Do you think it's reasonable to have the parents sit down and listen to every song on the album? Well if they're really concerned about it, I think that they have to." Well said. Being a parent comes with great responsibility. You can't 'fix' your kids without attempting to. These people expected to see a selfish, uneducated rocker. What they got was a kick to the balls. Dee came prepared and destroyed their backwards-ass allegations.
As an Occupier, I can tell you without a doubt that that is not at all what Occupiers want. Educate yourself, don't believe what you hear from the corporate media.
I'm not a metalhead, I'm a punk rocker, but I love everything dee is saying. he just says it so fluenty and all his responses are instant and well thought out.
He was showing them that he isn't a stupid metal singer and that he has brains by answering they're questions intelligently, polity and he knows what he was talking about.
My parents never censored anything I listened to, and for the most part, they didn't listen to it either. They had a relationship with me, they listened to me, they were exemplary role models to me, and provided a loving environment where I was encouraged to think for myself while also instilling certain values, which could not be unraveled by a song on an album. The stuff I listened to as a teen was very sexist, but I had a great relationship with my mother, thus respect for women.
ROCK N ROLL TEACHES---HARD WORK AND COMPETITIVE SPIRIT. ROCK LISTENERS HAVE BEEN PROVEN TO HAVE A STRONGER PERSONNA WITH BETTER MORAL COMPASSES. GUINNESS WILL PROVE THAT AS WELL.
I have The Full 40 minutes tv airing of Dee Snider PMRC Hearing from 1985 on dvd,it has other 80s Twisted Sister Footages,Plus on another dvd Warning,Parent Guidence movie with Dee Snider about PMRC Hearing.Email for info.
Well said. It's quite sad that parents still look towards music and television in order to find suitable scapegoats, to cover up for their failure to instill strong morals in their children. It's even sadder that there's an entire organization dedicated to this cause ( Yes, PMRC. I went there!) that uses the taxpayers' money to fund their blatant acts of self righteousness.
We are as one as we all are the same Fighting for one cause Leather and metal are our uniforms Protecting what we are Joining together to take on the world With our heavy metal Spreading the message to everyone here Come let yourself go
I love the way that the person testifying is expected to be contrite, but that it's perfectly acceptable for senators, who really should be held to a higher standard, to attack a person's character and insinuate that they're immoral people, and that their religious beliefs are false.
What kills me is that he finds it unsufferable to know what his kids are listening to, or that Gore believes that it is too just too much to ask of a parent.
I would of made reference to old irish songs aka Whiskey in the jar or American Country songs at the time? Did parents teach there kids about freedom or sexism or educational freedom or oppression in the 80s? kids in this country didnt have the same education in the North vs the South vs California in the 80s! Thanks Dee for setting alot of us free to exercise musical freedoms and FREEDOM OF SPEECH!
Screw the government interfering in the creation of ART. Censorship SUCKS. Parents get to decide what content their children should be exposed to - it's their JOB as parents...same as nutrition. I've never lied to my son and rarely kept him from listening/watching/learning on his own (with my guidance and honest opinions expressed) - and check this out! He's 19 now - doesn't drink, doesn't smoke, doesn't do drugs and treats girls/women with the utmost respect. GO FIGURE!
People don't mention much about the "questioning". I personally think he nailed them to the wall. They attacked, and he sent them to the freaking moon.
I do admire Dee Snider for standing up to them and defending not just heavy metal, but art itself. He's a very articulate and passionate person. But at the same time, half the fun in listening to heavy metal, screamo, hard rock, political rap, gangsta rap, etc. is that our parents and older generation don't like it. It's not meant for them, it's meant for us, and it speaks to the younger youth with an understanding of where they come from.
What's unbelievable about all of this is how incredibly innocuous 80s music really was, yet it was far more vilified than the garbage-filled music today.
Dee could have easily pointed the finger back at the senators. They spent the majority of their time in Washington or on the road meeting constituents. Very little home time, reading lyrics or listening to music with their kids.
Listen to "Startin up a Posse" by Anthrax, that song says it all. No government has the right to tell me what I will watch, listen to, etc. The next step after that is to start burning books.
If you can't take 30 minutes to 1 hour of your time to listen to your child's music album, and you need someone else to tell you what your kids should and shouldn't listen to, you are not a responsible parent, your an irresponsible parent, a lazy parent, and it's all by your own choice. And I stand by that.
If you as a parent can't tell what a song is actually about, do you think your kids can? NO! I thought Ice Cream Man by Van Halen was about selling ice cream, and that was when I was THIRTEEN!!! It was so subtle not even my dirty teenage brain could pick it up.
I also like how Dee Snider showed up in t shirt and jeans, hair everywhere, looking fuckin' metal, with such clear and concise answers to all these questions.
Why is it,, they always pick on the music industry (lyrics with Horror, violence sex,,ect) its Dee's job as an entertainer, and that's as far as it goes... PMRC didn't go after directors or writers in the movie or tv industry, who write about violence horror sex,,ect,, Thanks Dee.. Even In Court You Rocked It !
