Part 3 - The World's Best Watchmaker - Watch Collecting 

Awesome! this is the kind of content I am interested in. Instead of "top 5 chronographs under 2k" (no offense to any of the other watch channels).

Interesting point from Roger about his regrets over the Rolex watch he bought as a youngster but never used and enjoyed much because he was afraid to wear it. I wonder whether there are all too many luxury timepiece owners like that? (I myself put a nasty little dink into the second Rolex I bought within little over two months of getting it. As non-cool as that feels, I'm still glad to be wearing the watch and enjoying it, rather than to have wrapped it in cotton wool and kept it locked in the safe!)

This guy is an engineer of the highest calibre.He designs uses his slide rule as it were and machines as a toolmaker.To me a hero . He also talks alot of sense reference to guys collecting g shocks? Also overcomplicating a movement because it becomes less efficient? Not a hint of snobbery on these videos. A guy I would happily have a pint with.Enjoyed all three parts so thanks!.Cheers.Len.

Thanks for a very fascinating video! I really love Mr. Smith‘s attitude toward watches, acknowledging that it’s entirely up to each individual what kind of watch is best. If there’s anybody who has some sort of right to be a watchsnob, it would be Roger Smith. Kind of cool to know he’s anything but.

This was a fantastic series. What an accomplished man Roger is. Considering these accomplishments, his humility and integrity are most admirable. Adrian, you asked excellent qustions. One qustion I had hoped for, however, would have been regarding what kind of oils he uses in his movements. Thank you ever so much for putting these videos together.

Really wonderful series. Great to hear Roger talk about his thought process and what motivates him. And Adrian, great job of putting this together. This is quite high quality stuff, without being stuffy or overproduced. Did you just become an Horological Documentarian?

Excellent video series. Thank you! I found Mr. Smith's collection of other watch brands very interesting. I wasn't surprised at his affinity for Omega, but I was a little surprised that his interest in this brand went beyond the modern co-axial movements. His regard for the 50-60 year-old Omegas was eye opening! I also wasn't too surprised at his regard for the modern Rolex, the other excellent, low maintenance movement aside from Omega(and his own movement). What shocked me is that this man, who may be the premier example of high horology, didn't exhibit an interest in other so-called high horology brands like Lange, Patek, etc.

Superb Adrian. Just read the comment below wishing they could afford one of Rogers watches, I would echo that, but would always feel uncomfortable wearing anything that cost more than twice my house! A lovely guy though and the pieces are superb, long may he continue and prosper.

People forget the heyday of precision engineering was British. Men like this can do a lot do bring back valuable trades. Apprentice programs and so on. What a legend

Adrian, as a regular purveyor of watch videos, I really think that you should extend this idea of interviews to convey watch information. For you personally, I think it’s a good avenue because when you look at other channels that are all too often camera-facing formats with two people talking, the viewer loses the participatory aspect and feels as if they are being talked at rather than observing the passion of the watch enthusiast. Your style, in this Roger Smith trilogy, seems so much more professional and the editing and music are excellent. In a previous video of Roger on his own, he stated that he wanted to ‘make a difference’ and this really provoked some thinking in me about what we do and I believe that this is what you’re doing, in this style, for consumers of watch media. Defour is still #1 for me, but I must say that I really enjoyed this trilogy of videos! Amazing job!

Watched this with my 10 year old daughter, she thought his watches are VERY EXPENSIVE!!! But she loved that Roger was from the Isle of Wight and loved the beauty of the watches that he creates; she is the next generation of watch lover (her Mickey Mouse watch never leaves her wrist!!)

I wonder if he replaced the lever excapement on his EXPLORER with a Co-Axial escapement like Daniels did wiith his Rolex?

I must say, these episodes with Roger Smith have been the fastest 30 odd minutes in my whole entire life. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Excellent interview. I wish it could have been longer so we could get more of an inside view. But like I say, the only thing that irked me was Roger Smith touching the souls of his shoes. That's just not clean.

Roger Smith = no bullshit or watch pretension. He is fabulously honest in a business full of Kardashian vulgarity.

I would like to say that I have enjoyed your three videos on Roger Smith, but I must also say that I think your title as the best watchmaker in the world is not a accurate statement there are many other watchmakers throughout the world that are equal to Roger and in some cased better, I am not trying to put Roger down in any way as what he has achieved is something to be proud of and being the apprentice to G.D, was a wonderful opportunity that a lot of watchmakers would have dreamed of. Anyway keep up the good work with the video making but be more accurate with your titles in the future.

"Best watchmaker in the world". Depends on what parameters you use to define the claim. His concerns seem to be primarily with durability, longevity, serviceability and accuracy. On those he certainly he can't be faulted, or hardly bested. But in terms of complexity of complications and quality of finishing, there are others who might claim the title. Basically it's whether or not you buy into a particular philosophy of watchmaking. That's part of the reason this crazy irrational hobby can bring such immense gratification to so many diverse types.
