Part 36.
I had to remove the rear part of the exhaust in order to get better access to the suspension mounting points and to check the condition of the rear floorpan. The exhaust will need some work and it's a lot easier to work on when it's removed from the car.
It's surprisingly heavy so not ideal if working on the car on your own and you don't want it falling onto anything, i.e you.

I had a lot of issues with the exhaust on my 216GTi, the back box went on it. KwikFit changed the back box, but it sounded terrible afterwards. Took it back in and they agreed to change the middle box under warranty. But that didn't cure it. In the end I took it to a conventional garage and asked them to fit an original equipment exhaust. They rang me up 'Are you sure Mr Morton, there's nothing wrong with the exhaust' "Trust me it sounds terrible on the road" !! They changed it and peace was restored! On most cars I suspect it might not have been an issue, but from memory 70mph corresponded to 4000rpm so it was quite tiresome on longish journeys and I used the car for a long commute each day back then in the 1990's.

Yes - the short final ratio has always my least favourite aspect of running a twincam GTi. I was doing a 76 mile round trip commute in mine before it was SORN'd six years ago. A14 then M11 and it started to get a bit irksome. FDefinitely not a long distance car - although having said that I've toured Dorset and Cornwall in it on twisty B roads and it was fun.
