Take an exclusive look at the NTT IndyCar Series' new hybrid engine technology that's coming in 2024 done in partnership with Chevrolet and Honda in the final chapter of RACER's four-part series.
RACER's IndyCar Trackside Report is presented by ‪@SkipBarberRacing‬. With multiple locations in the US, Skip Barber Racing School has developed more winning racers than any other school. Their alumni have taken the podium in all facets of motorsports including NASCAR, INDYCAR, SCCA, World Challenge and IMSA. In fact, more than 1/3rd of the starting lineup in the 2022 Indy 500 were Skip Barber graduates. Click to learn more: bit.ly/SBRS-TSR8

Truly hoping this is a success. I have put almost 230K miles on a used Honda insight and average 50MPG. My feelings are the cost vs advantage power and weight penalty wise are not there. I see a lot more breakdowns happening but again there will be much learned no doubt. IndyCar is the best racing today and I love both manufacturers. I grew up building small block chevy's with my dad, uncle and cousin. Serious question has powering the front wheels even been discussed? Great interviews enjoy this content.

No talk of powering the front axle. It would require a complete redesign of the car to send power to the front wheels. I'm also not sure of any formula car designed to run the front wheels except maybe Formula E.

On one hand, I'm excited for something....anything....new for IndyCar technology wise. On the other, IndyCar management has been totally inept at seemingly everything other than promoting and running the 500 and IMS. Here's hoping the manufacturers involvement will ensure this project goes well.

It sounds as if Honda and Chevy are leading this program and indycar is staying away. I think this is good for reasons you mentioned that indycar has been so inept in many areas other than running and promoting the 500.

If they feel they have to go down this road then fine but don’t make the same mistakes F1 did by ruining the sound of the engines. Sound is one of the most important parts of the fan experience.

As far as I know push to pass isn't available on ovals. So how would this hybrid solution be used on ovals? Not being an engineer I guess the regeneration would be next to zero as the cars go flat out 99% of the race.
@AceP40

how will regen work on a superspeedway?
@danielhenderson8316
@danielhenderson8316 Год назад
To be determined. I know they've tested at the IMS Road Course, but I'm not sure when the oval test is scheduled.
@u-wot-n8
@u-wot-n8 Год назад
The drivers will have a fiddle brake paddle Where you see drivers lifting to make corners in the dirty air will be an opportunity to run more throttle and drag the fiddle brake to regenerate energy to deploy later
@izzdin6228
@izzdin6228 Год назад
@@u-wot-n8 adds another element of strategy. In the tow if you're saving fuel, just pull the hybrid paddle on the wheel and let the car in front pull you as you recharge your hybrid. Then when the time is right you dump your energy reserves and pass by like nfs nitrous.
@mistrphixit7484
@mistrphixit7484 Год назад
I'm thinking hitting the regen button would reduce the overall power to the wheels. Drivers lose a couple hrspwr to get a couple seconds of 150 in a kind of high risk high reward scenario. You would have to draft behind someone to regen. The strategy comes in where available electric power would have to be managed as you don't know what stagegy other drivers are using.
@stephenjarzombek2903
@stephenjarzombek2903 Год назад
@@mistrphixit7484 You are correct, there's no free lunch in thermodynamics. All the power that ends up in the capacitor comes from burning fuel...it's just that it's not wasted in brake heat. If lifting is enough to slow the car, using the regen paddle instead requires the driver to stay on the throttle enough to burn the extra fuel required to generate that energy. The other issue is that there are heat and frictional losses in any such system--you always get back less energy to the wheels than you harvested into the capacitor. Thus on an oval, any driver on a fuel save strategy will not be able to use the system effectively other than to regenerate power when slowing to pit.

It's hard to Defy Everything when you're fast, loud, and unapologetic. I mean authentic! But seriously, I just hope it's a net positive in the power to weight department.

@danielhenderson8316 Год назад
Right now it's 100 hp for 60 lbs, and the aeroscreen gets lighter and stronger next year as well. It does make me wonder if they'll up the boost on road courses since they won't be overboosting the engine next year.
@izzdin6228
@izzdin6228 Год назад
@@danielhenderson8316 I'm curious about this as well. They're running 700hp on road courses, with p2p upping up to 750hp. Will they be running 750hp from the get go and letting the hybrid up the power to 850hp total? I hope this is the case.
@taylorsmith4758
@taylorsmith4758 Год назад
@danielhenderson8316 I hope that's the case. Unclear if the supercapacitor unit requires a battery, or if it's just a 60 lb increase. Hybrid road car batteries are very heavy

@davidholmer6099
@davidholmer6099 Год назад
Watch all four parts of this series. The energy is stored in a capacitor, not a battery. Fast discharge, fast recharge is the benefit. The capacitor will be recharged by the engine which is powered by non-food chain based ethanol. 100 extra HP makes an 800 HP engine a 900 HP engine without extra strain and wear on the ICE components. It a win all around.
@izzdin6228
@izzdin6228 Год назад
@@davidholmer6099 but will they run the engine at that power from the get go? Because they only run 700hp on the road course setup and p2p adds 50hp. I'm curious whether they run the engines at full 750hp and just supplement 100hp with the capacitor or they just directly replace the 50hp p2p with 100hp hybrid for a net gain of only 50hp?
