Found a huge hidden culvert behind a wall, check out footage of this at 11 minutes 47 seconds & 13 Minutes 40 seconds into the video
Most of the river is culverted through Bolton town centre, running under Knowsley Street; Market Place and Bridge Street.and before 1836 the river formed the boundary between the townships of Great and Little Bolton.
The river’s name is derived from the Old English croh and wella, the winding stream.

Great video.. looks like you started your journey up near Chorley Street and the croal runs at the side of Bark Street the first mill Was St Helina Mill. the first mill in Bolton, now the probation centre and on the right would be the Old Velvet walks old tenement houses as there where many cellar families then in 1840-1850s with up to 12 in 1 room, as you go further down there where many mills on Bark Street and foundaries this then goes under The Victoria Halls Knowsley Street and the other side as per your first pictures down the steps was for deliveries at the Old Market Hall they where blocked up but can be seen under the other side the original market basement facing Argos however this was all covered with the new concrete sections under ground and the New market place built over Lower Bark Street to St Georges Road where the St Georges pub stood, it then goes under the high rise car park as you said at Crown Street and can be seen at the side of the Cromwellian club in Bank Street now being knocked down then on past the Bolton Parish Church and comes out near St Peters way.If you go to Bury Road shopping centre near old Staples shop and look over the side of the car park you will see it again. St Peters Way was a natural culvert and the canal run above.thanks Bob.

Wow you certainly know your history on bolton, thank you really appreciate you comments, I do have 1 question, in my video when I climb up into one the rooms at the side of river I pop my camera through a hole in the wall and see what looks like a well, have you any idea what that is?

@@JonesAdventures1982 Will have a look it's a bit hard on the old brain however on the short video in last tunnel you could go no further would be the walk ways at St Peters way near the old canal, if you type in Church Wharf there was an old pub there and a scrap yard lots of pics on net, down the hill from the Parish Church this was the main road to Bury also blocked by St Peters way. thx Bob.

there was the old corn mill facing the club in Bank Street Street and there was a bad fire next to this, the top story club where someone set the stairs on fire and many people died in the fire in 1961 jumping over 60 ft into the Croal and hitting those cobbles there was no health and safety however the fire service now use this for training. There where many voids and where Argos is in next street the old frontage is from the old Bolton Coop and they had cellars etc. many news stories of the fire and I think you are in this area in Crown Street, the club you mentioned used to be Bolton Dairies in Bank Street in the 50s and 60s and then Asda bought it.thx Bon

When I was a teenager, before it was argos it was derelic. There was a hole in the wall at the other end you entered from, we used to climb up inside and explore the whole building, was massive. There was an old cafe that was shaped and decorated like the inside of a plane, wish I had pics, was way before mobiles.
