Part 1 of our first narrowboat holiday on The Blue Goose on the Kennet and Avon canal in August. We started at Hilperton Marina and went up the canal on the first day, then back down the canal for two days before returning to Hilperton. How many lochs is that?

A holiday on a narrowboat along the Kennet and Avon Canal offers a unique and tranquil experience, allowing you to explore the picturesque countryside and charming villages of southern England at a leisurely pace. The Kennet and Avon Canal stretches for 87 miles, connecting the River Thames at Reading to the River Avon in Bath, passing through stunning landscapes and historic sites along the way.
Here's what you can expect from a narrowboat holiday on the Kennet and Avon Canal:
Scenic Views: The canal winds its way through some of England's most beautiful countryside, offering stunning views of rolling hills, lush greenery, and tranquil waterways. You'll pass by idyllic villages, historic towns, and peaceful rural landscapes, providing ample opportunities for photography and relaxation.
Historic Landmarks: Along the route, you'll encounter several historic landmarks and attractions. Highlights include the Caen Hill Locks near Devizes, a flight of 29 locks that form an impressive staircase; Bradford-on-Avon with its charming architecture and medieval bridge; and the UNESCO World Heritage city of Bath, famous for its Roman baths and Georgian architecture.
Leisurely Pace: Life on a narrowboat is slow-paced and relaxed, allowing you to unwind and enjoy the journey. You'll travel at a gentle speed, typically around 4 miles per hour, giving you plenty of time to soak in the scenery, enjoy picnics on the towpath, or stop off at waterside pubs for a meal or a pint.
Self-Catering Accommodation: Narrowboats are equipped with all the essentials for a comfortable stay, including sleeping quarters, a kitchen, bathroom facilities, and a cozy living area. You'll have the freedom to prepare your own meals onboard or dine out at local pubs and restaurants along the route.
Wildlife Spotting: The canal and its surrounding habitats are home to a variety of wildlife, including ducks, swans, herons, and kingfishers. Keep an eye out for otters, water voles, and other elusive creatures that inhabit the waterways.
Relaxation and Adventure: Whether you're seeking a peaceful retreat or an active outdoor adventure, a narrowboat holiday on the Kennet and Avon Canal offers the perfect blend of relaxation and exploration. You can spend your days cruising along the water, cycling or walking along the towpath, or simply relaxing on deck and watching the world go by.
Overall, a holiday on a narrowboat on the Kennet and Avon Canal promises a memorable and enriching experience, allowing you to immerse yourself in the beauty of the English countryside and the rich history of the canal network. It's a truly unique way to travel and connect with nature, offering a refreshing escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life.

This was our first canal boat trip and we had glorious weather. The couple that we went with are on another canal boat holiday now - and it's pouring with rain :( Tx for watching

That was beautiful. I'd be terrified getting a narrow boat through a lock! 😊❤ 5:50

Hi Anne, yes it is a bit hairy at times. Luckily for us, Barry and Helen that we went with, had been before so Barry did most of the driving (and all of the complicated driving). It was a great 5 days in sunny summer weather. Good fun. Tx for watching and all the best, Rob

Brilliant!! We hired a too long narrowboat just before lockdowns. Scary going through a lock and I managed to somehow ram a stationary boat 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️ Looked like a lot of fun. But careful with those sills in the lock!! 😃

Hi Simon, yes well worth thinking about. We had great weather, which was a plus. I'm going to do a 'tips' video. If you go at busy times, my biggest tip would be 'be prepared not to get a proper mooring'. Of our 4 nights in August, 2 were at makeshift moorings on the canal bank. The narrowboat companies provide pegs and a gang plank, so it's not too bad unless you moor next to nettles, which we did one night (see the part 2 video :) ). Still, that won''t worry an outdoors man like you Simon! :) Tx for watching and all the best, Rob
