I guess its cool they ended it here. Shows Bernard's progress to be able to engage with the real world. He actually went to a party without totally ruining it for his friends or burning anything down. Then he handled some pretty rough news without any insane amount of drama. Even though he was rough on Fran he still didn't kick her out and showed he still cared about her despite her keeping that info from him for a few years.

Watching the end of this episode I get the feeling that Fran may possibly be the only person in the world Bernard truly loves. Even after he found out that she kept a vital secret from him for years, he still wants her to stay for a drink and then tucks her in with his coat after she falls asleep on his sofa. That is as close to tenderness we’ll ever see Bernard get. I’m glad they closed the series on that note between them. I think they will grow old together in perpetual drunkenness and anti-social behavior. Manny may move on, but Bernard and Fran are platonic life partners.

I think they did this really well with Bernard‘s character; they let enough of the studied gruffness slip at times to show both Manny and Fran meant so much to him, without taking away his ability and credibility to deliver rapier-wit lines.

It's bittersweet. It's a sad ending but the timing was impeccable. Anymore than 3 seasons would be too much. This is bittersweet, but it's for the best.

Bernard's story actually made me a bit melancholy, even if it made for a great joke. I felt like it totally affected the tone. Like he was oddly vulnerable.

"Years later," I found myself mumbling lines from this series to myself while slaving away as a phd student in a Biology lab in Scandinavia. The only ones who got me were two fellow students from Britain and Ireland, respectively. Imagine bonding over phrases like "Fuck a monkey!" and "This is what Napoleon would have had if he'd been a bit strapped" when you drop vials of liquid nitrogen or 96% ethanol all over the bench...

You don't actually have a heart Bernard, just a shard of ice. You don't see yourself as a human, you're some kind of superior species ; Homo Bernadass. Scorning every fool who believes in happiness. You don't know what love is. If I could, I would write every dialogue of these episodes. Such well written dialogues. I appreciate the writers's efforts. Black books is like art , original and only one tiny story. Thank you to all who made these series. Thanks to you too Dead Parrot ! :)

Looking back I think what really made this show is the line delivery...I bet they worked hard on takes. The writing is good and the actors did it with the right tones and expressions

Genuinely a perfect ending to what's as close to a perfect show as anything else. Manny gets fifteen minutes of happiness after the ordeal of sticking around with Bernard for the duration of the show, and it may or may not blossom into something more depending on whether he fucks it up. Bernard still cares for Fran even after that unpleasant revelation. They're all boozed up beyond belief, and they'll probably continue on that way into old age, but the care for each other is tangible even though it's all very understated. Quintessentially British, and perfectly done by writers and actors alike. Bravo

10:52 Must've been an Easter Egg sort of thing that Fran keeps pointing her liver... The whole series: writing, acting (how much fun they seemed to have had and get along) and the amazing amount of set design/set up for each scene was exquisite. Thank for something that will withstand the test of time. Truly. Now to re-watch!

It really went out on a high note. Great stuff. British TV, they actually have the guts to end it in a timely manner, not like here in the States, where shows linger on forever, like the Simpsons.

Or Friends...or Frasier....both of which had great starts, but then droned on and on and on and on...repeating the same tedious, uninspired, banal, vapid, derivative plots. In Friends, Rachel just kept going round and round and round....in the end, the show pretty much became all about Rachel and her baby. In Frasier, the Daphne/Niles thing was never-ending. For the first few seasons, the relationship was tangential to the plot..but by the end it consumed the entire show.....and of course Frasier's character changed over the years. He went from a respectable, self- assured, assertive man to an insecure, foppish dilettante, which was essentially Nile's role. Watching the Frasier/Niles interactions became painful. It was like watching two bickering old women. In the end, both shows just got old.

@@CaesarInVa Absolutely right - with both those shows I got so bored I stopped watching, and tuned in to the final few episodes just out of a desire for closure. For some reason, Frasier is still on TV in the UK in the mornings. Sadly, if I ever catch it for a few minutes, I just can't raise even a chuckle at it. It hasn't aged very well.

@@CaesarInVa About ‘Friends’, that is only partly true actually. The series did have a dip in quality around the time when Chandler got married and became boring (some would say mature but I do not see why one would rule out the other) - but what was weird towards the end was the opposite: Rachel had a baby, and then one hardly hears about let alone sees the baby after a while. So no, it certainly did not centre around her and her baby.

I appreciate the notion to reveal a horrible tragedy in Bernard's past, which finally justifies all of his horrible behaviour... only to flip it by explaining he was always a bastard, and the tragedy was merely another thing he carried to look at the world negatively, which he already did.

This is a gem. I like it even more now. I always thought it's a bit Monty Python'ish in a sense, but having watched it for the third time, I now don't see this surrealistic humour that much. It's very down-to-earth and warm. One great show. Too bad they made only three seasons, but as we say here, Good things are not to be exploited. Thanks for sharing this brilliant series, Dead Parrot!

An American show similar in hilariously improbable situations, well written scripts, with an excellent and tight-knit cast that also left the airwaves before they were struggling to fill their time slot was 3rd Rock From the Sun. In 6 seasons (series) they covered every possible human experience and ended their mission to Earth, leaving Rosanne Barr (the Big Giant Head's niece) behind. The American version of The Office is a good example of a show that went on a little too long. Ricky Gervais wrapped it up with a lot of loose ends still loose, and I didn't care for that, or his character in the show, but I finally realized that was the point.

One of the things I've noticed about British TV Studios is they know when to stop making a show. American TV Studios, on the other hand, seem to want to make as many possible seasons of something just to make cash, until the last season is a parody of the first.

Spaced, The Thick of It, Fifteen Stories High, Black Adder, Men Behaving Badly (seasons 2 to about 4 or 5 anyway), The Inbetweeners, Skins, The League of Gentlemen, Funland ... errr ... and many many more too (it's 7:30am and I haven't had my morning cup of tea yet) ;) ... oh, if you're a Red Dwarf fan, try Hyperdrive too (it's a bit uneven, but when it hits it really hits ... both episodes with the people of Queppo in them are hilarious .. "How you will marvel! ... I distinctly saw you marvel ... write that down in the marvel book") ;)
