In this video we spend the day at Wangaratta; a small city on Victoria's North East line with a population of 29,080 around 236km north east of Melbourne. Wangaratta is served by V/Line Albury Line services, and the Sydney - Melbourne XPT operated by NSW Trainlink. In the video we see some V/Line Vlocity DMU's and some NSW Trainlink XPT's. We also see a couple of freight trains including Pacific National's 7SM2 container train hauled by NR46, LDP005, TT112, NR30 & NR51, and QUBE's 7WM7 steel train hauled by QL003, CF4405 and an unidentified QL locomotive.
The majority of the clips were filmed at the stations' two footbridges at Docker Street and Cusack Street. Wangaratta is unique as its one of the few remaining stations along the line to retain its footbridges. However both footbridges will be demolished in the future to make way for the Inland Rail Project which will enable double-stacked containers to operate along the line. Infact the Cusack Street footbridge will close for good on the 29th June 2023.
The 1960's cutting for the then new standard gauge line is also on the chopping block. The footbridges and cutting will be replaced by a new relocated railway line adjacent to the existing line. This will involve constructing a new second platform and a pedestrian underpass.
Wangaratta station opened on the 28th October 1873 as the temporary terminus of the North East Line from Benalla, before being extended to Wodonga on the 21st November 1873. The station building was completed in 1874 and is still largely intact. The station precinct including the station building, signal box, goods shed, and the water tower, is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register.

The design changes that they made to the Vlocities look great. The sleaker headlights and the wider windscreen give it more modern look.

You are not giving enough time on the screen comments to enable proper reading.

How will the double stacking run because they will have to take the top container off to get through the Bunbury street tunnel I assume they will have a big yard just north of craigieburn

Yes that's correct; they're building an inter modal terminal at Beveridge just north of Melbourne where the double stacked container trains will be loaded and unloaded.

6:00 It seems that the Sydney-bound XPT had only the rear loco powering - am I right?

It certainly looks and sounds like that. 🤔

Is this a standard gauge line?
@FromtheWindowSeat
@FromtheWindowSeat Год назад
Yes it is. Used to be separate standard and broad gauge lines but the broad gauge line was converted to standard so the route is now properly duplicated between Seymour and the NSW border.

@@FromtheWindowSeat Thanks. So do I take it Victoria has standard gauge Velocities and broad gauge ones?
@FromtheWindowSeat
@FromtheWindowSeat Год назад
@@phillipcollins9290 That’s right. The vast majority of the fleet is broad gauge, of course.

15:14 Is there a teardrop bell on that crossing? And which crossing is it? So cool that quite a few country crossings at least still have mechanical bells.

Nunn Street, Benalla, it’s the last crossing with a Teardrop between Melbourne and Albury
