Passing chords are a great Jazz trick to add some surprising but also beautiful sounds to chords. In this video, I will show you 4 types of passing chords and examples of how they sound and how to use them. You can use the examples to get them into your own playing and add amazing new colors to how you play chords.

Thanks. I think the key to this is understanding the melodic implications (a la the top note) as you implied right near the end of the video. Ways to practice creating melodies in this context would be useful for me.

5:50 If you play a D minor 7 arpeggio at the nut, if you use your pinky on the D on the third fret of the B string, then you can set yourself up to play a Bb Major 7 by placing your index on the Bb on the first fret A string. Your fingers would already be in position. I start on the open D string and play through skipping the C and falling back on it. This maybe is more of a Rock voicing, but also works well in Jazz. The Bb Major 7 and Dm7 are pretty much the same chord.
@damonshanabarger2604
@damonshanabarger2604 4 года назад
The D to the Bb is a ∆3rd. Inverted is a minor sixth so the Bb∆ = Dm7 (add b6)

One thing I've noticed is going up, Dim7 chords are used. Like "A Fine Romance": (Cmaj7, C#dim7, Dm7, D#dim7, Em7) Going back down from the E, 7th chords are used (Em7, D#7, Dm7, C#7, Cmaj7). There's a few jazz songs that do this, so I tend to adopt them as a decent jazzy option. Not sure on the theory (I guess a C#dim7 has all the notes of an A7b9, except for the A note. An A7 wants to go to D, so a C#dim7 has a similar effect...? Maybe? That's as far as I've gotten on that.

Thanks Jens. Every time I watch you I learn something new. Was also initially puzzled by the Em7 = Cmaj7(9) but remembered something I read from Frank Gambale in the 90's explaining the same principle long before I became interested in jazz chord melody. G7 = Cmaj11 without the root or third and Bm7b5 = Cmaj13 without the root, third or 5th (Anyway I think this is right 😅)

@matthewhennessey5967
@matthewhennessey5967 4 года назад
What I've learned from Aimee Nolte (I'm no expert), is that dim7 chords are kind of a substitute for fancy 7th chords. Like if you're traveling from Cmaj7 to Dm7, you could toss an A7 in between, because A7 wants to go to D. An C#dim7 has all the same notes as an A7b9, except for the actual A note. So Cmaj7, A7, Dm7 is cool, and also Cmaj7, C#dim7, Dm7 works as well. The b9 of an A7b9 isn't a chord that exists in any major scale, so that's a whole other can of worms I don't understand (it seems adding wierd notes to a 7th chord is fine, it just adds more tension that gets resolved by getting to your destination (Dm7 in this lame example). This is all I know.

Matthew Hennessey wow! Thank you!
@matthewhennessey5967
@matthewhennessey5967 4 года назад
@@yellowmustard7482 Here's a cheap unreliable rule: if you have a 7th chord, then you can swap it for a dim7 chord 4 frets up. Got an E7 chord? Maybe try an Abdim7 instead. I'm sure it doesn't work all the time, but it's a good expirement to play with. Definitely check out Aimee Nolte. She plays piano, but she explains stuff really well. (I am untrained, I'm not a reliable source of music knowledge).

Great lesson, as ever. Do you have any advice on how to reconcile the use of non-diatonic passing chords with not getting in the way of the soloist, in terms of creating tensions that might not otherwise exist?
@matthewhennessey5967
@matthewhennessey5967 4 года назад
If it's a set solo that doesn't change, maybe take a peek at the notes the soloist plays during these passing tone options. Some of these tricks might work, other ones might clash. Maybe a bit of trial and error. I guess a general rule of thumb is that two notes right next to each other will clash, but if you have a little more space, it "should" work...? (C with C# is dissonant, but C with D? Maybe not too bad). Best I got.
@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen 4 года назад
Any of these chords are only used for a very short time, so the tension resolves pretty much immediately. If you sustain the chords it really becomes a reharmonization :)

@matthewhennessey5967
@matthewhennessey5967 4 года назад
There's probably a multitude of reasons. Like where he adds an Ab7 before a G7. You could make it an Abmaj7 (borrowed from the parallel minor scale). As a lame bassist, there's a jazz trick where you just play a note one up or below your destination chord (spider bass, or something like that). So I'd assume you could do a Gb7 right before a G7 also. It seems to me, as long as you establish that your going somewhere, there's a lot of "cheating" you can do in between, because the listener knows the "correct" chord will be coming up, and solve the tension of those wierd chords. I usually try to play it straight, to establish an expectation, then add some of these tricks (which I just learned some new ones from this video), so the audience has an expectation of relief and familiarity. Hope this helps. I have a ton to learn from this guy.
