Passing my B1 Goethe Exam with ASSIMIL German

Assimil is a truly terrific tool to keep up a disciplined revision regime pre-exam time. I learnt a lot and solidified a lot. The perfect combo.
I was also cramming in lessons and as much German-ising as humanely possible. (Yes, this is a word).
Always inspired by the wonderful ‪@ProfASAr‬ who used Assimil in one of his videos.
Any questions about the exam itself or handy tips, let me know.
Thanks to Bensound.com for the music.

Inspiring. I had seen too many videos promising I could get fluent if I just let it wash over me like a warm bath. Much better to see someone slogging through it like I am, and then getting the results.

Sehr gut gemacht Jen!

@@jenniferc23 Luca Lampariello is a polyglot who speaks what, something like 11 languages, incredibly well. He attributes a lot of his success in language learning to Assimil and has devised his own method for using it, called bi-directional translation. He's now become something of an internet guru flogging courses etc but you can piece together his method from various articles and interviews. Essentially it consists of translating Assimil dialogues back and forth between L1 and L2 in an SRS style whilst self-correcting your written attempts. By the way, your reaction upon finding out your exam results was fantastic. Very well done!

Hey, thank you for responding to our questions in the comments!! I have a question please, I'm reading a lesson everyday, but I don't feel I'm quite learning... yes I know a bunch of words now, and if I read the past 5 lessons I can understand what the text is saying... but as I said I don't really feel I'm learning, is that a normal feeling?? Oh, and is reading enough??? I mean do I need to do analysis on every word I see in the text; "what it's meaning, or what does this correlative do and why is it here" and so on and so forth.. I really appreciate your help!! thanks!🙏🙏🙏

Morning my friend, B1 Assimil German book helped me revise three months before: www.amazon.co.uk/German-Approach-English-Ease/dp/2700508297/ref=sr_1_1?crid=23N31NO6654Q0&keywords=assimil+german+b1&qid=1703324387&sprefix=assimil+german+b1%2Caps%2C76&sr=8-1 I had a weekly lesson with a teacher for around a year before that which helped me build up some foundational things I'd forgotten from a decade ago. Then I joined a group Goethe class then a couple months before I had a individual class. So lots of practise, lots of chatting to people on the Tandem language app too.

I’ve started assimil for Spanish. I already have some background in Spanish. I just wanted to ask how much time you spent on each chapter. For the current chapters I’m on they are only taking 10/15 minutes each at most. Not sure if I’m doing something wrong and should be going through the audio more times What process did you follow? I’d also like to ask where you took classes? Via italki, Lingoda ?
@jenniferc23
@jenniferc23 11 месяцев назад
Hello Daniel, thanks for the question! Congrats on your Spanish! I took on average 35 minutes to go through each chapter. I'd listen to the audio whilst reading in German a few times, then I'd take time to look over the words and vocab. Then I'd speak it out loud as many times as I could. This helps me as I am a performer so can learn lines and phrases fairly easily. This initial practise increased to around 45 minutes for the second wave when you have to go back through the older sessions and translate from English into German. If the language feels far too easy, then I would suggest a higher level, but careful you're not skipping through because you don't want to break the tricky things down. Hope that makes sense. I was a false beginner for German too. I took classes as well in small groups online, had a one to one teacher once a week, but it was all too expensive and had to stop two months before the exam. I spoke to people I knew in German as much as possible until I bored myself senseless. Would recommend finding someone (who isn't just looking for a creepy dating partner) on Tandem app too.
