literary analysis of lana del rey's song "born to die". in my opinion this song is about a chaotic love that was fated to end from the very beginning. our protagonist recognizes this--but still seems attached to this love, hoping to reunite with them at "the gates"...this song is filled to the brim with passion, unbalance, chaotic energy....how do you interpret this song?!

HI! Love your lana reviews as always and I'm here to put my dark interpretation as I usually do. Born To Die is obviusly talking about a relationship but I can see a hidden existential meaning too. Lana has a degree on metaphysic phylosophy and she said in interviews that she was very lost in her youth in a phylosophical way, she had a lot of existential questions that were burning inside her and not being able to answer them was really affecting her, that's why she choose to study phylosophy. With that being said I believe Born To Die can have a second meaning (we know how much does lana love to put double meanings in her songs) about all of us human beings being literally born to die, our propose is only to die, that's a very nihilistic point of view and we know lana was very turned to that in her early years. In the intro she is asking why? to a superior being, why as the most basic existential question; why are we here? Why does anything exist at all? Why I have to go through this thing called life? The first verse may be one of my fav verses in music history: she presents a grandiloquent escenario where she is at the gates of heaven with life being represented as a race or I would say more like a marathon and she feels tired of it, her feet hurts, she is been through so much she only can think about the end, she asks a superior being for strength to get to the end of it. Then suddenly she transports us to a completly diferent scenario where the protagonist is exactly as we left her but her surroundings can't be more oposite of the ones before: they went from the more grandiloquent to the more mundane. She is walking tired but this time she is surrounded by the city at night, maybe just going back home from work and we can imagine she is "struggling" to get there (this time home would be her finish line), her feet hurt etc. she just wants to rest again. She is talking about 2 completly diferent things and still lana is able to draw a magnific paralel situation. As she walks back home she lets her mind go and asks herself existential questions, making an unexpected conexion between the two scenarios. In the second verse I see the road as life itself, already presented this way in the first line of the song. The ending of the second verse may be the saddest part of the song to me, I see that through her eyes life is fundamentally pain and there is only little times where she can try to have fun. She needs drugs to sedate herself cause life itself is a burden and I understand her 100% how this existential thread in your head can avoid you to really conect with life, so you just live in a constant void that never goes away and makes every day or every step really dificult. Finally, verse 3 is the verse that relies more into this existential meaning of the song. She talks about what I said at the begining: she had a lot of existential questions in her youth (I was so confused as a little child), trying to get what I couldn't get references the fact that you can't answer the questions that she was trying so bad to answer (why we are here, why do we exist...). She wanted all the answers, and was so scared of living a life without them. But she is able to see all of that, and accept that she is not gonna find those answers, that's why she was lost and blind but now she is find and able to see that putting so much effort into trying to solve those questions was gonna lead always to nowhere.
