We all love those bright days with punchy colours but personally I find them a bit tiring after a while. On this outing to the Moelwynion mountain range in Snowdonia I opt to shoot with Portra 160 for a much more subtle result, and I'm more than happy with the images I got.

Can't imagine Steve in the "calm". Usually he is being blown off the mountains by the wind or hiding behind rocks so that he can be heard. Must of been magically for you. 🙂

My Welsh Grandfather wandered these mountains as a young lad before emigrating to Canada and it is such a pleasure to follow along with you in possibly the same locations as he did. I get giddy with anticipation when I see another Steve O'nions video pop up! Thank you as always, Steve for your excellent presentations.

I really like the B&W pic of sheep @ 6'.15". Has great atmosphere and feeling 👍🏻 So many landscape photographers are all about high megapixel images with amazing detail, focus stacking etc but those mostly leave me cold. Image and feeling are all. Nice image 👍🏻

I loved that little cloud. What a fantastic image. I miss Snowdonia. My sister in-law lived in a little village called Rhylis in Snowdonia National Park. We visited her one last time before she moved back to Ireland. We traveled to Shrewsbury then across to Snowdonia and then down the West coast of Wales and then the South Coast. I wish I lived up North where the great mountains are.

With todays trend to over be enthusiastic with the Velvia slider, your vlog is a welcome change Steve. I dabble occasionally with C41, preferring E6 for colour. Perfect example of how you don’t need the “best” camera or the most expensive lens to create beautiful photographs.. you just need the determination to get the shot, and an eye for good composition. Of course it helps to live close to such beautiful surroundings 😏. Nicely done sir. I’m in Kansas in the US, so pretty much nothing but flat farmland with no hills, let alone mountains.

Thanks James, it’s a wonderful spot to photograph and I don’t think I’ve ever been up there when the light is uninteresting. It’s a pity in some ways the old mine workings are quite a walk from the nearest road but I suppose that also keeps it relatively quiet and unspoilt.

I think you're really onto something with the Portra. The photos you've taken with it lately have been gorgeous. I'm really partial to painterly photography a bit like the pictorialists once practiced. What sorts of distances do you walk on days like this and what is the vertical gain by the end of the day? Do you track it? I'm American so not familiar with mountains in the UK.
@SteveONions
@SteveONions 8 месяцев назад
I’ve also enjoyed the Portra shoots and have done a couple more recently. I’m a big fan of the pictorialist era and think we lost something when ‘straight’ photography became the norm. Most walks are between 8 and 12 miles and typical elevation overall is 3500 feet. If I need to spend more time on the photography I have to choose shorter walks of around 6 miles.

I take as many precautions as possible while out. I leave a map with my wife showing the route and where I park. I share my location from my smartphone and only walk marked trails, there will always be someone else around at some point. I also take no chances and use walking poles most of the time.

@@SteveONions Hello Steve! Thank you for your answer. Glad to hear that it is qualiatively enough for your prints. Ir may be beneficial for larger formats than 35mm, especially 4x5 and above. I use standard res mode on my G9 for 35mm and the hires (40mp) mode for 6x6. Above those settings you’re just enhancing the grain.

I am curious about 3 things. How far in total did you walk for the video and shots? What did they mine in that area? I hear overexposing portra brings out the pastels better, is that true? Thanks, nice work, best wishes!
@SteveONions
@SteveONions 8 месяцев назад
Thanks John. It was about 11 miles in total, that whole area is renowned for its slate which is reckoned to some of the best in the world. Overexposing colour print film is a popular technique as it can produce lovely muted tones but it also robs most films of some of their saturation. With skies in particular this can leave things looking a bit washed out so it’s sometimes a good idea to use a graduated ND filter (as I’ve done on a recent trip - video coming soon).
