Pastelmat Paper Review and Demonstration 

Hi Matt, The “cover paper” for each sheet is glassine, it’s non-wax. The blending on pastelmat is much essier once there are at least two or three layers down. Pastelmat is also suitable for acrylics, oils, watercolour etc in fact virtually any medium 🙂 The best way to utilise pastels on pastelmat is to use pastels for under layers then pastel pencils for details. The only issue I encounter with pastelmat is what I call “hot spots” where pastel may not take to a certain part of the sheet. This doesn’t happen often, and correct storage is important. I forgot to mention that no fixative is needed. Hope this helps. 🙂

Newbie to the pastels and pastelmat. I could blend and layer properly on this pastelmat. It's just awesome. I tried previously on other kinds of paper, that dint work well. When something works like magic for a beginner, then it is a super hit product. Thanks for the video.

I’m new here and I love your demonstration ! I use Pastel mat a few year now and I love it ! Nowadays there are more colors of the paper , such as warm brown, green, black . I once began drawing on My Teinte paper and than the Pastel Mat and always use it , it’s like you said, you can draw layer on layer on layer and it is sooo smooth !!

Thanks for the great video. I use PastelMat for all my pastel painting. I agree that it is the best paper to use. I do animal and human portraits using pastel pencils and regular pastels.

This video is dripping passion for art. The instructor is so happy with his, I must say, fabulous apple. If it wasn't so very late right now I would leave my bed, wake the neighbors up and well... draw apples lol. So much fun this video, will try the pastelmat for sure 👍

I have tried so many pastel papers but I keep going back to Pastel mat! It's a little pricey but well worth it for me.

I like the green you did with the water.....would make a lovely background for birds or forest

Hi Matt, Great review. I have started using Pastelmat a little - I caved in and spent the money because I had to see how it handled pastels. And it made my experience with pastels all I had ever imagined they could be. That doesn't mean that I suddenly became more talented but the pastels and I could work together. Prior to that, it felt almost like we were fighting. I would lay down the pastel and half of it would jump back off the paper as dust. The Pastelmat seems to hold onto the medium. As some have noted, this makes it more challenging to blend - but I like the blending results better! I don't have the same love of blending with my fingers that you do. To blend, I found that if I put a tissue (like ordinary Kleenex) over my finger that it blended better on Pastelmat, with the added benefit of my fingers not getting so dirty. Also, I'm less apt to forget what color is on a particular finger and accidentally create a mess. So I've become a Pastelmat fan very quickly...

I purchased this paper, stick pastels and pastel pencils. I’m so nervous to start as I can go along great with a video, but on my own, I’m no good. I’m going to try this out. I’d like to try your Goldfish video as well. I like your teaching style. Thank you for sharing!

It also has another benefit: you can wash the pastel off if you make a mistake. It doesn't take it back to the original colour, but it does take a lot of the pastel off and therefore makes it easier to start a new drawing.

I just used pastelmat and was not as happy as I thought I would be. Very difficult to blend, if at all. Plus, Very easy to smudge

Hi Matt, I loved your video tutorial using the Pastelmat. I haven't done any pastel drawing/painting yet but getting ready to start. I'm wondering about doing pastels on other surfaces. I am also a picture framer and I have an abundance of mat board. Do you think pastels would do ok using this type of mat board? Thanks, Ron

Thank you for this review. I love Pastelmat, but I have the problem that dust gets in the pores of the paper and only kann be removed by a brush

Hi, I bought Pastel mat Anthrocite and find it very difficult to blend large areas?

Hi. I love your tutorials! Would you be able to recommend a home printer that could print line art onto pastel paper and cardstock? I'm trying to figure out how to print images on both to then colour them myself. I want to use pastels on images printed pastel paper, and the same coloured pencils and markers on cardstock. If possible, I'd also like to do the same on watercolour paper. I hope that makes sense. 😊

Do the oils in your finger affect the pastels?

Matt, I paint realism using mostly Apersand Pastelbord. Can you tell me how the grit compares to Pastelbord and Uart 600? thanks!

It seems like the colors I put down are the colors. The colors don’t seem to layer or blend. I have Uart for years and it is difficult to transition from what I am used to. I see why people like it. I will keep trying it though.

Hi, Mat, thanks for info on this paper. Have you tried the Hahnemuhle velour pad or the pastelfix by the same company? Would love you for you to do a review on, as cheaper than the pastelmat. Dickblick sells the pads.Please do a review if able. I have heard velour does not create a lot of dust.

I was told that if you only do artwork on the paper and no background it’s called a drawing. If you also do the background and artwork it’s called a painting.

you mean you tested the pastel sticks on a whole sheet of pastelmat .... that's being a real spendthrift I say..these papers are sooooooo expensive' oh.that was five years ago..now i am sure you are more wary when using these pastel mat sheets ....whenever i start a new painting i tremble before i put my pencil on the surface of this paper
