I wouldn't even call this a rant. I think this is perfectly fine. He is just being very up front and honest. He doesn't raise his voice or drop F bomb or S Bomb like his dad or other coaches. I would hope Division I basketball MEN can handle coach just trying to motivate his players. There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with this. This is Division I MEN'S basketball.
The man kept it real and spoke the truth and he got suspended over this? Bullshit. Coaches do this type of shit in the lockeroom but act fake as fuck to the media. Coaches like this are a dying breed, keep keeping it real pat!
For everyone saying he is the problem; his team had a massive turnaround after this and made the NCAA tournament. Coming from a former collegiate coach sometimes you have to call out your players when you’re doing all you can and they aren’t performing. The coach can’t play they can only coach to the best of his or her ability.
There's nothing wrong with holding kids accountable, but you don't do what he did at a press conference. He basically skirted any responsibility for the performance of the team up until that point, and brought up personal issues players were having that should have stayed in the locker room. He basically expressed that it wasn't his fault and he had misfits for players (the seniors at least). It's the quickest way to fester mistrust and insubordinance from your players. Keep in mind that this was the only successful season during his coaching tenure at Lamar, and they went to the NCAA tournament that year. The following two years he went 3-22, 3-28, was fired, and he hasn't coached a game since. For someone who obtained his coaching jobs partially due to nepotism, he didn't have the clout or winning history to be calling out players like like that. The guy only coached one season out of four with a winning record (and none within conference play) prior to the 2011-2012 season. The hypocrisy is very amusing.
I don't know the particulars in regard to this video, but it's true: high school or college. You have to have senior leadership. They've been on campus from 2 -4 years. They need to set an example of excellence and represent their school with honor, integrity, and drive. I'm not a Knight fan, especially Bobby Knight, but Pat is right in this instance. I'd bench the sorry suckers if were me.
