Gotta be honest I've never understood the whole 'don't run up the score' mindset. It's not like its parents playing with their kids, it's grown ass adults playing competitive sports. If you suck, you suck. Take your beating and learn from it.

The ONLY time I can understand getting annoyed or frustrated is in basketball when the game has 10 seconds left everyone accepted the game is over and a player goes for a steal or takes a wide open shot just to try and get a few more points. Although I do understand if you disagree with that too

Some plays just delay an already finished game. Why go for an onside kick up 40 or go for a 3rd and 5 with 10 seconds left when ur up by 3 scores when you can take a knee? Some plays yeah you play until the game is over but some things you shouldn’t do as a courtesy for someone else.

As a rangers fan, it doesn’t matter how many runs you’re up or the count. Don’t throw a pitch that can get rocked if you can’t handle a homer. Also why was the score a factor? Didn’t we put up 30 on the Os? We were swinging at the end of that game.
@ramirorybczuk9100
@ramirorybczuk9100 3 года назад
That was something not so many people talked about. Like, you don't like getting homered with the count 3-0? Then try to throw a decent pitch, don't expect a monster hitter to be nice.

@Michael Heathman If tatis took the 3-0 pitch, he probably would've gotten some offspeed to setup a double play ball and he's down 3-2 now. If the pitcher didn't want Tatis hitting 3-0, he shouldn't have tried nibbling with sliders the first two pitches, and then miss outside with a fastball. Tatis just saw the fastball, the pitcher has to hit the zone, why wouldn't he swing. If the rangers are still trying to come back and win then why should the Padres stop trying to score

The Rangers had 2 innings left to come back and score 7 runs to tie the game. We have seen games where a team scored 6-9 runs an inning. So that grand slam by Tatis was the extra insurance runs/nail to the coffin to win in case the rangers sneaked back in the game and scored runs.

All throughout little league from T-ball to senior division ball I was taught by my coaches to have fun and play the game with a “Sandlot mentality”. That all ended when I started playing high school baseball and my coaches and peers enforced the “unwritten rules” upon me. I was called “classless” and even was called a “thug” because I flipped a bat after crushing a home run in practice! After my sophomore year my motivation for playing baseball was crushed because I couldn’t be myself anymore. I still love baseball but I understand why baseball doesn’t appeal to kids anymore.

Baseball is the team sport where a individuals stats matter most at the end of the season that home run will add value to him may help him get a on the all-star team during the season anything helps.

There were several issues that weren't discussed. One was that Tatis missed the third base coach sign for him to take. The pitch was a strike, low and outside, but Tatis has good power to the opposite field so he took a swing and added four more RBIs to his stats. The other issue is that Manny Machado had the next pitch thrown behind him, so in a sense Tatis put a teammate in the crosshairs. With a pitching staff that stinks and only 60 games this season I'm sure the Padres players will be swinging for the fences to score more runs, but also giving the fans what they want. By the way, in the second game of that series against Texas Will Myers hit a another grand slam in the first inning.

As a baseball fanatic, this is one of the dumbest “rules”, unwritten or otherwise, that’s ever been uttered. You don’t want the guy to send one to your moms front porch? Don’t groove one down the middle regardless of the count

The "unwritten rules" comparison (for football) is being up 30 on some team and you leave your starters in or you're still throwing the ball

28-3 😂 .....never stop playing until it’s over. If you have a dominant season or team, do not lower your standards for the competition if your getting PAID to do so. Football IS different, because of injuries due to fatigue. But baseball isn’t as demanding. They were just ready to go home.

It's not unwritten because it's negotiated each time, but in football if one team is trying to run out the last few plays, the offensive lineman say "we're kneeling ". And if the defensive line says okay, nobody hits each other. But if the O line says it and the D line is silent, the the O line knows to be ready to block.

The Rangers beat the Orioles 30-3 like 5 years ago. They didn't seem to have a problem with it then. No lead is safe and you should always try to score more runs.

I think it’s a mutual understanding/respect in baseball that your limited on pitchers so if your out of fresh pitchers the other team could just tee off and make the game longer, risk injuries, use up more players and then next game it’s the other team’s advantage so it’s a mutual thing that we lost let’s go out fresh and healthy and the other team gives us that respect tomorrow

The only time I've really seen this in football was when Chris Boniol tied the record for field goals in a game. The Packers weren't really happy about the Cowboys kicking a short field goal when Dallas was up 12 points with a minute to play. When they realized that it was for the record, they were ok with it and congratulated Boniol. That said, any hitter that doesn't swing at a hanger with a 3-0 count straight up isn't a hitter.

One unwritten rule in football I can think of... When the offense is up and has enough downs to run the clock out, you let them kneel without crashing the O line. I remember someone not doing that a few years back and it was a pretty big deal.

I'm on the side of Michael Irvin from a baseball standpoint. If someone hits a homerun off me, pimp it, do what you do...but don't get butthurt if I strike you out and go crazy. Be a better pitcher to stop homers, or be a better hitter to not strikeout.

These are the same people that got mad for Damien William's running for the TD in the superbowl rather than running the clock out. He was 2nd in the running for superbowl MVP before that and just made a name for himself even more with the touchdown.

Yes there are unwritten rules in the NFL. The most obvious one that comes to mind is that when you're blowing a team out, you start moving to less air attack and more ground game. This lends itself to not running up the score. Unwritten rule.

They say it doesn’t make sense but they do it in football and basketball when the second string goes in. Gets close, first string goes back in. Gets close, you swing on that pitch. but all do it. btw- I have no issue of putting the pedal down when you’re up at that level, but I’m also for good sportsmanship too.

There’s a couple unwritten rules in football that I’ve seen but maybe Pat doesn’t want to talk about, but they aren’t quite as drastic as baseball. Like at the end of the game, if you look over at the other coach and they give you the down sign then you can just take a knee to end to end the game. Don’t remember who I saw going over this. In basketball, it’s appreciated if you don’t score the last possession if you’re going to win but if stats are on the line or something then stats.
