Kicking is one of the most interesting variables in sports imo. The fact that the creators of football thought “let’s put something into the game worth 1 or 3 points” is genius, and has greatly contributed to some of the most tense moments in sports history. So many classic nailbiters come down to a guys leg, in a sport where the ball is mainly thrown, is hilarious and awesome.

“Kickers aren’t footballers” Well ignoring the fact they’re the only ones who’s foot touches the ball. The punter is a specialist defence player. The kicker is a specialist offence player. And they’re specialty is so important that just like oLine men you only notice them when they get their role wrong, and usually then proceed to blame them for a loss. Because a shanked punt let the opponent get into field goal range easily. Or a missed field goal losses a game.

Would games even be competitive anymore…? If an offense can’t move the ball we’d actually witness game scores that could hit as high as 100 to 0 or whatever. Dominant teams would keep scoring and scoring off easy field positioning. Let’s say to solve this it’s turnover on downs and start at the 20 like a touchback. That just makes the game 1 dimensional…a bit more boring. Instead of an extra point you always go for 2. Disgusting 🤢 that means a higher probability of scoreless games as well…a turnover happens in a stalemate game in good field position they won’t be able to score.

The way to solve this is to incorporate MORE kicking. Make the drop kick 4 pts. Allow kick passes. I don’t know.

Way back in the day that was actually legal in American football! You could basically punt the ball forward whenever you wanted, and if you recovered the ball, you got to advance up the field. Kind of like rugby rules.

I actually agree with Skip on this one.. it takes skill and I bet a lot of them like Pat are great dudes but c’mon. They’re not NFL caliber athletes. They are like golfers. Let’s have an awesome athletic sport and then bring a golfer on to execute an impressive skill move. Idk, downvote me. Let’s not pretend that Skip is entirely wrong on this one. We can acknowledge there’s a difference in athleticism from kickers to the others on the roster
@MikeBNumba6
@MikeBNumba6 2 года назад
Skip definitely has a point. And everyone who played football at LEAST in high school would Agree. During two a days everyone is busting their butts in practice while the kickers are barely breaking a sweat. It's why on most teams punters and kickers keep to themselves unless those guys are playing another position like wr or something. It's even worse in college. They practice one skill and that's it. So the game being decided by them is annoying. Yes some kickers can be athletic, but they are not even close to being as athletic as the skill positions on the team
@K3BANG
@K3BANG 2 года назад
Yeah I think Skip's main point was, you have absoloute warriors on the field like Ronnie Lott, Jim Brown etc slugging it out for 60 minutes and sometimes at the end when the scores are tied and the situation is right, out comes a guy that didn't have to go through that battle, looks nothing like a 'warrior', and he is the one that gets to decide the game.

This is the difference as you go up in levels. I was a HIGHLY accurate Long Snapper. I'd do the dumb 'trick shot' stuff like Snapping it 25 Yards. Our QB my Senior Year, the Season before we were in a Wing T and he was a freaking TE. He was our QB ONLY because he was 6'5", because the new Coach played a little Small College QB and thought HS QBs had to be tall. I could hit a 10 Yard Out LONG SNAPPING better than he could throwing. And I had good velocity on it. But one thing I NEVER EVEN CONSIDERED was how the rotation I put on the spin placed the laces. Never crossed my mind. My job was to put the ball, quickly and accurately, into the hand of the Holder. That was it. Now Long-Snapping wasn't my primary function, I was a DT and a RB (at 180 pounds, again were were a very small Alabama HS). But I took my snapping serious. Didn't have a Coach for it, we had a HC and on OL Coach. No OC, no DC, no STC, nothing. So it was all pretty much natural ability. And never in my life, until today, had I ever thought about my role in how the laces get placed on a FG attempt. That's the difference in the levels as you go up. Little things like that, that some one who was 'great' in HS might not even know EXISTS about their craft. Sort of like when I moved up to Varsity from JV when I was at the other (larger) school I attended. On JV I lead the State in Sacks from the DT spot. A friend of mine asked me about how I got my sacks, how I played the position. Then he asked me how I handle pulling guards. No crap, I'd watched NFL and College. I'd played at this point 3 Years of Football (since 6th Grade). I didn't know what a Pulling Guard was. Our season ended, and some of us were bumped up to finish the year out with the Varsity. First practice, a hole opens and I think the OG has blown his assignment. I'm locked in on our much larger and All-County RB... it's my time to shine and try to light this Senior up, show Coach what I can do. And then I'm flying, off to my left, feet off the ground. And instantly, mid-flight, my mind goes back to my buddy... and I do a quick 1+1 and realize "Ah, THIS is what a pulling guard is". I'd just got blown up by a Trap Block. First time ever experiencing one. Now, those that played against bigger schools with better coaches might have known about this way back in 6th Grade. Those that paid more attention when 'watching' NFL and College Football might be aware, but not really sure how to counter that on the field. Me, I was oblivious. Everyone I had ever face had simply Straight Line Blocked, maybe add a Chip or a Double. It was all very simplistic. Then you add this extra layer of complexity. I never blew past an OL again without having my head on a swivel.
