From hearing it, comes off as he was impressed by the knowledge of the fans and he used two women as the example of who he talked to. People are taking it a little over the top imo.

I mean, there is precedent for this kind of "oh wow, your a woman and you know so much about football" kind of line. Remember the Cam Newton press conference? I think it's natural for people to be offended if they have been constantly abused by not what they are saying (which can be right or wrong, smart or dumb) but because of their gender.
i feel like, the direction it's going, it's only gonna be able to go so much further before it reverses course and goes the other way. soon people are gonna start getting cred for racial slurs, bullying, and sexism. if it doesn't make sense to someone reading this, just consider this... people don't make sense.
Nothing wrong with it i'm a sports journalism student who loves everything about sport and i always meet people at uni/sportsbars/online who are shocked i know so much. I bet the people offended by his comments aren't even football or sport fans in general.

Stop whining about "canceling" everytime someone points out someone goofed. Collinsworth is not being canceled, nobody is coming for his head. People simply pointed out that his phrasing was potentially alienating, especially to women. Yeah I remember hearing it live and thinking it was worded kinda poorly. Of course most people would understand what he was trying to say, but there will always be those who are less forgiving than others.
I've become a casual football fan because of this show and all it took was 1 instance of Pat talking about hockey around a year ago. Entertaining stuff guys.

20 years ago, If someone got insulted by it, that's their problem. He was stating his opinion. You hear it, you move on, it's over. ANYTHING can be taken the wrong way. How do we not see what he said. He was complementing the fans of Pittsburgh. He said he met two women who grilled him and was impressed by the questions. He was impressed by normal citizens asking not that they were women
Steelers fans have more female fans than any NFL team. I’m a Steelers fan and I have no problem with Chris Collinsworth’s comment. I think he meant it as a compliment but it just came out wrong.
All Chris said was that Pittsburgh is such a football town that the female fans are as equally involved in the sport as the typical male fans. I doubt he meant no disrespect to any female fans in other cities, but he can only go by his experiences in life. Chris travels to many cities every year for SNF, so he should know what towns have the most engaged fans of either gender. Give the guy a break. You can't even pay a compliment anymore without backlash.
I couldn't tell you what the sex breakdown is for football superfans but I would imagine that it heavily favors men. So Collinsworth is in trouble for stating that its less common to encounter female football superfans compared to men. So when he encounters a larger than normal proportion of female superfans it could be indicative of how much that town loves football. So what was everyone made about? We can't be mad at Collinsworth for saying anything wrong because what he said is correct. Or is everyone mad because he said something forbidden out loud?
@@poling1990 See, that's not even what he said. He said "especially the ladies" "blew him away with in depth questions". He didn't even SAY there were more female superfans. He said the fans he came across that knew the most happened to be women. In other words, they knew more than the MEN who approached him. That's what's crazy about this response to me. He wasn't getting into any of that stuff about demographics or anything. It's the same as saying "A couple guys blew my mind with some in depth queations". Except in this case instead of "a couple guys" he said "the ladies".

As a woman, and huge football fan myself, I find it hilarious when I know more things on my guy friends own teams!! I like Collingsworth too much to be all pissy about it. It’s all about being humble and learning from your mistakes right?
This reminds me of why Cam got dropped by Oikos for Dak. Honestly, there's obviously a ton of female fans of football, especially in my family, but the ones I know mainly like the Cowboys, and only for the cheerleaders. There's a difference between watching the game and knowing how to break down and interpret it to be able to ask educated questions. Women are no doubt a minority when it comes to going that far into football, and it should be okay to praise and bring notice to those individuals that do so. The same way we bring notice to the first NCAA female kicker, and female journslists and coaches as well. People need to stop taking praise for surprised or unwanted involvement when they're just face value compliments to those minorities.
It's not that women don't like football, but it's usually more conditional. In my entire life I've only met one woman who followed football even remotely close to the same level as my friends. The truth is the truth... it IS surprising to talk football with a woman who shares the same level of enthusiasm for the sport as me. That's not a criticism.

You have to read his quote. The only thing he said about women is that they ask specific questions. He said he was blown away by the strength of the fan base. People are somehow now saying he said “I’m blown away by the specific questions women ask.”
As a female, I can say that it is a backhanded compliment when ever anyone says "Wow, you know so much about football!" Just because I have a vagina and wasn't allowed to play football in school doesn't mean, I shouldn't know alot. Don't be impressed by my knowledge, just keep talking to me or treating me like an equal! You wouldn't ever comment on another guy's knowledge on football, you would just keep talking to them. With that being said I am not surprised or angry by it!
Can’t believe this is what people get offended by now. I can count on one hand how many women I know that follow sports regularly as I’m sure most people can. Women, it’s not a slight towards you. I wish people would stop bending the knee and apologizing for these thin skinned individuals.
I’ve rarely met any women who know a lot about football, but I could walk down the street in meet 5 guys who know just as much as me if not more. So when I do meet a woman who knows a lot about football it’s interesting to me. I feel that he was just trying to say that the Pittsburg Steelers have a strong female fan base, which I don’t see anything blatantly wrong with.

Talk about double standard. The girl kicker in Vanderbilt kicks a squib kick that almost went out of bounds, meanwhile Florida’s punt returner gets a 60 yard punt return, and wins SEC special teams player of the week. Which in theory is pretty demeaning towards women, while Chris collinsworth compliments girls on their knowledge of football and gives credit to them and people get offended. Grow a pair of balls America not everyone’s evil.
We live in a society where people are forced to apologize for nothing. I would have told them that if they took that in a negative way then they have deep insecurity issues and need to see a therapist, not apologizing for anything I didn't do
Dude let's be real, I RARELY meet a woman who loves football like my friends and I do, honestly if ever. I know there are women who are super football nerds and love the game but let's keep it 100 and realize that is an EXTREME minority. SO yes, when you meet a woman who can speak football on the same level it is really impressive.
People have to understand that Cris is 61 years old (almost 62). Back when he was growing up in the 1960’s and 70’s in Ohio, it was a much different world. I wouldn’t be surprised if finding woman who were passionate about football was rare, unlike today. So for Cris, it was something to note. This is just an example of expecting an old dog to learn new tricks. Now I know, there are obvious situations when using that phrase doesn’t apply. But this is not one of those times. He was just noting something that is new to him.
Yeah this is nothing like what Cam Newton has done when he spoke to the media. A Female journalist asked Newton a question about routes and he insulted her by saying "it's funny to hear a female talk about routes." To me that is more insulting than what Chris Collinsworth has said. With that quote you can take it 100% that Cam Newton insulted that Journalist's intelligence.

this is a classic case of a group of people who's love for a sport is constantly questioned being a little overly sensitive to his reaction. That being said, women having any variation of knowledge of football should not be shocking or surprising.

I asked a friend of mine what he thinks about women and the NFL. He said that the NFL would be more welcoming to female fans if they weren't actively trying to ruin it.

It's awesome that more women are getting into the game but I'll be completely honest... I'm pleasantly surprised when a chick can really talk Xs and Os (very rare occurrence btw). I dont even like Collinsworth but this is ridiculous, hes completely righteous to feel this way.

Imagine complimenting women for their football knowledge on national TV, and then having to issue an apology because you worded the compliment incorrectly.

i watched the game and heard his comments . I took it as a compliment about the female fan base . anyone who took it any other way is already loooking for things to cry about . just my opinion .
Im the point with the social media outrage machine where my opinion on these situations is 90% on the intent on what the person was saying. Collinsworth was clearly trying to give women a compliment. He worded it badly, but get over it. The intent was good, and he even put a very clear apology out to appease the people who are pretending this is something to care about for more than 3 seconds.
Us Eagles fans got mad at Collinsworth during the 2017 NFC Championship game and Super Bowl, as it seemed like he was siding with the other team. I think in retrospect that he's misunderstood, I think he's just a silly dude.

I heard what he said during the broadcast including the context of the conversation. The guy didn't mean to put anyone down, he was actually trying to bring them up. It was a poor choice of words because it came off like he was saying women don't normally understand football. He apologized, all is forgiven, we should move on. Because if the cancel culture people are coming after him for this mundane comment, they need to get a damn hobby.
