This was the great Geffen period when Pat and Lyle had complete artistic control to produce and release content with NO corporate interference from A&R or finance personnel. Geffen basically gave them the keys to the studio and all the time needed for composing, recording, and release.

So they didn't have that freedom later?? That was a shock!

The PMG were Geffen’s only “jazz” artists at the time, so the company could focus their entire support/promotion on them (ECM and Warner Bros. had numerous other jazz/instrumental artists to promote)

One of my favorite songs from my favorite era. Pat is deep in the zone for the his solo, he’s almost possessed. The outro almost made me scream and I’ve listened to this song probably 1000 times. The transition from the guitar solo to Lyle smashing out those chords is so slick I’m not sure that I even can find the cue. I played in a punk band for over 10 years and we used to make fun of other punk bands that would just stand there when they performed and we always tried to have energy on stage. And here this is a jazz group - and look at pat! What an amazing performance!

One thing I was just admiring is how percussionist Armando Marcal is visible in almost every shot, and shows his beautiful contribution to the groove along with drummer Paul Wertico. This whole thing is so beautifully shot - every angle shows at least three musicians, and you can tell that they are all totally locked into each other. And the camera catches many specific important musical moments and interactions. And the sound is great. Everything I've ever seen from "Night Music" has first class from a technical and artistic perspective. None of that "showing the singers ear during the guitar solo" kind of concert movie lameness.

Loved Night Music! Great show that sadly did not last very long.

Yeah, he's pretty good. If he keeps it up he may be able to find a career in show business.

For me this is golden era Metheny-Mays/Group music. It's the period of Pat's career (Lyle's, too) that I enjoyed the most and I wish it had lasted longer. But as time went on, it evolved into something different, and it never captured my attention in the same way. The Way Up and Speaking Of Now were the albums that marked the fading of the legendary Pat Metheny Group, at least for me. While I practically wore out every Group album before those two, those two didn't get a lot of replays.

The Way Up is really cool too though. It’s a totally different vibe altogether. I definitely agree it doesn’t have the same kind of synth magic like Last Train Home or the tunes on Letter from Home.

Interesting placement of the drummer right out front. Never to underestimate drummers, of course. Paul Wertico lays down a beautiful groove throughout.
