It's 2024 and still ONE OF THE GREAT SONGS OF THE 80s !!! My childhood was there and open to learning about the future!!!! Now , we have a Manchurian administration in the WH and both POTUS and VpOTUS SELLING THE COUNTRY TO THE DE*IL!!! At least this is something before hell breaks loose so enjoy and appreciate peace !!!!! Love y'all and stay safe in 2024.... 2a is your friend and 1a may be lost soon.
Those who connect to this tune, get it, what is relays and what is being said. I believe my first encounter with this fabulous tune was from the live "Travels" album before the studio version from "Offramp." Travels will always has a special place for me!! Look up live video version on RU-vid of, "Are You Going With Me?," from Upojenie (English: Ecstasy) a 2002 collaboration between Polish Pop/Folk singer Anna Maria Jopek and guitarist Pat Metheny, recorded in Warsaw, Poland. The backing band/orchestra make this version special with her added vocals. I would love to get my hands on the live video concert disc of this performance, but only available in Europe in PAL format... contacted Pat's website for US release, but unfortunately no plans for stateside release.
I used to listen to this song everyday taking the train into Chicago and listen to the rest of Offramp LP for the 9 block walk to my work. And, yes, I listened to it on my WALKMAN. I used to go through batteries every week, but it was worth it. Listening to Pat made my daily commute, doable. Pat Metheny will forever be seared into my brain until the end of time.
My Mum who never took any interest or listened to any music , many years ago heard me play this in the car and this was the only time that she had ever asked me about any music " oh what is this music? ... I like it" It was one of only two tracks I played to her at graveside during her funeral years later.. The power of Pat Metheny and his group's music .. a perfect storm...always a shiver down my spine...
I can't imagine not being interested in any kind of music. I've always been fascinated by people creating and playing music. Then again, I'm a guy who doesn't care for sports, lol. I'm definitely in the minority in that department.
RIP, Lyle: I talked with Lyle at a private party in my Wisconsin town of residence, and shook his hand with amazingly-long fingers, and but my greatest honor and amazement was and will continue to be simply being enriched by listening to his music, his musical genius. Experiencing PMG with Lyle several times in the past 20 years has become the soundtrack inside my head, and will be with me always. MDF in Columbus, WI
Same. For me, the rhythm is the rhythm of the tires on my beloved car going over the expansion joints between the concrete freeway slabs. It always takes me home to LA. First heard it 40-odd years ago. It never gets old.
I was in Toronto, Canada buying records at Sam’s in September, 1982. I had just seen Stevie Wonder at the CNE and was buying Sandinista by the Clash. As I’m checking out this song is playing and I asked the clerk “what is this song?” I couldn’t get it out of my head all the way back to my home six hours away.
That song gives me goosebumps every time I hear it, especially as it builds towards the end. Metheny is a guitar maestro. He has a unique sound that you can instantly identify. Only guitar greats get to that level. Except for Metheny, he is known in jazz circles and not in rock arenas. Lets not forget the rest of the group. Lyle Mays has a really nice solo at the beginning playing two synths at one time. Steve Rodby on bass replaced Mark Eagan around the '82 album "Left Turn" for which the song "Are You Going With Me" is off of. Newer members, Paul Wertico joined the group on drums in 84 after Danny Gotlieb left. Multiinstrumentalist and vocalist Pedro Aznar also joined the group in 84. If you have found this video and had your mind blown on Pat Metheny, well congratulations! You found one the of most decorated jazz guitarists you have never heard of. Now, go check out PMG's records. There's a lot of them. This video is from the PMGs best known period. The PMGs most famous records came out of he mid to late 80's. 1987's "Still Life Talking" which is famous for the song "Last Train Home" and the even bigger record, 1989's "Letter From Home". Start there. If you dig the heavy ladened keyboard/guitar synth sound of the 80's check out the soundtrack to the movie "The Falcon and the Snowman". The PMG pretty much did that record with a little help from the late David Bowie on the track "This is not America". These three records, The Falcon and the Snowman Sound Track, Still Life Talking and Letter From Home epitomizes the PMG sound of the 80's. Then definitely head into the 90's. The PMG keeps the same core musicians of Metheny, Mays, Wertico, and Rodby but adds new musicians including a horn player. 1995's We Live Here is an awesome record. The follow up to that is 1997's "Imaginary Day" which is a bit of a departure from We Live Here sound, but still worthy of purchase especially, to hear Pat's insane 42 string Pikasso guitar! I was lucky enough to see the band live in 1997 paying on the pier in Seattle. When the song "Into The Dream" was played. Pat was on stage, just him in the spotlight the rest of the band in the shadows and he had this INSANE guitar in a stand with strings going every which way. Watching him play that insane Pikasso 42 string was worth the price of admission for that show! Anyway, check out PMGs catalog and of course dont forget Metheny's solo records like "Secret Story" from the 90's and his collaboration with another artists. Pat Metheny is an American treasure. His sound is unmistakable.
I'VE SEEN PAT AND THE GROUP...READY FOR THIS?? 38 TIMES SINCE "SECRETE STORY" IN JULY 1992. EVERY TIME HE COMES TO CALIFORNIA, I SEE HIM AT LEAST 2 TO 3 TIMES WITHIN STATE. LOVE HIS MUSIC I MUST SAY.
Fact check, Chris..the song we are hearing" Are You Going With Me" is from the album "Offramp" from 1981, not "Left Turn.". You seem to be a newcomer to the PMG. I first was moved by Pat in the 70's with the groundbreaking song, "Cross the Heartland". Might want to check it out...it's a prelim of what's to come. In my world, if you've never heard of Metheny... well, newcomers are always welcome.
+Daniel Caudy For me I had "Finding and Believing" in mind. 6:44 minutes of hectic, driving, beautiful cacophony representing our lives...then from there on it is like the beautiful wondrous afterlife we are all hoping for! Obviously, I think it is one of Pat Metheny's masterpieces!
@@rBennich yes, the version from Travels is the best, followed by the one with Ana Maria Jopek. But the Travels solo is like this wonderful build, with melodic references back to itself multiple times. It's perfection.
@@cecilcharlesofficial I think what i like most from the Travels solo is it's raw animalistic energy. Like, before they had played the song too many times for the inspiration to fade into known working themes and licks.
This song is filled with emotions, it has helped me get through and endure most of the worst times in my life. The tempo, the rise and explosive composition identifies with life time loses, loses of love and lives, trust and truths since 1993. Thanks for this song and the support it proves and bringing me out of feeling of defeat and less loved 😢LTC
Your music is beyond great.. Helps me escape... Pat first saw your group portland or....like 1976 maybe 1977...you were better than the main attraction...I was and will always be hooked....your music is the definition of jazz and takes me away....I have all your albums.... Lyle you will be missed...and Pat thank you. So much for some great music memories....Lyle forget Rip ....keep composing I want to hear your music when I see you up there...
It never cease to amaze me , how a tune could bring your soul , mind and body to a dimension of suggestions. This song being played on headphones and taking a stroll lets say in a city like LA (Downtown) passing people from all walks of life , the fortunate and unfortunate , seeing buildings , sites and etc . You sort of visualize and have in mind a different perspective of the way “Life” looks. Pat’s music is timeless. His works are all based on the concepts of the universe. Peace .
Since seeing the PMG once on German TV in the 1980th live at Onkel Pö´s in Hamburg I was infected by the PMG virus. This song is my all time favourite of them. Today I heard that Lyle passed away, I´m still shocked ... but glad that his music will last for ever here on yt , in the universe and in my heart! R.I.P. Lyle!
There are just no words for this group...only ethereal comes to mind, but it doesn't capture what/who they are or what their music evokes...glad I was alive to catch what they give....
Sharon Pegues the anticipation of their concerts was unbearable and the buzz lasted for weeks after...video is great, but being there was beyond belief
For someone who never had lyrics in their music (and I remember reading somewhere that he did not like lyrics-- "...it's all been said, hasn't it?...") Pat is - paradoxically - something of a poet. I have loved his music for decades, but I think its also worthy the mention that whenever I would read his interviews, I would hang on his every word... Could be the mid-western-my-handshake-is-my-bond kinda thing, or the fact that he's so straight-up-economic whenever he does speak openly? But I clearly remember listening to "Are You Going With Me" one evening back the early 80's and aside from enjoying both the overt and subtle beauty therein, I was also taken by the title: "Are You Going With Me?" Five short words (plus a question mark). As the track played, I was coaxed into considering any possible scenarios thereto--and there were several. Most related to one's fancying of another person; doting them; perhaps wanting them; needing them; seeking affirmation or affection or a COMMITMENT (*gasp*), etc... Regardless, it was then I swiftly realized what a wonderful poet he is... From that point forward, I have always taken my time to look into his song titles--and to no surprise, time and time again I've been smitten with them... Thank you, Pat.
also for me it was love at the very first listening: never heard before, from that moment it became the favorite soundtrack of my life! Hypnotic poetry

The first time I listened to this piece I cried. And then when it was ending, in my soul I said " oh no, don't leave me" As timeless as prayer. Miss you Lyle.......
My God, it good to be reminded of how great these musicians are, and how creative Metheney has always been, and how much it saddens me that Lyle Mayes is no longer with us. This is such a beautiful piece of music and conjures up some of my best memories from this time of my life. Thank you for posting this.
I was introduced to Pat Metheny via the 'Falcon and the Snowman' Soundtrack in 1985, which I bought because of David Bowie. Then I really got immersed in his talents courtesy of my college boyfriend in the mid to late 1980's. So many memories...so many emotions that can't be expressed. He does it for me.
There's nothing like listening to Pat Metheny anyway of the week . His music 🎶 🎵 is breath taking. Once you've heard it you want to hear all his music . You would like to just sit back and listen.
Pat's 9th symphony :-) This live recording gives the same apocalipse as the original Travels LP version.Lye Mays' intro improvization and Pedro Aznar's more present vocal makes it even more special. A very expressive interpretation of the original.
I've never heard a guitar sound quite like this. There's an intensity that almost feels alive. As though it must itself be a living, breathing organism-how could someone be channeling such a direct line of consciousness through their instrument?
Claude Brindamour I was there I was going through a bad time in my life on the verge of suicide that I heard this song when a young lady took me to that concert God bless her it was beautiful got me back on track
The sound of the Roland GR-300 can only be fully appreciated in person. When I heard Pat play it live in concert for the first time, I was floored. Even the best recordings don't do justice to it.
+Arnold Sherrill PEACE TO YOU BROTHER. ALTHOUGH WE ARE STRANGERS IN THE DISTANCE, WE ARE UNITED BY THE WONDERFUL SOUNDS OF THIS VERY SPECIAL AND UNIQUE MUSIC.
The first time I ever heard this song, I was traveling thru the high desert of Nevada, I had bought a cassette tape I think it was Offramp? I was kinda lost looking for a place to camp off the Alien highway it was winter I was in my FJ60, I kept rewinding to listen to this song over n over, it still gives me chills what a group.
This song holds a special place in my heart... I was 18 when we traveled to my families country of Brasil. I listened to it quite often then... I went there and it is and will always be the moment in time that I will cherish forever...
I saw Metheny perform the entire Off Ramp album without a break in summer of 1982 at Ravinia and I was sitting about 3 or 4th row right in front of Lyle Maze! They blew the audience away!
Eu posso dizer, sem dúvida nenhuma, que esta é a música da minha vida. Escuto isso a mais de trinta anos e cada vez me emociono. É como se cada frase falasse com o mais profundo de mim. Obrigado Pat Metheny.
This was the height of PMG, the late eighties to the end of the nineties, then Lyle's health begin to fail. He will be forever remembered as the heart of tis group.Pat was the composer, but Lyle was the heartbeat. RIP.
Lyle , Such a talented keyboard genius . He will be missed so much,, I remember seeing Pat iMatheny in 89 so happy I got to see the band with Lyle in it they were absolutely incredible mesmerising what a talent rest in peace Lyle you are one of the greatest keyboard geniuses.
*A trip into the ecstasy* Surely whoever said yes to *"Are you going with me?"* heartly knows it's worth the trip by far ... so far, even you don't know for sure where you went, not to say with other upcoming themes.
