As a young aspiring player, I rode my bicycle all over the city of Toronto in the 80s and Pat's music accompanied me on most of my journeys, seemingly eliminating my fatigue and giving me a sense of well being and spirtual uplifting that only God could surpass. I get misty with nostalgia over those times, his music fills my heart like no other. God bless Pat Metheny, Lyle Mays, Mark Egan, Steve Rodby, Nana Vasconselos, Paul Wertico, Jaco and all the others who contributed to this incredible body of work.
When I hear Last Train Home...it takes me back to my very young years. I was born in 1950, a poor, snotty nosed kid running around in a very small town in Kentucky. The steam engine coal powered trains would come through this little town often, belching the coal burning smoke as they passed by with their loads of coal from the nearby coal mines. The smoke smelled like the chimney smoke from most all the homes in the cold winter months, only much stronger, of course. Being poor, we lived next to the railroad tracks and every so often a passenger train would pass by at night and I would run out to watch it. I wondered about the rich people who were riding in those fancy cars, being warm and well fed going through the night. I would wonder where they were going? After a young life of poverty, I set my mind to becoming rich enough to have the clothes, the food and everything I wanted. So with hard work and determination I made it! And I too finally rode those trains, travelling through the night, going home. God Bless Pat Metheny and friends for giving me a childhood memory.
For me , the same , in the south east Wales . full of coal and very little education but , plenty imagination which, led me one happy day to Metheny .Praise the Lord !!!!!!!!!!!!!
@@mensahajanaku Yep. I live in central Kentucky. I want everyone to retain their negative opinions of here. I know it's selfish but...stay away. I want it to remain as it is. And, obviously, I am a long time Metheny fan.
Every time I hear Last Train it just brings back so many memories. I cannot think of a musician that comes up with these soul searching tunes. Also fond memories of Lyle Mays….. what a amazing musician, God rest his soul. Together Pat and Lyle created so many incredible pieces.
Absolutely, he has written the soundtrack to my life. All his songs are full of romance, intensity and fill me with an urge to travel. Soulful music at its best. Never tire of listening to,him
Yes sir. You and I are right there together on that! Great music can take you to those places in your mind, take you away from the world to that untouched corner of your mind and soul. God Bless you sir.
@@Phaedrus1961 Same here Peter. It's indescribable what music does to we fortunate souls. I'm a firm Believer in God and Jesus Christ/Yeshua, and I believe that music of this absolutely unique quality has to come from God, through those like Pat Metheny and given to us as a gift beyond explanation! God Bless you my friend.
These songs will always remind me of my brother and I traveling down the west coast of Costa Rica. My brother is dying of cancer now, but Pat's song will always bring great memories of my brother and C.R.
Sorry about your brother.. 😕 But music much like scent is a very powerful catalyst in extra vivid memory recall.. So I imagine it’s bittersweet hearing these songs. P.S.; I lived in San Jose CR back the early 2000’s.. I Studied traditional Latin/Afro-Cuban musical style & rhythm , simultaneously with a VERY rigorous University level classical intensive guitar program focused on percussive Flamenco playing. Honestly those were the best 6 years of my entire life for so many reasons!!
Simply one of the greatest, most adventurous, groundbreaking artists of our time. I am so appreciative my life parallel the time metheny and mays are making their incredible music. They form the soundtrack of my life. Many many thanks.
One of his best albums ever. You know how on some albums, you skip around to all the “good” tunes? Not Still Life (Talking). There isn’t one bad song, not one.
So you straightforwardly connect overcoming a terrible disease with the existence of a god?! The same god who invented / created / gave you that disease in the first place? Most absurd.
Thank you for your guitar and your playing , brilliant. Lyle died too young . He played keyboards awesome. To play with Pat he has a feel for the music like Pat with feeling.
Still life talking was my first CD of Metheny. I could not believe the sheer beauty of " In her family " and knew that it couldn't be a real drummer on Last train. I saw them at festival Hall London soon after and just could not believe what I saw. That drummer did Last Train and the whole set !! and as for Lyle Mays - what a terrible loss - he was beyond amazing.
When I hear this song, I feel I'm watching a time lapsed camera of a flower bloomin, sun set and sunrise, pure joy...what a master...makes me feel free
Every time I hear this great composition I'm reminded of summer of '68 watching Bobby Kennedy's funeral train traveling across the country to his resting place in Arlington. Thank you Pat and Lyle for so much inspiration! God Bless USA!
Can't stop listening to this music. And they make it look so easy, while it's beyond perfect. Saw Pat in may, it was great, but Lyle should play next to him forever. RIP Lyle
Minuano was the song I played during my university years when I had to let go of some steam and bring myself to another level to be completely relaxed afterwards. Of course, it was on full blast completely surrounded by the music!!
Steve Rodby left the band not long after this was recorded. He was the last of the original lineup other than Lyle Mays.. RIP… I was fortunate to see the original lineup back in 1995.. There was a certain vibe that Blamirez and Ledford brought that has never been duplicated.
I had the privilege to see Pat Metheny live twice already. I am very happy and thankful to the universe for that....2018 and 2022. But unfortunately I never could see the Pat Metheny Group live. Man, what a group! Astonishing! Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays are the Lennon/MacCartney of jazz. God bless music, the Pat Metheny group, and all the musicians that have been in it since the very beginning. Godspeed!
Lad ya missed a Unbelievably Talented group - Still Life was/is an amazing album - and I got to see them in NYC at Radio City - Nothing better than seeing a band in a great acoustical setting.
I have been listening to PMG since the seventies and have every one of his albums. Seen him many times and most recently in Barcelona, last summer. His music is timeless, Romantic and evokes the days of travel and adventure I have had in my life. Great driving music. All of these musicians are top notch.
Magnificent piece Pat you are God's gift to humanity your music touches the soul like no other and yes their are great jazz artist but you are my favorite since 1989 God bless you and your family always 🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿
Last train home awesome ,but without RIP Lyle, RIP Nana vascenselos, missed dearly master drummer Paul Vertico . it ain't the same . I have been following Pat since 1977 and honored to have witnessed PMG.
I had the pleasure to be at that 1989 outdoor concert to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Montreal Jazz Festival. What a show in front of a crowd evaluated at 100,000 people… He was coming every year since the creation of the festival. Such a musician and great music with his longtime partners the late Lyle Mays and Steve Rodby.
Who is the Latin guy at the back who plays percussion instruments, acoustic guitar and vocals? I'm so sorry that I have forgotten his name!!! My old vinyls are packed away. I understand that he also has passed away and Lyle Mays also. My God such gifts from God! PMG will always be a part of my life.
Valeu 👍
How many of you drummers out there think you can pull Train off. : ) So hard to call any of Pat and Lyle's stuff the "best" of their stuff, but Train and Minuano are certainly some of the best things that have ever been offered to we The lucky public. So grateful to have met Pat twice. RIP Lyle.
@@tonyr.4778 Honestly it could be either or both or neither (every chart I’ve ever seen is just 4/4 throughout). The time sig matters to most to whomever is writing/transcribing the chart (how they choose to count & notate it). However, I happen to agree with you but for different reasons. As a bassist/rhythm section member I immediately think; “fluctuating medium/up tempo straight 8ths, Meter is 4/4 with strong 3/2 Rumba clave”.. To me rhythmic accents relative to traditional Latin Afro/Cuban forms give me at least 90% of what I need to know, the reminder is my personal creative imprint..
This is one of the few (maybe the only) modern track(s) I know of that charted and used the electric sitar as the "main course" melodic instrument rather than sprinkled in like a spice on the entree.
Remember when the PMG was on world tour in the 90s and my family saw them in Detroit at the historical Fox Theatre in 1994. I’ll never forget how heavenly that tour performance was! I’ve been blessed to see Pat Metheny on tour performances since then with his other bands formed after 2010. The Pat Metheny Unity Band, and on. Had the pleasure of meeting him during his first Detroit Jazz Festival performance, then seeing Pat twice again at Detroit Jazz Fest, and then several times in Michigan for tour performances over the years.
520 years later, 12 October, 2022, in Lima , Peru, Pat Metheny might seem to catch a minute piece of the essence of that day in 1492, with "Slip Away". Thank you, Pat.
Hello! We are from Ukraine. We are a children's art studio "Moon Cat", we give children joy. Perhaps you or your friends have an old guitar that you don't need, we would be grateful if you donate this guitar to us. Best regards, Moon Cat Children's Art Studio.
I believe this may have been from the last The Way Up concert at the Montreal Jazz Festival. Unfortunately really the last real full PMG lineup. They did a brief songbook tour as a four piece, but this - as one of their very favourite venues, was a fitting swan song 😊
Anyone know anything about his electric sitar? Is it an original Danelectro Vincent Bell Coral Sitar? It looks like it to me. I notice there is no lower pickguard, and there are a couple mini switches installed that must be custom as I haven't seen those on any of the originals or various copies. It also kind of looks like he might have put different pickups in, as they almost look like exposed pole piece single coils, (sort of strat or telecaster like) but that may just be light reflecting off the lipstick covers. It's a little hard to tell with the low resolution. It sounds great and has a nice twang while still being warmer than most of these seem to sound.
