At 1:00 Pat Riley’s shot is blocked by Phil Jackson. Sign of things to come when when facing Phil and Jordan Bulls as Knick/Heat head coach during the 90’s.
As a player, he started out the championship season way down on the bench behind Flynn Robinson (starter an all-star for other teams). Riley beat him out for the #3 guard position with defense and great screens.
C'mon Lakers Nation. Get the facts straight. Pat Riley did NOT start the 81-82 season as the Lakers color man to Chick Hearn. He started the 79-80 season that way. When head coach Jack McKinney had a tragic bike accident and was incapacitated about 6 games into the season, assistant coach Paul Westhead became interim head coach and hired Riley to be an assistant.
His rap in "Just Say No!" My name is Pat, I'm the coach of the team They say my plays really do the thing. So I'm here to tell you the best play of all, is say no to drugs cuz life is a ball. B-b-b-b-b-all!
1:35 Being a Philly native, I remember the games between the Lakers & the Sixers. My family & I would go nuts during the games. On another note... my Mom, my older sister & I thought that Pat Riley was hot. That slicked back black hair & that suit... DAMN! (I love a good looking man in a suit.) LOL! :D
Greatest coach that ever lived IMO. I turned on when i was growing up not to see if the Lakers would win but by how much. Being a 80's kid was the greatest!!
Remember against Boston late in a Finals game he emphatically gave the "fist" signal which meant the rock was going to Kareem. He did it for all to see, a signal that Boston was helpless to stop Kareem. Of course Kareem swished the ball through the net with his unstoppable sky hook and the Lakers won the game.
His Greatest moment as Lakers coach was the trophy presentation in 1985 saying The rebounding improved Kareem our captain and Magic our two leaders led us we have a saying that somewhere along at some time were plant our feet stand firm and make a point We took that parque floor and all the skeletons are cleaned out of our cot and losing game 5 in 1982 facing the music
If we hadn't lost Magic and Byron Scott for the NBA finals, the Lakers would likely have won again and been the first team to three-peat. The Lakers swept through the playoffs without losing a game. Byron blew his hamstring in practice, prior to the series beginning. Magic did the same thing in early in the first game.
Patrick Shaw I was alive back then. Seen it all too. I fully agree, The 1989 Lakers were one of the best teams ever. They faced the Seattle Supersonics and was down 29 points, only to come back and win it. Not to mention the fact that they didn't lose a game in the playoffs. If Magic and Byron had not been injured, they would have took those detoilet punks again. That was one thing I never got about detoilet, they called themselves "Bad boys" but they acted like punks. Dirtiest playing bastards I ever seen.
+DoubleVisionandco Magic tore his hamstring because of all the pressure he was under. If he could have handled the pressure physically he wouldn't have cracked. Also, they would have lost to detroit the year before had Isaiah not banged up his ankle. If you want to play the injury card then they failed to even get 2 in a row.
