Behold the "speedster" of the Patek Philippe sports watch family. The Patek Philippe Aquanaut 5167 sports model reads like the "Speedster" models occasionally offered to Porsche's best clientele; stripped down, all action, and blessed with serious performance potential.
Unencumbered by the somewhat patrician hauteur of the Patek Philippe Nautilus, the more modern 40mm stainless steel Aquanaut is a vigorous alternative with every refinement of its older stablemate.
First launched in 1997 as the first Patek Philippe equipped with a rubber strap, the Aquanaut caused both a scandal and a sensation on its debut. For 2007, this Patek Philippe Aquanaut 5167 shown here was released as a tenth-anniversary upgrade of its increasingly iconic bad-boy sports model.
Improvements include a less crowded dial, a more refined "geosphere" guilloche pattern on the dial base, a date that moves outboard to supplant the numeral "three," and a new strap with enhanced texture, and a more elegant skeletonized twin-trigger clasp.
While the case and bezel of the Aquanaut exhibit inescapable family resemblance to the seminal Nautilus, the 5167 is very much its own watch. Far less massive than the modern 5712, the Aquanaut wears with a delightful lightness that rivals the finest ultra thin dress models.
Only 8.5mm thick and 46.5mm from lug to lug, the Aquanaut 5167 is the ultimate Patek Philippe sports watch for those with smaller wrists or a taste for elegant packaging. Needless to say, the black-and-steel color palette of the Aquanaut combine with its svelte profile to create the ultimate dual-mode work/play workhorse.
And don't be afraid to get wet and wild with the Patek Philippe Aquanaut. Any watch with "Aqua" in its name should be ready to take the plunge, and the 5167 delivers; 120m/400ft water resistance is on call when needed. The free-slung Patek Philippe Gyromax balance ensures timing stability when the going gets rough. And the outstanding Patek Philippe natural rubber strap features generous inner relief channels to prevent sweat, heat, and grit from becoming trapped during vigorous activities.
More than a timekeeper, the Patek Philippe caliber 324 SC is a masterpiece in its own right. This example features the newer Patek Philippe seal, and the standard of finish gives the old Geneva Hallmark a breathless run for its money. It's appealing to the eye, but a loupe is required to inspire awe; this movement holds up when subjected to ruthless scrutiny. Only 3.3mm thick, entirely hand-made and hand finished, and blessed with a vast display case back, the caliber 324 SC is proof that Patek Philippe's "bad boy" sports watch has a heart of gold.

When I first saw this watch, I didn't like it at all. Not really sure why, but now it's one of my favorites. I want one of these.

Another great review, Tim. What's so impressive about your videos is that you are able to remain articulate in what appears to be one take without any umms and aahhs which is so common in other watch reviews. I don't know if it's scripted or not, but if it isn't it's even more impressive. Keep up the good work.

Clearly the best video on RU-vid in regards to the 5167... Nicely done!

+slashd0t Hi slashd0t, and thank you for your kind words! I always try to make the showcase video that I'd want to watch, so I keep the bluster about money and image to a minimum. The mechanics, artisanal substance, history, and role of the watch within its brand catalog are what interest me most, and I think thats what viewers are seeking. Best, Tim

Excellent review as always Tim. I love the Aquanaut's versatility, it's one of those watches that look good with just about anything.

+Michael Anderson Hi Michael, thank you! I respect the history and heritage of the Nautilus, but the Aquanaut feels like a more versatile machine. It has no pretense, no baggage, and nothing to prove. The substance is there for those who know, and the profile is low to avoid gawking. Best, Tim

I prefer the trigger deployant (not friction fit) and black dial option of the Aquanaut vs. the Nautilus.

Nice vid! I'm thinking about getting my first PP, the 5167A and deciding if I want to plunk down that kind cash or not. If so, I'll be going pre-owned. I found a full set with purchase date on the papers 8/2015 at a good price. These seem liquid and like cash in the bank at the right price.

I'll be viewing one next week sometime. Was wandering in advance if the rubber strap wraps around the wrist sufficiently near the base of the lugs. It looked as if even with the clasp closed, the watch would have a tendency to 'hover' if that makes sense...

A cheaper high class alternative would be a Reverso but it is a very desirable sports watch.

This PP movement does not hack right?
@the1916company
@the1916company 9 лет назад
+Javier Sandoval Correct. For some reason, this is a *very* uncommon feature in PP calibers. I could be mistaken, but I believe that the first non-chronograph PP caliber to receive a hacking feature was the 5235 regulator with a variant of the 240 micro-rotor automatic (first shown in 2011, first delivered in 2013). Best, Tim

Thanks for the video! Very clearly and nicely done. Could you please explain your view when comparing the Patek Philippe Aquanaut 5167 (or even the 5164) with the IWC Portuguese Yacht Club Chronograph? In terms of manufacture and value/depreciation, as visual differences are obvious.. Thanks!!
@the1916company
@the1916company 9 лет назад
+Eddard sn Hi Eddard sn, welcome to our channel. Honestly, there is no comparison between the two. I believe that IWC delivers a superb product that punches above its weight for the price that's charged. The engineered content and complicated watchmaking of the IWC have no rival in the 5167. It's a versatile dress/sports watch with a flyback chronograph, a long power reserve, and a sophisticated in-house automatic movement. However, Patek Philippe pares down the 5167's complexity specifically to deliver aesthetics that impress at the macro level and astound at the micro level. Under a loupe, the 5167 rises to the reputation of its maker, and that's worth the price of admission by itself. From a practical standpoint, the 5167 also offers far more water resistance and can be used for swimming (the Yacht Club cannot). In terms of resale value, you will lose a larger percentage with the IWC, but the 5167 will lose a larger amount in absolute terms. In other words, the Patek will cost you more real dollars if you chose to buy new and then sell. My advice for avoiding depreciation is to buy a good pre-owned example of either watch from a collector you can meet personally or an established pre-owned dealer that offers a no-questions asked return policy if you are not satisfied. The inherent advantage of luxury watches compared to cars, for example, is that the car continues to depreciate until its value is that of scrap, but a luxury watch takes a fairly consistent 30-55% hit (brand-dependent) before stabilizing at a reliably consistent pre-owned price. Some even appreciate in the long-term, but they're best bought and enjoyed for pleasure. Learn the market for used/preowned examples of the references you enjoy the most, research the sellers, and pull the trigger when you find the watch that you feel best suits your tastes. Best, Tim

Money depreciates over time as well in that it loses its value. Anywhere from 2 to 4% per year. Money has devalued by 97% in America over the last 60 years. So a good watch will hold its relative value better than money.

He says that it is unpretentious...but Patek is all about being pretentious...that is why a simple watch with a rubber strap costs about 20 grand. I also think that the rubber strap would not be the best for formal occasions...unless just being really expensive makes is appropriate for every occasion.

No. Patek is very understated. Very few people know who they are. The are generally not loud and brash. Pretentious they are not.
