Reviewing The Patek Philippe Nautilus And Aquanaut: Preowned Watches From The Best Watch Brands

The Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711 will be discontinued after 2021, but its upscale cousin, the 5712, remains a staple of Patek’s sports watch portfolio. While the 5711 includes only a date complication, the 5712 includes a pointer date, a power reserve indicator, and a moonphase display. For good measure, the Nautilus Moonphase also includes Patek’s premium micro-rotor automatic caliber 240 rather than the standard watch’s 324 center rotor.
From bezel to clasp, the Nautilus 5712 exhibits the winning style that designer Gerald Genta coined for the first Nautilus 3700 in 1976. Extensive hand-finishing adds value and beauty to the exterior of the Nautilus, and a considerable portion of the production cost of the watch is tied to the time spent polishing, satin brushing, and shaping steel components.
While the Nautilus is senior in the collection, the newer Patek Philippe Aquanaut sports watch boasts youthful vigor and equal quality. At 40.8mm, the 5167/1A is slightly larger than the 5712 but also slightly thinner at 8.5mm to 8.8mm. This example of the Patek Aquanaut includes a rarely seen stainless steel bracelet; most Aquanauts include a rubber bracelet. The result is a more forceful and premium appearance than a standard 5167A.
As with the Nautilus, the Aquanaut includes a dial with gradient color transitions. The center of the “geosphere” dial includes a dark silver sunburst pattern that fades to black at the outer edge of the dials. Hands and numerals are crafted from 18-karat white gold, and Super Luminova is used in liberal quantities. Below the dial, a hand crafted Patek Philippe caliber 324 automatic movement provides 45 hours of power reserve and is protected against water intrusion to 120 meters.
