Patek Philippe Calatrava Ref. 5227R-001 Watch Review

Soooo....39mm case diameter? That’s pretty sweet! I keep hearing it’s 38mm then 38.5mm but I trust this guy. He knows what he’s talking about. And I’ve been pining away for a 5227G-010 forever now; it’s a lot more reasonably priced than my grail (AP Royal Oak in solid 18K yellow gold) and as much as I love the Royal Oak dial (absolutely next level) there’s NOTHING quite like a blacked out white gold Patek with a black strap, BLACK DIAL and white gold indices. If only it didn’t have a date complication or seconds hand - which would effectively make it the highest status, stealthiest, top-out-of-sight class watch ever - it would be flawless. The perfect dress watch for those with impeccable taste who prefer understated elegance. Either way, THIS is THE watch as far as I’m concerned. To think how desperately I wanted a PP World Time (and still do) but then realized just how much better this reference is in so many ways by comparison.

For me personally this is the best looking dress watch from Patek. However, nothing beats Breguet Classique 7147 in rose gold.

Been looking for this piece for the past couple of years. Simply gorgeous.

For me, this beautiful unit, and the Rolex Day Date blue ice dial in platinum with president bracelet and smooth bezel are the two definitive dress watches.

Immaculate, is quite honestly the only word that comes to mind when describing Patek Philippe.

Great review Tim, keep them coming. I know that is a Calatrava, but I can't help but feel like it is a bit naked without the hobnail bezel. I hope that one day, the 3919 white gold Calatrava will one day be in my collection.

1 mm too big, rear crystal should have ar coating, the date window isn't great, the colour should match the dial. Lange saxonia thin 37mm would be a better option.

Why on Earth did Patek have to put a hinged caseback on this otherwise beautiful watch? If you look at photos from the left side where the hinge can be seen as part of the case, it's not a pretty sight. Also, the hour hand is too short. Preowned prices reflect this. There's little difference between a 5227 and a 5296 for example, despite the fact the 5227 costs a lot more at the AD. The half hunter caseback is a gimmick in a wrist watch, as opposed to a pocket watch, IMHO.

Beautiful, elegant a classic but. The sad part of this is the fact that with the iPhone makes no sense to wear a watch anymore.
