I found your videos when I was researching how to go about cleaning up a koi pond this summer to make it easy to maintain. I have learned LOADS from watching you !! I so appreciate you don't hide any steps and share your knowledge and personal tips so a true DIY'er like myself can get great end results the first time. In watching these bog videos I was so impressed with how much of an "artist" that you truly are!! You not only have educated and inspired me but you have also shown me that I am not the only person out here who's bent in life is to create things that are balanced and symmetrical. love love love your contributions here so much!!
watching all this series and loving them. I do not have the kind of temp. here on the Oregon coast so will have different plants, but will research which will do best. My bog is a hundred gallon Rubbermaid stock tank, going into my three hundred stock tank, anxious to get going on it thanks to your wonderful videos.
Hi Eric. Love your videos! Its really cool how you answer everyone's questions. I just bought a house and plan on installing a pond next spring or summer. I can't wait to apply what I learned from watching your videos. Thanks for the awesome videos, cant wait for more.
Hello ponddigger Thanks for sharing this great setup, I've been fighting with algae since I built the pond now thanks to you everything is spot on, no more algae no more head ache:) . What should I do with the filter during the winter when temperatures are below 0?
We don't really have any pond stores here in VA so I have to rely on places that sell non pond plants and adapt them .There is 1 place that sells pond plants and they are very limited in there stuff ,so I clean the plants really good .I have been watching your video's for years now .My pond is 11 years old and still the original fish plus some babies I have given away to fellow ponds .Your video's give me some great ideas .Thank you
hi Eric I have a quick question how long did it take for the water to start clearing up after you put the gravel in and plants couple of days? Thanks Billy for Boston
This filter is similar to a sand and gravel filter, is there any maintenance like the air blow out required like the sand and gravel? Or will the plants use all the waste and make more plants, just requiring just thinning out the plants?
The uv clarifier has been the very best investment we have made with our pond. In 2 days it took our pond from pea green to crystal clear. now we run the clarifier one day a week to maintain clear water. Koi Pond build UV Clarifier and filtration
I'm using a large round pot for some elephant ears as my filter. Going to make a circle out of pvc pipe so the water drips all around the pot. Do u put the drain in the bottom of my pot?
No Terje the water lilies with large pads are all tropical. You can grow them each summer and remove them each year before the cold temps hit you. They tropical lily bulb can be stored in moss in your house over the winter!
Love your videos Eric! Its inspired me to build a similar design in a long below ground planter I have near our entryway. Will be about 400 gallons. My 12 year old son loves fish, frogs, plants, etc so he is going to have fun. Question for you. I'd like to have just a simple wide spillway (waterfall). I'm thinking that if I have it this way, it makes the other exit pipes (emergency and main that is under water level) unnecessary. Do you agree? There should not be a reason to have an emergency outlet with a wide main spillway? Also, what size pump did you use on this project? Thank you!
John Funk Yes a wide spillway would make it so you do not need the emergency overflow. In this feature we used a little mag drive 600 gph pump. Thanks for watching!
Hi Eric... That type of water lilys, What level of temperatures does they take? In my pond I get like 22-23*C at moust in summer, and 5*C by the winter. Should it be possible to make those lillys to grow with my temperatures? If not....Do you know other lillys with big leafes like this, that survive in the temperatures I have?
Hi there, is this as effective or better than a multi bay vortex filter and bead filter? what size bog would be required for a 2800 gal pond with about 30 koi stocked? really like this concept. great videos as always thanks ☺
+Matthew Cook This is a very different filtration approach then vortex filters and bead filters. Bog filtration done correctly is EXTREMELY effective and provide killer results! 30 Koi is overstocked for a 2800 gallon pond. When they are full grown they will barely fit. Keep that in mind. I would suggest a bog area approximately 6' x 8' for your 2800 gallon pond.
Hello Pond Digger, I have a 150 gl pond, I love the bog filter, how do you do maintenance on it and from what I can tell is that you have to disassemble the bog to clean it?
I have alittle bit problem, when planting the plant i trim roots and clear and remove total the roots until the dirt completely removed, then my plant leafes turn out yellow, some of them dying, the others survive, how to solve this ? i dont want to make my pond dirty
some plants have to have soil to survive. Research the plant needs when choosing them for your pond. In a different video Eric showed how to use some underlayment material place the plant with dirt in it and wrap the fabric around the around the roots and dirt tucking it in much like swaddling a baby and placing it in the water. You have a plant the can thrive and not get the water all dirty or let the roots escape and take over your pond. A win win win scenario.
+Terry Emetic We use a local grower for our aquatic plants. Call my friend Kelly Billing from Maryland Aquatics Nursery. She can take care of you. Tell her The Pond Digger sent you!
Good to hear that it can be done For a 3ft tank what would be the size of the bog filter and what type of indoor plants or herbs can I plant in it. Thanks
+Tr Gaming Good question. I suppose it really depends on what time of the year it is and what climate you live in. The water plants that you can eat are Taro, Water Mint, Cattails, and water cress. Hope that helps. FYI, My wife and I do have an affinity for zombie culture. Thanks for watching!
Technically yes. The obstacles you'd face that Eric isn't here is that you'd have to decide what you're going to do in the winter. Drain the pawn? Or try to heat it. I can tell you with no protection from the ground around it being elevated, it'll be hard not to have that thing freeze solid like a rock. What would you do with fish if you put some in? Plus Eric used a lot of tropicals. You might be better off using hardy water plants.
I rinse all my roots off and even dip them in peroxide and water .I don't want any bad stuff from the nursery going into my pond and harming my fish .I did get a laugh at you with the little balls on the roots of the penny wort
I'm always laughing at myself! It's a good plan to clean up all your plants before adding them to the pond. All the plants used in this presentation were grown at our facility or at a specialty aquatic plant grower so I wasn't worried about impurities hitting our demonstration pond. BUT that would have been a nice thing to cover in this video incase you picked up a few aquatic plants from a big box store. Often times they are loaded with nasty fertilizers!
not just nasty stuff but i must have gotten fish eggs in the 2 plants I got here for my stock tank because I found fish in there 3 weeks after I put the plants in it .I know they were not there before that because I had just filled it with fresh water from my well the day before .The stock tank is 300 gallons and since it was just going to be plants i did not worry about cleaning them .By the way love your new video's .I now have 6 baby fish that I am not sure what they as they are so tiny .Not sure how long eggs survive in plants .They are not tadpoles
Ya the water lily was a bit large for the pond. For the sake of visual effect and FUN we went for it. We will likely change it out next year when the water starts to warm up. Thanks for your feedback!
