Pat, your videos are head and shoulders above any other Thai-based 'Tuber. The camera work and editing are superb. Your commentary is thoughtful and intelligent. There has been a steady improvement of your presentations over time. I am grateful that you take the time and effort to present such a varied palette of Bangkok videos. There are many u-tubers on RU-vid who are showing different areas of Bangkok on a regular basis, unfortunately they fail to give any useful information about that area. But you are not one of those, you make your videos with a different approach, it is research based, highly informative and entertaining. That is the reason I respect you and your efforts and watch your vlogs regularly. I believe that In the future your vlogs will be considered as the most authentic historical and visual documents of Bangkok, and for this, people of Bangkok should be thankful to you.

It's ashame the latest generation of tourists that visit the night-life areas of Soii Cowboy and Nana don't appreciate Patpongs history, I still get chills running down my spine everytime I watch Christopher Walkens walking down a crowded Patpong Rd and into the Mississippi Queen in the the Deer Hunter
@BangkokPat
@BangkokPat 2 года назад
I agree, but Patpong had a bit of a dodgy reputation, one which scared people away from the relatively sane Nana or Cowboy. It could bounce back, and reinvent itself as a high end dining and drinking area, but that is asking a lot.

@@BangkokPat you got that right, in a dozen trips since 2007 I've never been. Heard how they suck you in at the upstairs places, present you with a huge lie of a bill and then a gang won't let you down the stairs until you pay. I did meet a guy who got SO steamed by this that he stood in the street in front of the place and loudly told anyone around how they would rip you off. Did not take them long to come down, stuff his money in his hand and tell him to piss off haha. Hopefully I'll get to Bkk a time or two again, before I expire, I'll check it out then, first to the museum. Does Patpong museum serve drinks? :)

Spent allot of time on Patpong road in 1973/74, in 73 the place was just unbelievable with the GI’s and the absolute prettiest women on the planet. In late 74 different vibe as the USA was pulling out of Vietnam and the Thai’s were very concerned about their future. In 79/80 spent most of my time at the Super Star bar those were the best of times for a 24yr old, hope to go back soon but just for the great food.

Thank you Pat for a priceless video. Anyone wondering about the origins of Patpong will find the video both educational and absorbing. A must watch. Whenever I visited Bangkok, I always made time to head to Mizu’s for a dinner. There may have been Japanese food on the menu, but for me it was usually the saba fish on a sizzling hot plate or the occasional black pepper steak. I always brought my own bottle of JW Black Label and paid only for the Singha soda water mix. The Japanese owner who was himself the cashier, also operated a mini compo stereo system from which he played a continuous selection of jazz classics - no other music besides cool jazz. When the owner became invalid, his significant half managed the restaurant till it finally shuttered about 3 years ago. Regulars ignored the many cockroaches thar ran over the floors and walls. Sui generis, Mizu’s. Sadly missed.

Hi Pat, Thanks a lot for this. I actually visited the museum last week and it was amazing, thoroughly recommended. My guide, an American guy, owned the Strip Bar apparently. When I was walking through the spectacular 'Grand Prix' bar, there was a guy asleep in there, which turned out to be Sucky! As you show, he's a real character and we had a laugh together at the end with the other staff as well. Bought a cool Mississippi Queen T-shirt in there too. I hope this excellent museum can ironically bring the faded Patpong area back to light. Cheers mate!

Thank you Pat! Your videos have a feel like no other Thailand / BKK videos on RU-vid. The atmosphere you create through photos, music, carefully selected shots and narration is so engaging and compelling. Every video is such a pleasure to watch. I love hearing about the infrastructure, the people and the history. Love the shots of beautiful but old buildings and the gorgeous streetscape. The only thing close is the back streets of Tokyo. I was relieved to hear that there’s no danger of Patpong being sold off to developers. I hope it’s true and the neighborhood will live on for many years to come. There seems to be an endless well of history in Bangkok to draw from, but please don’t feel like you need to make a masterpiece every single time. I’m happy to watch a video of you walking around and petting cats too, haha.

@@BangkokPat Yes Pat you sure are right. One can feel that now you know Patpong very well and you would be the best possible guide to show the area and tell about it's past until present time. I had to watch your video once more which I rarely do otherwise. Michael Messner from the Patpongmuseum seems to be is a Swiss national i bet. He has a great knowledge about Patpong, the past of the place and how it all started, the connection with the secret service, the superstars David Bowie, Van Damme, Alice Cooper and so on. These and many more are all aspects of patpong that i didn't know about and that are very interesting When talking about musicians one song comes to my mind also connected to Bangkok and Patpong. This popsong giving a glimpse of the multi-diverse faces of this amacing city: It's a song by Britisch singer Murrey Head dating from the year 1984 "One Night in Bangkok" That song was played all over in Bangkok and I can still hear the music and the lyrics of the song: "Bangkok, Oriental Setting / And the city don't know that the city is getting / The creme de la creme of the chess world in a Show with everything but Yul Brinner .... and the refrain goes: ... / One Night in Bangkok and the worlds your oyster / The bars are temples but the pearls ain't free / You'll find a god in every cloister / And if you're lucky the god's a she / I can feel an angel sliding up to me. .... and so on. Those are great memories me being young in my early twenties about to discover this world on a shoustring and i think it was my second time in this amazing city that has to offer so much and never sleaps. Thank you Pat for connecting the dots!

Fantastic explanation of the evolution of Patpong. One thing that I thought was missing was the night bizarre which was very much part of Patpong and used to be (very noisily) set up every day at 4pm and would sell a lot of tourist merchandise in the night time then were taken apart again in the early hours of the morning. I am an expat and have lived in Bangkok for 17 years, many years ago I had a special 'friend' who did the day shift in one of the bars, she clocked off at 7pm so as long as I took her to the food court in the multi story carpark near Foodland she would usually come back with me to my apartment in Bangkae for free (never paid any bar fines as I would leave before closing time and discreetly wait for her.) Last year I was working in Silom and visited Patpong, during the day I made a video of the current locations where the Deerhunter shots were made and later replayed the movie. Great feelings of nostalgia.

Pat, You always deliver a top notch product. I haven’t visited Thailand since the late 90s but will certainly look you up to share some great food and beverage. My wife and I can’t wait to visit again.

Always avoided places like Patpong and Nana but after watching this now I want to visit the museum there. I almost came to Thailand as early as 1984 because for a short time my sister was missing in Bangkok. Thinking back now I am glad I did not I was not ready for Thailand. David Bowie what a legend miss him. Really enjoyed this Pat excellent show as always.

(Contd) a bit of a rip-off, but also a museum piece. I loved the old places like Crown Royal, Madrid, Thai Room, Cosmos etc. These days with Bouchon closed, French Kiss in Patpong 2 is about the only place to eat - and that’s about it! Oh well…

My first red light district that I visited on my first trip to Thailand back in 2000 was an eye opener being by myself and in my early 20s. Good times tho all part of traveling. Another great video Pat I love learning about the areas that i've been too. Take care Pat and all the very best for 2022 mate

Happy New Year Pat!!! Hope you had good one. Firstly, your new microphone works really well, voices are crisp and loud. And secondly, though “table tennis” isn’t my cup of tea, I quite enjoyed your presentation of Patpong’s history. I’ve never visited but will definitely add it and the Patpong Museum to my to-go list next time I’m in the city. Hope I get Sucky.

Thanks Liro, that mic is actually what I've use all the time, normally I have my mic plugged into it and it's hidden in my back pocket. I did used to use 2 mic for chats but I find it's easier to just hold that, as the built in mics are very good quality! Happy New Year to you to! Let's hope 2022 is better than the last 2....

Pat, i watched the shorter video, last week and enjoyed that, but i must say found this longer one more informative and enjoyable. having been to Bkk many times over the years i never went to Pat Pong not my thing, but i wish i had gone to see it in its hay day when i was first there in 1990.

Patpong wasn't my thing either, always sounded too dodgy, I had a few drinks with friends once, been to Silom Soi 4, Noriega's but that's not Patpong really. This video was a bit more comprehensive, on Thaiger I like to keep them under 12 minutes!
