Also the black Philip show was because opie encouraged it. He also wanted patrice to write a book but he didn't live long enough to write it. Opie, whether you like it or not is responsible for a lot of the content. He encouraged others a great deal.

The car accident happened in Santee, San Diego, CA. The driver was a police officer, and the incident was not an accident. He purposely killed himself and his whole family. That freeway ends right there. It is NOT a 4-way intersection. They crashed head-on into an embankment, dying on impact. It turned out the fault was with the floor mat causing the pedal to stick. That would be horrifying, seeing a busy junction, and not being able to stop.
To their point though - you can pop a car into neutral (stops acc despite pedal being down) and turn the key off, which would have stopped the car (even if it had to coast to a stop).

Yeah they could have gotten out of it as well. That car was a rental and the previous renter had a similar thing happen to him but he knew what to do, he also reported the problem to the car rental company when returning it, and correctly guessed it was probably the floor mat. The car rental place did nothing about it.
I just realized, all these shows are essentially best of Opie. Because Patrice really helps moderate his mood. He’s mostly in good spirits with him. That happened to me once… one of the engine hoses got lose and it got stuck under the accelerator. I hit all brakes and got on the side of the road… still going. It came to me to turn off the car

Put it in neutral so you don't lose power steering and pull the emergency brake. If it's an automatic, neutral doesn't lock out when the car is in drive, so you CAN shift without pressing the brake. The situation is sad, but it could have been resolved without people dying.
phanatic215 Hindsight is always 20/20, it's easy to say what they should or shouldn't of done now, but when you're in that situation it's a lot harder to not be shitting yourself as you think you're about to kill your wife and child.

I have been in a similar situation before (turbo got stuck open on a work truck). It's not as simple as just turning it off, as that doesn't cut the fuel flow when the entire problem is the fuel regulation not working/responding.
You experienced a diesel runaway. You were burning oil, not fuel at that point. For that, you need to cover the intake. The Toyota's ran on gasoline. For that, all you have to do is stop the spark, which can be done easily by turning the key to the off position. Ant was 100% correct.
That's probably a better method. Since you would get to keep your power steering and brake booster for a while that way. Though it might be a bit tricky to shift out of gear if you're at full throttle.
