Pattaya's Story:
Pattaya was a fishing village until the 1960s. Tourism began during the Vietnam War, when American servicemen began arriving on R&R. One large group who arrived from a base in Korat on 29 June 1959 and rented houses from Phraya Sunthorn at the south end of the beach, on what is now known as the "Strip", are credited with recommending Pattaya, whose fame spread by word of mouth.
It was at the time of the Vietnam War that Pattaya really started to develop a reputation as a place where you could relax and enjoy life. This was at the end of the late 1950’s and the early 1960’s, when US GI’s would frequent the same place in what these days, would be known as Walking Street.
In 1965, the first major hotel opened in Pattaya, the Nipa Lodge which is now the Basaya Beach Hotel and Resort.
In 1967, the Royal Thai Navy base at U-Tapao allowed to first US aircraft to fly from the airport to take part in active service in the operations over Vietnam. Pattaya became the most obvious place for US troops to hang out during their R&R and the small village as it was back then, was now starting to see rapid growth and a rise in popularity. Pattaya had become so popular by this time that the US military organised flights from Saigon to Bangkok so that US servicemen could recuperate. It is believed that 6,000 troops would come for five days every month. The notion of a Fun City had well and truly begun.
Wat Phra Yai - The Temple, built in the 1940's when Pattaya was a small fishing village. Wat Phra Yai contains the largest Buddha image statue in the region at 18 meters in height, and this statue was constructed in the 1970's.
This particular 18-metres-tall statue of the Buddha sits atop Pratumnak Hill, towards the southern end of the town. A long stairway flanked by two golden colored Naga snakes leads to the Buddha image, that was constructed in 1977. The enormous golden colored Buddha image is officially named Phra Buddha Sukhothai Walai Chonlathan, and is also known as Luang Pho Yai.
