I have a black Patterdale Terrier he is a rescue dog and had the most amazing personality. I can't imagine life without him...oh yes I remember it was peaceful.
I also have a black Patterdale rescue dog - and she is my Princess - amazing personality! But correctly I have to stimulate her and should not be a first time dog - otherwise the dog will go nuts and the owner will not understand why
I had a black patterdale he was my best friend. I had a very strong connection with him, he had a great personality, he would drag me around using my nappie as I was laughing when I was a toddler, he died when he was a month off 18. He kept me going through everything bad! He was so obedient and loving and caring and a fabulous dog, I wouldn't be here today if I didn't have him by my side. His name was bodger. I remember when I was 7 and there was a rat in my room a big one that was trying to climb up on my bed I screamed and in rushed bodger grabbing the rat and killing it without hesitation! I was sad for the rat but amazed! One of my best memories of him.
I've only met one patterdale in my life but she made a real impression. Her name is Izzy. Bc she was a small dog, lots of ppl came into our shelter wanting to adopt her, but we knew she needed a special person and we were very careful who she went to. I really liked her.
I've owned my Patterdale for 12 years and you've totally nailed it. Everything you say is sound advice. Mine was bred direct from good English hunting stock and is the canine Chuck Norris.......like you said "Not for the faint hearted!"
gamebred26 when my patter-dale/jack Russel cross was a puppy she decided to eat the wall in the kitchen she grew out of it though but occasionally likes to destroy her bed and pull all the stuffing out 😂
I crated my Patterdale as a pup. She is now 7 and has not been crated for a long time, she has not destroyed any of our property, but she has a very strong prey drive and was used to hunt from around 2 year old
Brilliant dogs. I have one called "Ted" and have trained many, one thing to mention is they are never satisfied. They are always searching for the next thing but never quite finding it. Easy dogs to train and no need for a heavy hand, use food and toys and train through motivation. They will challenge you, so you just need to be patient and consistent and it'll get easier.
My first hunting duo was a female "parson" russel and a black and tan male patterdale, yin and yang, they kept everything nice and vermin free, both were well trained and loved to cuddle, they were so much alike, size and temperament. NOT for the faint hearted for sure, squirrels, moles, mice, raccoons, groundhogs, rabbits and even skunk. Expect anything here. They live long if you protect them from themselves, supervision is a must! Both lived to a little over 17, and were six months apart, equally easy to train.. Good in the house, no "potty" issues. They never were crated, or treated like "babies" never do that to either breed, they are working dogs. Get the proven working strains if you expect workers, I've heard of many bad breeders are not keeping this tradition, especially the russel breeders. The later years were very mellow, sweet affectionate old folks. They love games too, and will invent them if you don't. Need training, it's very important to both breeds, they enjoy it, and ask to train or play. Good for grain farms and around horses and geese. Okay with respectful older children, however we didn't have any living with us. Watch their teeth and paws, they may injure them on fences or wood to get to vermin. Check them over well daily for cuts and bites, and fine tooth comb for fleas and ticks. Keep first aid on hand! *No One has mentioned this in any of your patterdale videos*, and they again are WORKING dogs to the core. I was very fond of my little buddies, they've been gone for six years, but are always in my heart forever, such loving dogs! (and if you ever find one in a shelter, get em out at once)
I have a rescue. You are right in what you have said. His big sister is a bordercollie lab. He likes to think he is boss but she holds her own if needed. He has a stubborn streak but has learned I am pack leader and to obey. Luckily we have a 10 acre property and he loves a good chase whether it be butterflies or and other flying insect. He is a good hunter. He's also very affectionate too.
Absolutely the best terrier and the most loyal companions, but, as you say, they are wilful and challenging to train without strong leadership. Get it wrong, you'll have your life run for you, get it right, and you will have the best buddy in the world!
I've had my patterdale for almost 3 years. She is extremely energetic and strong willed. Very challenging indeed. Every night she cuddles next to me in my bed. Definitely worth the challenge. I just love her soo much ❣️
wonderful dogs. hard work but all worth it. my baby is one of the most softest and loving dogs i’ve ever met. however they do never seem to grow up, the puppy never leaves them. 9 years old and still bounces around the place haha.
Totally agree! I live with 2 on an acre and a half of land and they use every inch of it. Needed to fence all boundaries, they loved to explore and escape. They are lovely dogs but not for the faint hearted! Think someone said “ If it’s got fur or feathers they will kill it” These pair have taken down crows, pigeons, squirrels, rats, foxes, badgers and we had to rescue a deer one morning. If an elephant came in they would have had a serious go! 😂 But the most loving and loyal dogs ever. Tons of character ❤️
I'm torn between a Patterdale and Jagdterrier. I just bought an acre and a quarter. I know these dogs are not for the faint, so I need to really consider getting one. I currently own a Frenchie and a Golden as pets.
Idk how I feel about this. I was a first time owner, got him at 10 weeks, I've been strong patient and loving with him. He's not perfect but I definitely put a lot of work with him as he is not as unruly or untrained as some. Rescue circumstances I get and issues do arise but they are a ridiculously intelligent breed. Capture their attention, gain some respect and you've got them. I think that goes for any dog. Are you fully enjoying your dog if they have to be muzzled or kept on a lead and are they fully enjoying their surroundings. If possible I think everyone should strive for that freedom and control whilst having an amazing bond. I have it and it's everything to me, I wish I could give that to everyone. Regardless everyone loves their pat, they just have incredible character and personality. They're something else for sure!
I had a patterdale and it was the most active dog I have ever had! Amazing for hikes also jumped like crazy when i would leave the house i would come back to a big ol hole in my yard but still what an amazing dog RIP DAISY ❤

I've had 3 pstterdales.i lost on at 18yrs and the one I have now is 14months old and replaced the 18yr old one . Shes amazing very intelligent warm and loving very self independent and loves anybodies rabbit hole Agree with what you say the breed requires azure experience with clear boundaries. I made a point of linking in with the dogs trust in obedience classes a good vets practice and just lately wearing a ruffwhere dogs harness which has been a game changer for walking etc She likes to feel secure so the dog grate in the care also settles her. Shes a great dog but requires management .she lives with another of my dogs and there's only one boss and thats me 😅😅😊uk 🇬🇧 ❤️
I have a male Patterdale since 3 Years. The Dog has adopt me, not i him. And at beginning, he was terrible, but with Love and exersices he grows to an smart, lovely and abolutly loyal Bestfriend closed to my Heart deep inside me. Never will miss him i swaer. Every Time he is with me 24/7 how ever i go, he goes with me or i let it be. If Dog isnt welcome i dont go visit Friends, Family...before marriage Party of my Son, Dogs must stay outside. So i said then will not come. You want meet me, than only with my Dog Lucky.
Also I got mine from the plasma center, I went up there to go donate and said awww can I pet it? So I did, and they said how much money you got, I said less than ten, so I gave her $5!!! For my Bella! Perfect dog, she is definitely Daddy's favorite girl, as I always tell her
Very good advice here but mine is incredibly affectionate towards people. His best buddy is a female bloodhound, only dog that can tire him out. Very intelligent little dogs too.
Don't you think if you bred a gamebred terrier like a Patterdale, Jack or jagd with an even more formidable big game breed like a Dogo Argentino, Presa Canario or Kangal it would result in an even more badass mix than a pitbull?
There are already people who mix Patterdales with Pit Bulls. I have owned both breeds. They are totally different. The Patterdale is a small dog. I would not buy one for protection or to own a "tough dog." They are too small. They are hunting dogs for small game. I can't really see a reason to mix one with a Pit. Just buy a smaller Pit, if you want a smaller dog.
@@dicaeopolis8522 Well ptibulls were created from breeding the larger bulldog with the smaller terrier and they have their use. I can see someone wanting a mix just because pitbulls are larger and stronger making them more formidable but they don't really have the same prey drive or hunting instincts like a small terrier. Someone may be looking for good blend of both. I think both breeds are very tough but patterdales are obviously smaller so unrealistic to expect them to protect your house from any intruder that isn't a small animal, just like I wouldn't expect a pitbull to protect me from a bear or moose
Had a lovely patterdale, most likely a cross, 18 years. Amazing personality full of character, unbelievable energy and tenacity. "Fearless" is how I would describe, but also hard to control and needs ideally wide open spaces to be getting rid of all that energy - they can run chasing things full out for hours and hours until they drop. Very friendly with people, would never think about biting and actually really well behaved in the house. Fearless though to other dogs, even dogs twice their size, they'll happily go into a scrap with a German Shep - and likely win! Also - really really fast. He used to outpace other dogs, but bear in mind he was likely a cross (but looked almost 100% patterdale), so slightly bigger than other patterdales.
I have a black alpha female Patterdale. I adopted her as a rescue puppy. I've had her 4 years now and she is my best friend. She can be high strong and gets really nervous about the vet and makes her presence very well known. However she is an amazing dog and the 4 years of owning her she hasn't growled or snapped at me or my family once. I love to death, I highly suggest looking into this breed if you are okay with high energy and stubborn dogs.

Love this breed, I have 2 now. They are very intelligent, sensitive dogs, are both easy to train and very eager to please. They still have an independent streak but I'm able to call them both off anything unless they are down a rabbit hole then they've to be dragged out! Ha
I had a dog that my brothers friend found I thought it was a Lab and Staffy mix I had that dog for 12 years I actually think that it was a Patterdale now He dug, got into scraps with big dogs, he would run away and hunt and roll around in a dead carcass. Never barked always played. Liked woman and children. I miss that guy. I am ready for a Patterdale soon.
I've got a small Patterdale mix and this is phenomenal information about these dogs and I've only got about half of a full Patterdale but loves to go at it with any small animal that it sees I've seen him Chase deer. That digging thing he loves to dig holes. Great piece of information though it's even having just half of one it's an amazing breed. RLTW 3/75
I don't recommend keeping one Patterdale on it's own. They are very much pack-orientated and WILL challenge the human pack's hierarchy if there's nothing else to dominate!

I have a brown one he’s lovely my best mate, can be a handful but trained him well, have a boarder terrier too they are inseparable truly partners in crime and love each other. My patterdale is a 100% patterdale no cross breed but he is Very tall never seen another patterdale as tall as him
love my Patterdale the dog in the video is the spitting double of mine best dog i have ever had he is so smart but can be cheeky only downside is he does not like to be left alone so we have his brother alot when we are at work biggest issue we have had is letting him off the lead as his nose takes over so would always recommend a tracker with these dogs just incase and as we found out you can not take the hunting side away from them so if you do let them off the lead expect them to come back with a rabbit or something small even if there not trained to hunt and the are good around other dogs and people however they can be very protective and get jealous but nothing basic training can not fix
I had a black paterdale named Walle for 11 years. Had seizures most of his life but that’s not what did him in. After the 3rd time eating something that got stuck in his gut, there weren’t anymore surgeries I could do. These dogs punch well Above their weight class and have perpetual energy. He escaped my parents back yard once by jumping clear over a 4 foot high fence. RIP.
Patterdales need experienced owners. Your video is on point. Hopefully you put off a few unsuitable owners. We rescued ours from life in an apartment. She's an excellent dog and we love her dearly. She'll kill anything that isn't canine on sight though.
My nephew was gifted one from his aunt who works the farms. It was the hairy coat variety and ugly to us. But damn, this dog grew to be an awesome dog. Boundless energy. Killed all the stray cats, possums, rodents, gofers, etc. He fought off stray dogs. A true warrior dog. He keeps up on foot with them Costco scooters for miles and miles. A lot of dog packed into that little body! Now I know what breed he is thanks to your channel, should we ever need another one.
Great analysis. Would love, love to have one, but from what you have said I would not be an ideal candidate for this dog, which would not be fair to me or the dog.
So like I've got a patterdale terrier and he's the first ever non-pitbull dog I've ever owned and I mean he really is high energy but like he said something about them not being apartment dogs I live in my car (not necessarily homeless just doing the van life thing for a little bit) and my guy is happy as can be

I have a black Patterdale with a little white markings, I agree with the guy in the video NOT apartment kind of dog.., But Dolly gets left with other dogs all the time from 2 miniature poodles to 2 boarder collies mixed with Australian sheep dog and gets lots of fun chasing cars while fenced in on 3 acres..I love my dog...also a rescue dog...will have her almost 1 year in July.....and boy oh bou does she love to bark, but doesn't dig holes, praise God..
All correct. This dog is boundless energy, we cannot burn it out. Maybe if the trainer is skilled it can curb some of its tracking and hunting behaviors but I still feel like it would need a lot of attention. Thankfully its not a whiner when left alone.
Just realized today that my fat boys is a patterdale dog. He is black, short hair, and lazy and fat. He has been a pain to train. Love my fat boy Hanz. He is a tank, and tough as hell on strangers walking by the yard. He is intimidating for such a small (ish) dog.
I had one of these crossed with a jack Russel and it would attack anything. Killed a big polecat one day in my garden.. Damn he was a vicious dog, but loved.
I have a black patter dale with a white front.Her name is Poppy.She is the most playful dog ever and we have a few mice in our area which we catch in traps then let her watch it.She whines alot when she hasn't got attention.
A have a catahoula /amstaff mix..alot of people told me oh catahoulas aren't for everyone ....but with any working dog as long as they know your the alpha and give them stimulation you'll be fine..this dog same thing. Basically any working breed type of dog shouldn't be left home alone it will find something to do lol....I crate train my dog..she's 6 months and 50lb...

My rescue patterdale is amazing....unless you're small and furry, in which case you are gonna be chased and chewed on! Can't let him off the lead,he probably won't stop running until hes about 20 miles away! He's also very protective of his new pack and takes no shit from any other dog!
My Bella is an absolute angel that does love strangers, but will kill bunnies, but will kiss babies, also loves running in large open areas with other dogs, and gets along with kitties as well and won't even kill a kitten
Ive been considering many breeds for dogs in the future when 14 year old pitty dies. I think this is what i need. My pits used to keep all the racoons, snakes, and even bugs away from the house (we live in the woods). I think a Patterdale will fit in in my home. We have lots of snakes and nice for it to kill.
