3:10 Patti is like ok this is for Dr King so I’m not gonna show out. 3:15 the spirit comes on her. 3:20 the Earth opens and Category 4 Hurricane Patti claims another roof - it blew the hell off. 342 people were saved, there were 98 re-dedications, and 157 volunteered for missionary trips to the Congo on the spot.
I have enjoyed Patti singing this song for many a decade, but 27 years later, this continues to be my absolute favorite performance by her. I really wish there was a lot more footage of Patti prior to 1986. There was somethin about her back when she was still trying to break through, that I just can't get enough of.
This has to be the absolute most amazing performance ever known to mankind. And I think we take for granted that this was filmed and is still available to watch to this day! 😍😍😍 people dont understand why I love this video so much. Just imagine being in the audience when she hit that climax and went off like that! Man! What a treat! I know those people weren’t ready 😩 they thought it would be a regular night! Okay I’m done.❤
have seen her many times. First time was at the Kennedy Center, on her first solo tour in '77, a year after LaBelle broke up..it was that first album of hers, she toured on. And in those days, which was just a few yrs before this performance in the early 80s, her version of 'Over the Rainbow', just made your jaw drop..because before her version, no one had ever sung it like this, with the big notes in the middle and the end. Just an incredibly gifted vocalist.
This never gets old. I must watch it a couple of times every month. It's exhilarating, emotional, and gets me up on my feet, every time...in my own home!!
Same here! I feel like she's shows us that being yourself is the greatest gift you can give. She stayed true to herself her whole career through ups and downs, and because she did she has legit legend status
This is the absolute best version captured I’ve encountered on RU-vid. I’ve watched multiple versions of the song performed by Patti but I just… idk. It was just something too perfect about her vocals choices. The arrangement… the band.. backup vocals. The way Patti climaxes… the way she eclipse this one… I wonder if this version is on record honestly
Judy Garland was a great all around performer. But to me she doesnt come close to patty. She lacked the power and dynamics that patty had in her voice. Judy achieved more financial success that patty but we all know the reason why. She appealed to a broader audience and Patty's style of singing didnt appeal to the masses as much. That dramatic church going delivery was a bit to much for the more conservative listener at the time. I always felt if she would have added a more pop appeal to her sound she would have come close to whitney's popularity and financial success. But that's not the kind of woman she was. She stayed true to her roots and sound and still became a icon on her own terms. Thank you patty for staying true to your sound, that's why her loyal fans love her.
Wow, Patti LaBelle makes me cry every time in joy and celebration. Her voice brings me to tears because it is the most mystical instrument ever. It is like God giving us a gift every time she sings. This is by far one of her top of many great of many brilliant of many outstanding of many beautiful performances.
Thank You Lord, If Birds Can Fly, Tell Me Why Can't I!!! I Listen To This Ev'ryDay! Have You Ever Noticed Her Hands Shakes Ev'ry Now & Then We She Sings, I JUS LOVE THAT! SIMPLY PATTI LaBELLE!!!!!!!!
I met her once when my ex father in law who play saxophone on some of her albums introduced My ex wife and I to her. She the same way in person as she is on stage. Ain't nothing phony about her.
I think this is the first time I've seen Patti wearing a hair style using her own hair!! I LOVE it!! I LOVE her and her vocal gymnastics...NO ONE like her!!!
@ShangoJamal phillyTre I forgot to thank you soooo much for re-posting this great classic. Raw, rich and real... that's our Patti. THANK U! THANK U! THANK U!!!
