In this video I examine 2 vintage Patton High Velocity Air Circulator fans with motor problems. I examine the build quality, do some troubleshooting, & do a repair that involves replacing armature spacers and lubricating the motor of the larger fan.
Fan model U2-1487 - 14" fan manufactured in 1998
Fan model U2-1887 - 18" fan manufactured in 1988
I would very much like to hear other's feedback on whether there is a better lubrication strategy for this motor.
I apologize for some portions of the video being out of focus.

I have the 1887 fan and have had it for years and it's worked great but I need to pull the motor apart and try to repair it. Thank you. Hopefully I will be able to do it thanks to your video.

We had a pair of Patton HV fans like these in the very early 90s. They were amazing. We had no AC then and once we got it got rid of the fans. They had silver blades. I wish I had them now.

Thanks for the lesson. I have several Patton’s, a couple of Hampton Bay. The Hampton Bays are surprisingly good quality. I’m looking forward to making a winter project out of these. Your video will be a great help. Thanks.

Sleeve bearings for high speed motors are generally vacuum impregnated with a light spindle oil after machining to size. Or as you mentioned, there will be an oil soaked felt ring which gradually surrenders it's oil to the moving surfaces over the "life" of the bearing. Not too many people will have access to a vacuum chamber, but one of those ziplocked plastic bags with the vacuum port for food storage may do the trick. McMaster Carr sells oil, graphite, and PTFE (teflon) impregnated sleeve bearings. However, as I recall you can also buy impregnated bronze bearing stock and if you have a machinist friend, machine your own bearings.

I have a Patton u2-1287 from 1989. It runs good if you have it positioned to blow are straight ahead. But if you tilt it back just 10 degrees the shaft that turns the blades vibrates forwards and backwards inside the motor and makes an annoying noise as a result. Would love to figure out if this is fixable because it's a powerful little fan.

Did you figure out the lubrications situation? I’ve got the 1887 and just last night it started cutting out. I think the thermal switch is tripping because it’s getting too hot. I’m assuming the bearings in it are starting to encounter more friction, and it probably needs some lubrication

I will donate my fan to your collection... I believe it is the same as your second one with the cupped bearing... Come and get it... (northeastern Indiana)...

I have a Patton High Velocity Air Circulator (circa 1990s?) in great condition and it's still going strong except I accidentally bent one of the (blue) blades (sick about it). I know it might be a long shot ... would you know where I can find a replacement propeller? Model: U2-1887 Serial: 92-U23-007116 115v 60hz 300w 4.1amps I appreciate any leads.

Nice Vid! I've a question about the wiring on the switch. What ports are the cord inserted in? Also how is the capacitor connected, to which wires. Thanks!

Maybe I can answer that question for you , if you have a patton hv fan like this , there should be wiring diagram on the motor .

Great video! I have the 1887. it has started making a motor rattle.. loudest at slow, less at medium and none at fast. I see the shaft moving slightly in and out, causing the rattle... thus at high speed it "pulls" the shaft and does not move back and forth. Could this be one or both spacers going/gone? Help please! :)

What was that material inside of those bearings? I had similar material in my patton fan bearing but it is now inside my vacuum cleaner

Hello really nice video this gives a lot of instruction and details on servicing a patton fan , I have patton fan just like yours it's the same identical model but I think mine is a year less of yours , but the motor to my fan suddenly burned up just recently, would you be able to help me on where I can find replacement or would have A spare one that you could sell to me ? If anyone could help me with this problem I really would appreciate it thanks.

how do you remove the cord! that plastic piece is driving me insane
@yogibearstie

Did you figure it out? I think someone pulled my Patton fan by the cord and broke a wire. The fan will run if I loop the cord through the handle, otherwise it’s dead. Brake is somewhere near the fan, so I want to disconnect the wire from the switch and reconnect minus about 4” of wire.

For my Patton Fan model TG-1887, I'm looking for a replacement for my motor run capcitor Vim QPC-MEB8. Would you happen to know where I could find this part or something equivalent?

8UF 250VAC is the spec for it, in theory one like this should work: www.amazon.com/PODOY-CBB61-Ceiling-Capacitor-250VAC/dp/B0143VJN40

At the 5:08 mark, “the bearings were dry, so it was intermittently singing the song of their people.” FUNNY COMMENT. For more similar humor everyone should go watch the YT video titled DIARY OF A SAD CAT. It states that when the SAD CAT is locked outside the bedroom door that it would “…sing the song of its people outside the door.”

At the 5:38 mark, I was shocked (no pun) at the difference in the two motors. The U2-1487 was so weak looking next to the much better built U2-1887. Much like WALLY COX standing next to ARNOLD SWARZENEGGER. Sadly, I own the (non-working) U2-1487 model. Is it any wonder it failed!
