Paul,great video almost like being in your lounge with you and a cup of tea or pint,great criteria for choosing new pole and as you say exspensive if you have to change all the top kits so great advice ,also good to hear after chipping in your pension all those years you actually got something out of it ,keep up the good work 👍

Well presented Paul As you said, Its what floats your boat. I think the bit about Top kit number is most interesting. Thats why I chose the MAP 1001 Margin Pole as the TKS Kits fit the Pole. I also think the comments about Company's not really looking after you is very to the point. Matrix I think has great products but their Customer service leaves so much to be desired and are also not the best in the market for sensible priced kits etc. Cheers

Thanks, agree what you say about Matrix, as a company I’m just not confident in them enough to buy one of their poles.

Thanks for the pole decision thoughts. I am not in a position yet to spend quite so much and have this year started Pole fishing. Have a Shimano Comp given to me by a friend as a starter. working quite well as I fitted a puller bung on the 2 top kits. Also made a cup kit out of some spares and a kit with a No1 section. Not sure what the next jump should be. Looking to spend about 1,000 as i want to do some club matches

It’s difficult and after many years I’ve concluded that waggling an unelasticated pole indoors is of limited benefit. If you can wait until towards the end of the year as new ranges of poles are launched there should be some good deals on current models. I’ve done this a few times. I’m not a fan of buying a brand new models on new mandrels, you pay top price and you risk getting a pole with a faulty section that hasn’t been picked up in testing, I don’t mean a section that breaks but one with a built in defect (one version of the Airity had a no 6 section which broke for a lot of people). Also you need to be comfortable that spare sections are available for new models. Maver are launching new poles next year ‘x’ models with new mandrels and different top kits (18mm diameter). You may be able to pick up something like an Oculus 999xs for near your budget, fab proven Pole, great top kits, excellent spares availability.

Brilliant video. Very informative. I am in my mid 50s and got back into fishing after the covid lockdown. I was lucky enough to be able to borrow a pole for 12 months , having only used rods previously, but now need to buy my own. I only have a 800 to 850 budget, and after running through my own criteria , including spares, I am down to a choice between Preston and Maver. I am leaning towards Maver as can get 14.5.m ( never needed to fish longer so far) for well below budget as they are slightly older pole models and so good discounts against original RRP , the MVR Performance for example. Preston top kits do seem good though. Hope you are still enjoying your purchase .

I had a Maver MVR performance 14.5m when I got back into fishing, its an absolutely fabulous piece of kit, I paid around £800 for it, when upgrading I put it against a Daiwa G90 (almost double the cost) and it knocked spots of it, way stiffer, very well balanced, smooth shipping and great kits....

Robust is how I describe my maver items. Understand your thoughts with this video, I've had map tks poles since it's inception and have around 20 plus power kits I don't want to part with but not sure I want to stay in the map stable. Great video like the honest review.
@paulstacklereviews1695
@paulstacklereviews1695 2 года назад
Thanks for the good feedback. It’s tough to change brands, but some companies have let themselves down on spares availability, mainly the ones getting their gear from the Far East. MAP apparently have new models later this year so that will be a key factor in your decision I suspect.

Great video Paul, Bang on with tricast top kits ,I waited 5 weeks for my top kits for my tricast excellence 980,and that was from Bob co, who I consider the best ,and fastest of postage of fishing tackle in the country. I've had five maver poles, I tried the 921 and 821 , they in my opinion were better than the browning sphere, my tricast 980 was on the same level as those two poles... My tricast I got for only a grand so that was my reason for buying it . Preston x90 isn't good at long lengths, ,the x70 is a better buy.. I think the middy reactacore x65-3 is the best pole for the 3 k Mark. But maver also have a warranty on all their poles, You are right about maver,preston,matrix being the best for spares. I think you've chosen wisely... I think preston rolla pullers are the best on the market. Why all fishing companies don't bush and fit all side pullers as standard I don't nw. I think it will be standard eventually, I hated fitting my top kits... I did some, but the new top kits I got them fitted for me. I'm 52 Paul, are we really classed as old mate 😁
@paulstacklereviews1695
@paulstacklereviews1695 2 года назад
Thanks for the good feedback. Interesting comments from you as someone who has seen a lot of poles. Tricast seemed to have struggled more during covid, I suspect they aren’t a big operation so one or two staff down has a disproportionate effect. Their website being 4 years out of date doesn’t help. The middy spares prices are very high e.g. £664 for a number 8! I’m very happy with my purchase, you got a real bargain with yours. The Maver roller bush is brilliant, I’m converted. I don’t feel old, the mirror says otherwise!
@kirkhogan2688
@kirkhogan2688 2 года назад
Yeah middy let themselves down with no puller kits fitted and in my opinion excessive prices for sections, otherwise their poles would be more popular. I had daiwa poles before felt they had weak spots on the no4 and no 5s Mavers warranty is brilliant, Being heavy handed in the past always got plenty of spare no4s from them, and sections from discontinued poles... My tricast pole is brilliant at all lengths,shame about the spares I've a preston monster margin pole, and once I used that I fitted all my top kits by tricast with it... No other brand is as good... I had the old green maver pole side pullers and they weren't great. . Enjoy your pole!Paul...

Hi Paul, I know this is on old video, but it’s been really helpful, kind of. I’ve a maver oculus 799, and i’m caught in two minds, to change to a different brand or buy a couple of short power kits, couple of long no’4s and short 4 . If I’m honest I never ever fish over 13m and usually on natural waters which are very deep, with the occasional visit to a commercial for f1s and carp. Any guidance would be really welcome.
@paulstacklereviews1695
@paulstacklereviews1695 3 месяца назад
It’s handy when fishing deep venues to have extra long 4s to have more set up. I use a short 4 all the time unless deep venues, I think using a short 4 and a Dolly butt if you need the distance is a stiffer action than using a long 4 and no Dolly butt, plus when you’re netting good fish you can break down with the short 4 in your hand to control bonus fish. You will need to spend a good amount to see a marked improvement at 13m on your current pole. Good second hand poles do come up, I saw an Occulus 999xs for £650 recently which would give you a full set of spares which may be a better decision than stretching to a new pole.. I only use short kits for F1 shallow fishing and hit and hold big elastics (18-20 solid) with my margin pole - you need to think if this is what you do, I always use normal length kits for carp shallow. Hope this helps.
@savmunago5505
@savmunago5505 3 месяца назад
Hi Paul, I’d not even thought about the 999 - I’ve been all over, Preston x70 , Daiwa G90, but I think your right, keep with the brand that I know, and just add some long 4’s - it’s what need. Really helpful. Thank you.

I’ve not handled the 821, but I understand very little and I nearly got the 821. Callum Dicks chooses the 821 for his fishing. I’ve probably spent £500 more for a very marginal improvement at long lengths I rarely fish!

I'm tighter budget, but am looking for a 16m looking at mtx 3 or superium 50,thought bout 2nd hand but most are repaired sections , I really look after my kit, my 301 is as good as I brought it last year and I just don't trust a pole that's tatty, I know what you mean about top kits, I did consider buying the 601 but tbh I need to sell my pole for as much as possible and without the good selection going with the pole I wouldn't get enough to buy the next one, I'm on disability so money is tight, even though I can get by with 6 kits that Preston n matrix come with and the map 501 is only 2 models better than mine and I just not convinced 16m will really be fishable

@paulstacklereviews1695
@paulstacklereviews1695 2 года назад
It’s purely down to Matrix performance getting spares. I had a go with someone’s MTX4 and thought it was great. Lots of poor stories waiting for matrix sections, Daiwa, Maver and Preston are the best for spares. It may change going forward but not prepared to take the risk.

Great video, I've had maver poles since I started fishing about 12 years the first I had was a 12.5 maver jurassic which was given to me by my father in law nothing could break that pole, then he gave me his maver ascension again as strong as an ox, after that I brought a maver enigma carp1 £500 again strong as you like and still going strong now. I've thought about buying other makes as it is just to heavy for me but I've come to the same conclusion that maver are still the all round best pole for all the same reasons as you have mentioned, looking forward to your reviews and tips on the 921

It can get confusing with all the top kits. I have a label maker I bought from Argos years ago. I got a clear cassette ribbon to go in it off eBay. I print a small number and stick it on my top kits at the bottom. If you look at my video called ‘perfect top kit set up’ at around 16 minutes I show the printer and what it looks like on the top kit. There are others on eBay but have found the labels I make stay on better and you can label other things like hook boxes. Enjoy your brilliant new pole.

Each to there own but I wouldn’t touch Maver, Iv never met anyone who hasn’t broken theirs at some point. My mate bought the 821 and it was stiff at poker all be it heavy/not well balanced for the price. it was an absolute disaster, he ended up taking it back after three sections went with no pressure on them at all, first day the 5th folded plumbing up. The replacement went after two hours of careful fishing, the third time was the final straw. He bought an air z, never had a problem since. I’m surprised you haven’t considered the gurus or cadence poles.

Like a lot of fishing tackle people have very different experiences. My Signature pro 800 and 921 have both been incredible for all styles of fishing without fault. I’d be reluctant to try a pole like the Guru that was new to the market. Need to see if there are any faults and whether spare sections have good availability.

It’s all opinions. In my view at any price point the Daiwa will be a great pole but not the most responsive or stiffest. Look at Ricky Richard’s RU-vid review of the Maver 821, he said it was stiffer and a better pole than his Daiwa (same price bracket), with a better package. I have handled many Daiwas. I agree Maver poles were brittle a few years ago, not any more.
