This is the ending of Paul Gertner's Cups and Steel Balls performed on Penn & Teller: Fool Us. This is from rehearsals... check out the red ball reveal.
Three separate kickers makes for a superb ending, although I think I'm most impressed by how you don't well up every time you perform this with this storytelling.
Don't care how any of this is done, I think we all know the basics... it is visually stunning and beautiful routine. However, my favorite thing about Paul is just how overwhelmingly likeable he is.
Paul's version of the cups and balls when I first seen it blew my mind,it is absolutely genius and a unique take on my all time favourite trick. It still blows my mind after all these years not because it fools me but because its so dam unique and clever and this ending took what I thought is a perfect trick that cannot be improved anymore and makes it even better. Thanks
Hey Paul, awesome trick. The only critique I would offer is to not to pour out all the cola which shows just how little there is in the can; just pour out enough for a gulp.
It’s so clear that the ball to big for the cup is pulled from under the table... Also for the red balls: when he is done “pulling out the giant ball” he puts that cup to the side (under the table) and takes another cup packed with red balls and puts it to the right. It probably has some sort of cap keeping the red balls in when he picks that cup up
A few factors that really give it away: 1. Magic isnt real. 2. He puts his hands too many times under the table and also the cups. 3. The coke can be seen bending, but even without, the logo on the top half doesnt match the bottom half. Still a great trick.
This is one of my two favorite cups and balls routine ever. The other being Paul Daniels' Chop cup routine.. I'm a magician, and the coke can fooled me. I have no idea. And i don't want to know.. Cheers Paul Gertner ..
Amazing work! This is possibly my favorite rendition of the cups and balls trick, and the red ball reveal was phenomenal. What made the sponges so congealed during the fool us performance?
Trying to analyze that. Camera lights, or set time between set and performance, or I might have been too aggressive and added a few too many. I was disappointed that happened, but this is what it was supposed to look like.
Victor H What I can't understand about this is he always says he doesn't know where the big ball vmcame from, but he brought it up from behind the table the same time as he lifted the cup up. He is not being truthful here!
That is just fantastic! I love how the metal balls make the cups ring like bells and when you try to put the biggest ball into the cup and it doesn’t fit...love it!
My jaw was already on the floor for the most part of the performance, but the coke trick was what really got me. (Spoiler alert?)The only way I can think of fitting that coke can inside is by the coke can being custom made to either have two halfs that are compressible with a spring and bladder on the inside, or it being custom made of some flexible material. Either way, that trick was phenomenal, as was the entire performance.
as Penn and Teller hints: "the glass is half full" "there are many things that are compressable that we think are solid" he had to empty the can all the way to fill that small glass because the can is half full, and its compressable.
Ok, I know this routine is half a decade old, but I absolutely love the cups and balls, I’m not a magician and have no interest in how he did it, but it’s makes me feel warm and happy… great job Paul.
Something about the cheers to your dad in this seems even more genuine (not that it wasn't on FU) than on the show. I thought the execution on the show was flawless untill I saw this. Holy fuck. An emotional twist that is out of pocket and still on topic? Brilliant.
