From the Back Street Crawler album, I just put this together quickly to give you a chance to hear this amazing track Koss wrote after his near death experience. Hence the title "Time Away" because of his stay in hospital. From memory Simon Kirke is on drums.

You don't need vocals when you have a man who sings with his guitar. Paul Kosoff was that man...

First heard this while working in a radio station. Got the album as a promo and NOBODY wanted to even listen to it. (Disco, huh...) I listened while doing an overnight and was stunned. It cemented Koss as one of my favorite guitarists (right there with Zappa and Django). Amazing piece of music. Thank you so much for the post.

The most amazing thing about kossoff is that he is an old school guitar player ..theres an amplifier and a chord straight into to a gibson les paul nothin more the sound is in the finger tips! Many player put loads of money in equipment and they complain they cant get a variety of sounds in a les paul guitar..I tell them listen to Paul Kossoff!! Its all in the playing technic feeling and touch of course ..talent

'Kossoff's unhappiness with the end of Free and his drug addictions contributed to a drastic decline in the guitarist's health. On a flight from Los Angeles to New York on 19 March 1976, Kossoff died from heroin-related heart problems. The day before, he had a jam session with keyboard player Dennis Provisor. He was cremated and interred at the Golders Green Crematorium. His epitaph reads "All Right Now". wiki

His father came to my school once to put on an anti-drugs campaign using Paul's music 27 years ago. Nobody had heard of Paul Kossoff but when we left the show we did and played Free on the football pitch smoking weed, ironic really. It was an afternoon I'll never forget because we were mostly 5th formers who were starting to get into Floyd and the rest and starting to see Guns n Roses as manufactured garbage. Paul R.I.P.

Just found this and with 19 March not far off very thought provoking. Reading the comments is sad and I agree with most, but listen to the Guy's playing and it will make you smile. Sometimes sad but always powerful and a really unique sound that few have come close to. For Koss afficionado's I commend the book Heavy Load by David Clayton and for aural treat the original extended studio version of The Stealer released on a CD compilation a year or two back. What a solo!!

His Dad, famous in his own right, was devastated when his little boy died and devoted the rest of his life touring and warning of the futility of drugs. This song though feels like its really from the heart and soul, beautiful.

Indeed. Koss was, to quote Andy Fraser, the ultimate feel player. He was riddled with insecurity and never felt he was really any good because he was, despite his accomplishments with Free, really not very good at rote playing. It was tremendous effort for him and you really see at times with Free when he breaks free for a solo how striking his own style is compared to the songs. He felt that was a weakness but I always thought it made him so exciting.

WOW! Thank you so much for posting this with the amazing photos. Kossoff was one of the greats, even at such a young age. I have the Backstreet Crawler album, and most Free albums. Although the whole band was phenomenal, IMHO, it was Kossoff who was the heart and soul.

I stood outside a venue along with about 4 times the number of people that it could hold waiting for Free. They announced that the band couldn't play because Koss was 'ill' which meant he was bombed out of his head somewhere. The riot was very nasty. I never got another chance to see him. Sadly.

I own his Eko acoustic, he lent it to my dad back in the day, and died of the overdose before my dad returned it. but its still being put to use, im a singer songwriter myself (this is my music channel) and soon ill have another vid up, with most guitar recorded on it, mostly slide I will never be able to replace the legend of the guitars original owner, but wat i can do is keep playing it and putting it to its musical use, like it was made to Its what paul would have wanted R.I.P mate
