I have always loved Paul's music however kd lang as back singer omg 😲 the most underrated diva and probably one of the most underrated popular icon in our industry we love you kd lang ❤
But you fans of Paul’s “back-up” singer are all committing a SIN: It’s NEVER K.D. or KD Lang… it’s kd lang! Lower case, always! I’ve had the incredible fortune to have seen her FIVE TIMES from the Orchestra Pit at Wolf Trap in Vienna, Virginia to a small theatre in Oakland, CA. She always sang Roy Orbison’s, “Crying” whether she was promoting “Absolute Torch and Twang,” “Ingenue” or “Invincible Summer,” you just KNEW she’d bring the audience to their feet with THAT SONG & THAT VOICE! That’s kd lang❤️
Yes, for that song she was doing a guest appearance and singing backup vocals with the rest of the band. Paul gave her a kiss on the cheek and KD gave Linda McCartney a hug. KD sang and dance during the song and for all appearances she had fun which was the idea of the guest appearance. Stop making this into some slight of KD Lang by Paul McCartney. If she was upset about his introduction, I am sure you would have heard about it.
She may be humble and kind, but Paul comes from a Band that are Icon's of all time. That band will forever go down in History, even if this Earth is as it is, a thousand years from now.,
KD is great but not better than Paul. Try listening to Paul’s vocal from 60’s and 70’s in his prime. I’m not knocking KD at all but Paul is one of the greatest singers ever and easily the most successful. Listen to Oh Darling for starters. You can see in this video that KD was excited to be on the same stage with Paul.
Paul's singing is boyishly ordinary. KD is a true diva and probably the most underrated and under appreciated artist of her generation. She chose to be true to her inner guidance and shunned the riches that could easily been hers. In a word .. She is spell-binding.
@@lynneheather2790 you are absolutely right my lady!!! I'd surely isn't anybodies back up singer, Paul's arrogance is properly noted!!! Yes, he's definitely a great singer, but his style is far from the magnificent kd Lang's vocal talent, and ability to outshine the beautiful and hauntingly stunning gifted voice of the GREAT kd Lang!!!
This displays an incredible ignorance. When people cover "Baby I'm Amazed" they always use two singers because his range is greater most singers. Someone being talented doesnt make someone else not talented. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GOYq9JiBW3s.html
Seriously, this was 1993, KD was no where as well known as she is now. He did say “We are very honored to have a special backup vocalist join us . . .” And no he wasn’t saying that she is JUST a backup vocalist but that is exactly what she is on this song. She probably was there to see all the other performers as well as perform herself and was invited to sit in on a song or two. Don’t really know as this was an Earth Day concert. Paul’s music has lasted through the decades and through two generations now and he is still amazing. There’s no reason to try to insult him over some imagined slight toward KD. They are both awesome at what they do. Wise saying I once heard, “Don’t take offense where offense is not intended”.
I think y'all are missing the point. kd was having a blast. Paul was having a laugh. They have both been privileged to work with many, many, many of the best, and for a real musician, the chance to make music with other musicians is the pinnacle. kd probably asked to sing back up just for the hell of it; and I loved seeing Linda on the stage; she's been gone so long....
If Paul invited her on stage it’s because he has the upmost respect for her talent and God knows he can recognize talent. As for voice capacity.., she is an amazing singer and Paul is The voice. From long tall sally, to Maybe I’m amazed to oh darling to the entire Ram album, every singer and schooled musician will tell you that, and she’s as good and was also recognized by her peers. You can see that the song and context were not setup for a real showcase of her talent.
I was at this show. There were a ton of other acts on the bill, including Steve Miller, Don Henley, Natalie Merchant, PM Dawn, etc. Singer k.d. lang was listed in the ads along with all the other artists, so her fans were upset that she did not perform a set of her own; this one song, singing backup, was all she did. A big highlight was during the ending of "Hey Jude," when Paul brought out all the other acts to sing along. At the very end, he announced a special guest - Ringo Starr!
I can only imagine her looking over and thinking, " I never would have dreamed I'd be on stage singing with a former Beatle" Think about it, she watched and listened to them, and now she's singing with him. Wow.
KD should have been spotlighted a bit. Not the fame of PC but she can sing circles around him and he should have been generous enough to make the gesture. A bit weird for me,
You do know it is a Paul McCartney concert and did you ever think she was fine with doing whatever on a guest appearance. Really, she can sing rings around one of the greatest voices in Rock And Roll history, please.
@@eileenhaughton3558 Actually no. Totally different singers and to say that somebody can sing rings around McCartney in the pop music world is absurd. McCartney can do beautiful ballads like "The Long And Winding Road" and then rock the joint with killer vocal of "Helter Skelter". Heck, McCartney also did album of old time pop/jazz covers and handled the vocals very well(album got very good reviews). Finally, I did not knock Ms. Lang's talent but people like yourself and others trashed McCartney. BTW - he was joking about "backup" singer remark. Did she ever make remark that she was upset about it, I tend to doubt it !!
@@robertdiepold2242 let's not get carried away. I don't need you tell me about music I know music, I live in America and I have my opinion as anyone else, if her fans don't like it and you don't think anything of it thats your right,
It is a tremendous honour that Sir Paul McCartney would invite KD Lang a Canadian farm girl to his stage. He said to sing backups.. he did NOT say she is a backup singer. And for your information being a backup singer is a tremendous honour as my best friends happen to be KD Langs backup singers and are every bit as talented musicians as Kathy. I would urge you to do your homework.. as KD would want them to be as acknowledged as she is.. music is to be shared and her delightful work with these amazing 'backup' singing voices are heard everyday everywhere around the world especially on Constant Craving with backups by Sue who I sang backups for once upon a time in the 80's. I just hope the back up voices are getting the 'backup' royalties they all deserve.
Exactly. He invited her to join him and the band on a song to "sing" backup. If you look at the video, Ms. Lang comes to the stage and hugs Paul and then Linda comes over to her for a hug. Ms. Lang is singing backup and dancing to the music, in other words she is having fun.
KD stands out beautifully as a back up. I think she is very much noticed even know her Paul. I would love to see her sing with John Lennon. They’ve been to the greatest.
but you miss the point she is a great singer and only appeared on this occasion to offer back up for the main artist she has done it before and doesn't appear to be insulted by doing it.
@@patrickkelly7085 Exactly. She came on and hugged Paul and then Linda came over to embrace her before the song. She was singing and dancing to the song and seemed to be having fun.
I can not imagine any performer of contemporary music to ever be "insulted" to share a stage with Paul McCartney. As an obvious lover of music herself, I would imagine she was pinching herself to make certain she wasn't dreaming that she was given this opportunity. Of course her vocals could drown Paul's, but that wasn't the point. Even though '92 gave her the most commercial success of her career, along with recognition with a '93 Grammy, much of the "buying public" simply wasn't ready to accept K.D's sexuality. Any additional support and exposure she could gain would be helpful. There are still ignorant haters posting on here today. KD's "Hallelujah" performance at the 2010 Olympics was one of the greatest live performances of all time. I have adored Paul since I first laid eyes on him and heard him on the Ed Sullivan show. I was 5. These are two of the brightest stars of contemporary music. No need to diminish the shine of either one with any degree of shade.
how the hell can anyone think that he denegrated KD lang by calling her "special back up singer" it was for one song not a description of her talent or ability to be a soloist. Paul sang backup for John lennon & vs versa many times. KD was probably honored to be invited to sing with the ex Beattle
Let’s put everything in perspective. KD is a voice and interpreter extraordinary. Paul has a poor voice but is a great singer. And he is one of the best songwriters of the second half of the 20 th century. Need we remind everyone of his track record ?
@@1957PLATO You are so true....I always tell people great voice doesnt equate with great singer. I think Mariah Carey has a GREAT voice, but I dont find her a great singer. Sting on the other hand, does not have a great voice but he is a great singer. Takes some thought.
In addition, Paul is one of the better rock bass guitarists of all time. He also can play incredible number of different instruments including drums, piano, keyboard, horns etc.
Absolutely correct. She could also have blown Orbison off the stage, but sensibly chose not to. She chose instead with Orbison to do a masterful coloratura. I like to imagine that Orbison heard her output and said 'Get me this singer." It's only today that I learned she backed up McCarthy. I like to think that he'd never heard of her, but someone told him this is who he needed. Money present and future is involved. She would have made good bucks in both performances. She would have lost future bucks if she had tried to blow away either principal. Lang in my opinion is a phenomenal vocalist. I'd have to go back to opera to find someone with her abilities. It ain't easy being female in a male dominated world. You have to compromise and sometimes bury your talents.
It wasn't a competition, love. I would have cut off my arm to have seen Paul McCartney and kd Lang on the same stage. Actually, I would cut off my arm to see either Paul McCartney or kd Lang on stage. And only Annie Lennox can trump KD as a singer.
Course not. But that is what she did in this song. I wonder why. Anyway, she accepted to be there for...nothing. Quite strange. Maybe she sang more later in this concert.
I read and have heard her say that she loves harmony. So singing with others is something she enjoys doing and she does watch them attentively and she tries never to over power them.....which we all know that she can.
I know this is an old post but seriously, both women are human beings just like the rest of us.. They’re successful, talented people.. Just who’s business is their sexual preference ? Certainly not mine or any of you commenters! I like them just the way they are 😎
In KD LANG MODE 2NITE & I Stumbled across this WONDERFUL TREAT - THANK YOU!!!.......LoL@MACCA.......KD LANG.....Back-Up Vocalist???? LoL! - That Paul is such a Jokester!!! - THANKS Again!
we can all see who has the most stage presence here even if she is not up front she is having a great time..love her hair and attire her iinner feminity shines through and appeals to everyone!!!💝💝💝
Come on Paul ... you have more then a 'back up artist' here ... she is one of the best female artists around, and you should honor that...shame on you.
Carol Furlong Green Everytime you see him do a duet he has the loudest mic so he can sing over better vocalists. If K.D. had used her full voice and full range she would have squashed Paul on that stage...hands down.
Thought he was joking when he called KD a back up singer. Wow how rude was that KD can sing circles around him . He may have been a Beetle but he's not in her class.
Is KD considered one of the greatest songwriters ever? Want to take a bet on who is the better musician KD or McCartney. How many records has KD sold in her lifetime in comparison to McCartney? Does KD sell out huge concerts around the world for decades? Ok, she has a better and more powerful voice but if you don't think McCartney had a great rock and roll voice in his day than I give up.
ah get over it. Your argument is pathetic. On this song( his song) Paul is the vocalist, and KD sings back up, is all. If it was KD's concert and Paul would be invited on stage, he would sing back up, on her song.
KD would never stoop low enough to say something negative about anyone. I’ll be she was doing deep breathing exercises with the way Paul abd his guitarist treated her . Her voice and guitar skills are equally as good as theirs!
I didn't have the chance to see this at the time. Being a huge fan of both, this was my holy grail then!... Paul was on his Off the Ground tour in 1993, and Hope of Deliverance was the current single. But it's absurd how much her voice is wasted here - was her mic on at all? @tjbollman1 is right, she was indeed very humble (and kind to his ego).
I must be seeing and hearing something different- looks to me like kd is enjoying herself, relaxed and happy to do light harmony for this song, dancing and happy, maybe taking it easy for awhile. *shrug* Both are great in their own ways for some rousing energy and dancing- I choose Paul, and kd is inimitable in her own element. I can has both :D
+Katy D Exactly right. kd loves singing harmony - she can go out there and have a good time without putting her ego on the line. McCartney knows what she's capable of, and introducing her as a "backup singer" is a bit of a joke, like having Clapton "fill in" on guitar. It's only the fanboys (and fangirls) who imagine there's the slightest issue.
And she even says specifically in one youtube "I love singing harmony." I can't remember which. May have been her and Melissa Ethridge. And what a fantastic job she did with Melissa!
Macca's best line up since back to the egg, or wings at the speed of sound. I know the recent one is the longest lasting he ever had but I rank it in 4th place from all the bands he ever had.
Having k.d. lang as a backup singer is like having the SR-71 Blackbird as a shuttle plane to take you up to the cottage or a full-grown tiger as a pet kitty. LOL My favourite singer of all time is kd!! Deal with it!! kekekeke I still like Paul and Wings as little bit too. "No More Lonely Nights" is my favourite Wings song btw.
If you look into backup singers so many could blow the doors off vocally of the front man or woman...That is not what singing is about..or music..Jon Anderson sang backup for Gowan.. Johnny Winter opened for George Thoroughgood... one of Tony Orlando's Dawn backup girls sang with the Stones..powerful voice..Muddy Waters and band played backup for Johnny Winter....
*@hardlines4* I have this strange feeling that you've missed something in your (above) statement. How about we rephrase it, and say: "Paul became rather poor singer/songwriter/guitarist since The Beatles broke up and he was forced to perform on his own as (so called Lol...) *Sir. Paul McCartney*. Give me a brake dude... Will ya (?)
I totally agree with you Sharon. I've never been able to understand how the beatles got as far as they did. They sounded like teenage boys and Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr still do.
The petty arguing about her "blowing him off the stage", or about who is the better singer, are utterly misunderstanding the joy, the purpose, and the essence of being a singer or an artist. I hightly doubt that she was offended or cared about being introduced as a "backup" singer. She just came up to make a quick appearance and have some fun. I'm sure they both had fun doing the song, regardless of who was the "lead" or the "backup" or who is considered to have the better voice. Paul is no match for her vocals? So? What difference does that make? It was just a fun performance. Lang is also no match for Paul's songwriting catalog. Again, so? Meanwhile, after McCartney and lang have accomplished so much in their careers, and seem to be perfectly happy just doing one little impromptu song, you are arguing as though they are competing and are somehow jealous or mad at each other? The people wasting time arguing about that have lost the ability to just enjoy them. Instead, you are more obsessed with proving that your favored singer is the "better" one.. with proving you are "right".
Lol, you say his songwriting is better than hers. Have you ever listened and search through KD's stuff? She puts soul and life into every piece she writes and performs. K D Lang is way way better. Her skills equals Celine Dion and Lionel Richie.
@@TripleG69 Sure she is -lol. Try asking any music critic or performer who the better songwriter is and let me know if one person says Ms. Lang. Don't even include McCartney's work with the Beatles, just listen to solo albums that were Grammy nominated for Best Album of the Year. His latest album "Egypt Station" entered the charts at #1 and was critically acclaimed. You have ever right to your opinion but doubt too many people would agree. Let me ask you a favor. Do search on Linda Eder and listen to a few performances. Let me know what you think, will be interested in your opinion of her voice.
Your right she chose to do it she didn't have to good on her it's not a pissing contest they both have talent in their respective fields nobody's nose should have been put out of joint
she, Jennifer Warnes & Bonnie Raitt backed up Orbison for his special... I would not have viewed this unless kd lang was on this cut and I;m a huge McCartney fan
I don't think you've seen her lately. Not to diminish the fact that she's one of the greatest singers of all time, but no one would confuse her with being hot at the present time. 25 years takes a toll on anyone.
Everybody seems to be offended at Paul for calling K. D a back-up vocal but she doesn't seem offended at all, actually she looks like she is having a good time. K. D. has greater voice than Paul, but it is Paul concert and she was only invited not to sing but to accompany him as back up vocal!
