www.pauladeen.com/ I couldn't resist whipping up some fried green tomatoes for yall! Also, congrats to the winners of this weeks Activity of the Week Challenge, Tina Butler and Jackie Ter Louw!
My wife and I made a big batch of fried green tomatoes tonight for the first time, and we made your onion relish to accompany them. We did use a bit of cornmeal on the tomatoes, but followed that relish recipe to a tee and let me say, that relish would be delicious on just about anything breaded and fried: fish, onion rings, zucchini, okra, chicken tenders and maybe even hush puppies. Loved it. So good. Thank you from a couple of countrified New Yorkers.
when I was young we always made chutney with green tomatoes because no one knew what else to do with them. We'd keep it a couple of years and then throw it out because no one liked it. I didn't think frying them would work either, but these were really great, thanks for the recipe Paula. :-) things you wish you'd known 50 years ago!!
I was always thinking fried green tomatoes were yucky when my southern mother made them, but as I got older I fell in love with them. Now we serve them at dinner parties all the time and they are always a huge hit. Interestingly, this recipe is very similar to my mom's. Love you Paula Deen!
Where in the world can I meet a lady with her personality, style, wit ("Yes...they're hot.....did you not see me fryin' em?") and charm? I grew up all my life in the deep south and could not WAIT to join the military and leave. It's funny how now the things I miss most in life are defined by the south. I keep grinning like an idiot unnoticed while listening to Mrs. Deen talk as she cooks those wonderful southern recipes. This is one of my favorites.
For those that don't want pre-blended ingredients needlessly taking up cupboard space, "self rising flour" is: 1 cup all-purpose flour or pastry flour(weaker, less protein than A-P) 1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder 1/4 teaspoon fine table salt Stir well and run it through a sifter 2-3 times to get it good and evenly blended.
You go girl I love your cooking especially cause your from the south like me!!! So far your the best for fried green tomatoes!!! Buttermilk does the trick I love it!!
LOVE Fried Green Tomatoes!!! I also make a Sweet Green Tomato Relish that I can't seem to keep around when my friend hears that I made it. I always have to make a double batch just so I can have some for my family.
Hi Paula! LOVE LOVE LOVE your recipe for fried green tomatoes. I grew up on them too, but these look crispier than the ones I make. Can you do a green tomato pie for us? I've heard of them, but never tried one. Thank you dear lady. You're PRECIOUS.
I've only been to the Lady and Son's once, but man was I a HAPPY Man when I left. Have always enjoyed watching Paula cook. Wish I could have gotten to meet her. If yall ever get the chance to go, please do, you will really enjoy the city and the cooking from Paula.
Best damn recipe in the south for these. We love you Paula Deen! Soooo happy you've been exonerated and all the sheeple who were are on the bandwagon attacking you can now steep in their own stench! Hugs from Glory.
When I was at a Farmer's Market, I saw a lady picking a bunch of green tomatoes from a bin. When I asked what she was making w/ them, she said she was making pie! She told me that the tartness created a yummy pie, much like apple pie.
My mother’s family used to make pepper sauce with green tomatoes, onions, hot peppers vinegar and salt. They canned it in quart sized jars. Now that I’ve remembered how much I liked it, I think I’ll make some. 😀 I just remembered another way my mom used green tomatoes. She diced and mixed green tomatoes to cut okra. She battered and fried them together. And now I want that too. lol
Fried green tomatoes aint nothing new to this arkansas boy we is in the south too mrs.Deen .Had some 2 days ago and fried up some fresh okra from the garden yesterday too. Thanks paul
N.E.Arkansas Trash Trucks&Lottery. I know what you mean! Nothing new for this Texas gal. As a kid, I used to go to our garden, pick the tomatos and bring them into the house. That evening mom would fry up a mess of them. Yummy
The next step is to make Green Tomato Sauce for Mayan Pizza! Mayan Pizza will have anything green on it: Oregano, Parsley Flakes, even Crushed or cut up Mint Leaves, plus Green Peppars! But at the exact Center of this perfectly Round Mayan Pizza will be something roundly Black(like the Black Petal on a Queen Ann's Lace!) It could be a Black Olive or a rounded segment of Black Fig, or even a Blackberry(but not an electronic Blackberry!) Cheetzeneetza Teetza Weetza! Make and Eat MAYAN PIZZA !
Damn, I am only 32yrs. old, looked up best way to cook fried green tomatoes , and found Miss Paula Deen. I have watched her cooking show's in the past, but DAMN , something has changed, She is starting to look pretty fine for an older lady. Much Respect
My grandma & great grandma used to always make green tomato mincemeat at the end of the gardening season.... it tasted very good! another way to use green tomatoes...
I have seen this video a thousand times but never watched it. So glad I did today! I have been frying green tomatoes for a while but using cornmeal also. I was looking for a recipe that doesn't use cornmeal and I can't wait to try this. My family doesn't like them much with cornmeal and neither do I so thank you for sharing Paula 😍.
I salt my maters(lol) let sit on paper towels to get rid of moisture. Flour them, then egg mixture, and finish with Italian breadcrumbs. My sauce is mayo, sour cream and horseradish(paprika optional). Yummy
Paula, the first thing that you did by slicing up those green tomatoes you put yours on a baking sheet with paper towels, my grandmother put it in her large cauldron in the sink then she put salt all over it and let it drain in the sink. I’m going to say around 30 minutes or longer. She wanted to make sure that that water was completely drained out. She did not want her lard to splatter all over.😁
The one time I visited Atlanta I tried fried green tomatoes and they were amazing. I have tried several times to make them back home in Minnesota but every effort was a complete failure. You have given me hope to try again!
I eat in trouble making green tomatoes. I pick too many and don’t leave many on the bush to ripe..My husband fusses cause I pick too many.. Love you bunches MissPaula.
my home town has a tomato festivle every summer. Fried Green Tomatoes are my favorite food!!!! oh and btw I just love how she has a deep fryer built in to her kitchen lol!
I'm a Jersey girl born in raised however my mother's mother was in Mississippi native I ate a lot of fried things growing up and I had our teach me how to make fried green tomatoes and okra however the one day I did it with her I remember using bread crumbs and it was a really good it was egg and bread crumbs little salt and that was it
Has anyone ever tried a smoked version of these? Just a thought. My mother and her Alabama kinfolk always fry these in corn meal; great with fried fish and a side of cole slaw. Yum!
yummm I luv fried green tomatoes! I can do without the relish cuz I am not a big raw onion eater. I think fried green tomatoes are delicious all by themselves.
