/ kantelar
Pauliina Lerche is one of the many Finnish folk musicians who have their roots in the small North Karelian village of Rääkkylä near the Russian border. Her musical career began in the original line-up of the most famous of the folk bands stemming from this small village, Värttinä, but she had early on found the musical direction she wanted to pursue. Studies at the Folk Music Department of the Sibelius Academy only served to strengthen this musical vision and after graduating in 2002, she has quickly become one of the most personal ambassadors of Finnish folk music on the world music scene. Pauliina is a multi-instrumentalist whose instruments include accordion, violin, kantele, deltar and her own voice. She composes, arranges and writes lyrics for her own material in which she combines her solid background in the Karelian tradition with influences from both world and popular music.

Lyrics of the verses are in finnish so wrote them, but the chorus is in some other language someone else can write it verse 1: Tulkaa tytöt tanssimahan, nuoret veljet notkumahan, tuokaa tuulet tullessanne, ja valoa valtiaalle Taas on kuukauet kuuluuneet ja viikot monet vierineet kun (sytysyiset?) sydänyöt yhdessä me valvoimme Meillon töitä täynnä päivät, ohi viikot vierivät, harvoin juttelehen yhymme, tanssimahan tahomme verse 2: Tulkaa tytöt tanssimahan, nuoret veljet notkumahan, harvoin jutteleen yhymme, tanssimahan tahomme Taas on kuukauet kuuluuneet ja viikot monet vierineet, kun talviset tähtiset yöt yhdessä me valvoimme verse 4: En käy enää liinapäänä, mennyt olen miehelään, ei oo naitu Marjaakaan, jo Minja lasta liekuttaa

Ra Ra the chorus is in Russian - "вот и калина дай, вот и малина дай"/"vot i kalyna dai, vot i malina dai". It's pretty much nonsense if translated literally. "Kalyna" (Viburnum opulus) is a fruit-bearing shrub that's held in high regard in Slavic folklore, often times used as a metaphor for feminine beauty; the same applies to "malina" (Rubus - raspberry).

@Nightweaver5 Wholly agreed... from Brazil, I say the same - perhaps for some people like us the Voice of the Origins, the Blood, just speak louder within us than what happens around us, on our immediate surroundings. In general, I live and breathe the Old World, it just saves me from a meaningless life among a "people" that is just a bunch of unconnected persons without a sense of their past or memory. THIS TRUELY IS MUSIC.

to end all disputes about the attire, she wears modernized (stylized if some prefer that term) Karelian clothing. I would not call them authentic due to coloring and embroidery she chose but it generally keeps with our traditional folk dresses. Same applies to her jewelery. As she is from Finnish Karelia all her clothing bears a touch of Finnish style, hence the possible lack of authenticity. Or perhaps she just did not wish to bother herself:)

Wow! What a great and original song!! :) I love all these interesting reinterpretations of traditional Karelian folk music (Värttinä, Sari Kaasinen, Pauliina Lerche..). How is the surname Lerche pronounced in finnish, by the way??

Sorry, I just made a small research. Peter Lerche is finnish. The name anyway is german (its a name of a bird). His family has aristocratical history since at least 19. century (Nils Lerche (+1986) poet, Leopold Lerche (+1927) - businessmen, Fredrik Lerche (+1899) - general governor, senator. His family came to Finland via Denmark -> Russia .

Actually that paisley pattern of the fabric is Indian - the teardrop in the center is a stylized mango, if I remember correctly. So that would make sense of the interpretation. But the dress style is as you say very traditional to Finland.

@ANARCHYGOD2012 The latest genetic studies of Finns (as well as others) are surely interesting. The picture they give about the gene distributions and thus past transfers and movements is complicated and 'patchworky - very intriguing and surprising - e.g., there is a close genetic connection with the Netherlands. However, the way you speak using 19th century concepts, such as 'blood' and seem to tie genes with culture - reveal the fact that you are clearly not up to the level of discussion.

Suomen kansallinen musiikki on oikeesti hienoa musiikkia.
