If you only have room for one muscadine, Paulk is a great choice. It is self-fertile, tastes great and has a dry scar which means it will keep very well. This vine came as a tiny slip of a thing three years ago and is now starting to produce nicely. The hardest thing is letting them stay on the vine and get really ripe and sweet, since I keep sampling them everytime I walk by!

Very nice. I'm considering purchasing Paulk from Isons. I currently have 6 muscadine growing in a 50-foot greenhouse in the Seattle area (8b). I planted them 3 years ago and had a great harvest this year. I LOVE their flavor, especially the purple varieties. It's a unique addition to the regular wine/table grapes I'm also growing. I'm growing them in a greenhouse because I feared that my winters might be too cold for them, but now that I see you're successfully growing them outdoors in 7a I might consider planting some outdoors as well.

They should be hardy there, but I think the biggest challenge in the Seattle area will be the lack of hot weather so they may just not ripen in time. Growing them in a greenhouse should certainly help fix that issue.

@@GardeningwithZiggy I think you're probably right. I have regular table/wine grapes growing outside and in the greenhouse, and the ones in the greenhouse started flowering about 6 weeks ago while the ones outside are just starting to flower. That's how much of a difference a greenhouse makes here in Seattle. My muscadine vines are just beginning to flower, which means if I grow them outside they probably wouldn't start flowering until late July, which wouldn't leave enough time to reach maturity before frost. I ended up buying 3 Paulk from Isons, and they sent 4. So I removed three grape varieties that I didn't like very much, and replaced them with the Paulk. I also removed my Ruby Crisp (which I didn't like at all) muscadine vine and replaced it with the fourth Paulk. It's the fourth season for my Supreme muscadine and it is loaded with blossoms so it looks like I will finally get my first harvest. I told myself that if they don't produce this year then I will replace them with something else. I was also planning on replacing my Darlene muscadine, but I see that it finally has a few flowers on it.

@@firecloud77 Do you have any self-fertile or male muscadines flowering along with your Supreme and Darlene this year? Both of those are just female, so you'll need pollen from either a male or self-fertile. Paulk is self fertile so if you don't currently have a pollen source, that will work eventually when they mature. I had Darlene and got rid of it since it was so much less productive. I've added Hall as my bronze muscadine.

@@GardeningwithZiggy Yes, I have three self-fertile varieties that started producing fruit last year -- Cowart, Ison, and Dixie Red. The two female plants -- Supreme and Darlene -- are finally flowering this year for the first time. But Darlene has far fewer flowers than Supreme. So it looks like I am going to experience the same low yields that you have for Darlene. I was inspired to grow Darlene because of all the glowing reviews that I read 4 years ago. I'm looking forward to seeing if my tastebuds agree with their claims.

Hello, I’m thinking of growing grape this year and looking for very sweet & crunchy variety, but not sure which grape variety I can grow for small yard. I live in Texas. Do muscadine Paulk taste very sweet & crunchy like grapes we buy in store? Thanks 🙏

Hi. Muscadines aren't really like the grapes you get from the store. They've got a bit of a wild taste to them (bred out of most table grapes in favor of just sweet flavor), which I really like. They are very sweet, but they do have a thicker skin and almost all of them are seeded varieties. I love them, they are very healthy and great for jelly or wine as well. But they are definitely different from common commercial grapes so it would be good if you could get some to sample before deciding to grow them yourself.

That trellis will not hold that plant in the coming years. Am I wrong?

Lol, you are not wrong. That was just my "starter trellis" to get the arms developed and then it surprised me by putting on such a nice crop. I've added horizontal poles between the t-posts for this year to support the crop, which looks to be 25lbs or so, but eventually I'll have to go much more heavy duty since these muscadines are capable of 50-60lbs of fruit per vine which I might hit next year.

They are the ripest when the glossy skin gets darker and looses is glossiness.lol

Yes. I left some on and had them even riper and they were dull at that point and sweeter. The problem is the squirrels, raccoons, etc. love them as well, so sometimes harvesting at least some a bit early is better than getting none later on.
