This is very helpful thanks! I have been clearing an acre of all males and when im almost all done ive found one female. I will try to propagate this and make it more civilized not as wild and weedy

Is there a way to tell from the seed if it's going to be male, female or perfect? I have a bunch of seeds from a wild Muscadine that I want to plant, but I don't want to have to grow all of them for years to dtermine which to keep.

@@lindawahner Sorry, but there is no way for you to know before they start flowering.

Very instructional. Probably too late to grab some from a nursery this year but I plan on it next year. But I’ve successfully rooted and transplanted some wild ones off my land. Is there a way to tell if they’re male, female or self fertile while they’re young? I’d hate to put a lot of time into them and get no results

Wild grapes will be either male or female and there is no way to know before flowering which type it will be.

Good to see this very informative video. I was wondering if there is a consensus as to whether most pollination is a result of wind borne pollen or pollen bearing insects? From my own observations, taking wind directions during bloom into account, I would lean toward the insects.
@patrickconner6532
@patrickconner6532 3 года назад
I believe muscadine evolved to be insect pollinated. The blooms are scented, and pollen is sticky and rather sparse. The stigma is rounded, small, and wet, rather than being large and feathery like most wind-pollinated plants. We use mesh bags to protect our crosses and almost never get set on bagged flowers of female vines without adding pollen. Self-fertile vines, however, may pollinate at some level without insects since the pollen is right there.

I have seen neat and orderly muscadine plants in south Georgia, and now in your video. I should have done that but I was originally just going for a small PVC box pergola in the corner of my back yard that used quick-growing muscadines as the shade plant. Well, I'm in the second year of growth and I really have the growth...very thick, and now I see extensive production between the 3 varieties I bought and planted (too close together). Yeah, it's helter-skelter vine meanderings. I'm using a thin vinyl webbing for the vine support and it's held out well. My question: Is there a chance that, after harvesting in late August, can I trim back everything from the root trunk, curl and shelter (tarp) them from winter frosts, and then reroute these trunks for a more orderly array of vines and growth in the Spring for next season's production? Or are the trunks already set in the form that they'll always be from now on--unable to bend and pose very much? I don't mind removing the webbing, it'd be easy to snip out or replace in the winter.

You would have to wait until late in the season so the vine didn't bud back out again in the fall. They can bend for the first year or two, but it gets harder as they grow larger.

Hi Patrick! To yield muscadines does a Early Fry muscadine need another male or perfect plant? O will they yield on own?
@patrickconner6532
@patrickconner6532 8 месяцев назад
Early Fry is a female vine and will need a self-fertile vine to pollinate it. I recommend something mid-season or late to extend your harvest. Perhaps 'Paulk' or 'Ison'.

Thanks! I appreciate your timely reply!✨❣ I recieved my Fry saplings recently (In India) and had decent idea that Fry would not bear on it's own without a male/ complete partner. But the seller was reluctant and insisted that it bears fruits. And now I am left with this plant and no male plant in this part of the world. I actually also need thoughts if one can pollinate Fry with Thomcords? Will they?@@patrickconner6532

I have wild muscadine vines all over my property. I had to take out a tree with a very large vine in it I ran a trellis 20' each side of the vine and it runs the entire length of the trellis. This vine appears to be a male, not a sign of a grape on it in three years. In the middle of the right 20' I have a female. My question is do I need a forty foot long male vine to pollenate this female vine. They intertwine and make pruning very difficult. I will take your advice and plant a self-fertile vine on the left section next year
@patrickconner6532
@patrickconner6532 2 года назад
If I have understood your question, I would cut out the male and plant a self-fertile to pollinate the female. Any self-fertile should work. Wild male vines are normally excessively rambunctious and it will be difficult to control.

@@patrickconner6532 I have 2 perfect muscadine plants due for delivery in early November from Ison's. I didn't have any wild males BTW, they were store bought triumph males. And Summit females from the store. Thanks for the advice.

can a perfect cluster fertilize a female cluster? fascinating video BTW! :)
@patrickconner6532
@patrickconner6532 2 года назад
Yes, most commercial vineyards are a mixture of perfect and female vines, with the females being pollinated by the perfect vines. The number of each you need has not been well studied, but I like to have female vines no more than 2 vines away from a potential pollinizer.
