Pavillion Rouge is Chateau Margaux’s second wine which was first released in the 17th century, but the name Pavillon Rouge was given to it in 1908. Previously, it was just labelled "2eme vin" of Chateau Margaux.
Pavillon Rouge was not produced between the 1930s to the 1970s and it was restarted in 1977. Chateau Margaux's vineyard is composed of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and small amount of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc.
The grapes for Pavillon Rouge are sourced from the same parcels as the Margaux Grand Vin but from younger vines. The 1986 vintage was the first time the winery decided to thin out the bunches in the plots of the youngest and most productive vines, which resulted in a stricter selection of high-quality fruit. The grapes were manually harvested, barrel fermented and then aged in 50% new oak for 18-24 months.

Absolutely love the review! I visited Chateau Margaux last month and tasted the grand vin plus pavilion rouge. I was stunned by the elegance and subtle power of them, the wines were already showing tremendous promise even when they are young (11 and 15 vintage). I absolutely agree with your review! Cheers!

Hi Tony, I would be interested to see a video about the aging process of wines. What can you expect from older wines? When is the best time to open certain wines? Which wines are best to store? Do you prefer to drink aged wines from the bottle or from a carafe? I think you have enough experience and knowledge to tell something about this. Cheers

RB: good idea. I will try to do a video on this in the next couple of months. Cheers!

Tony, your philosophy of Trophy-Wines sounds like music to me. I didn't taste the 'Pavillon Rouge 86'. But my experience, regarding old Bordeaux and your excellent tasting note makes 94 points much more realistic. However, there are more reviewers who have difficulty in estimating the real potential of quality Bordeaux (or quality wine in general). If a Bordeaux develops tertiary flavors, it often becomes difficult when you are used to young wines. Too often the conclusion is drawn, this wine has had its best time. That is often doubtful, as you now notice with the 'Pavillon Rouge 86'. It can't be someone's taste, okay tastes differ. But that's another story. Cheers!

Marcus: I think the problem is that if you judge aged wines like new wines, of course they are different. But aged wines are supposed to taste different than young wines. I believe many people don't rate aged wines correctly because they don't have enough personal experience with aged wines. It is a totally different thing just tasting a wine vs drinking it with a meal over an entire night. Cheers!

I enjoyed your interpretations, the oldest bordeaux I have tasted is a Sarget de gruaud-larose 1998 Saint Julien at their chateau with a wine pairing dinner. I was excellent with the food they prepared. Back in April of 2018

Thanks for a great video. Indeed an excellent reference Margaux that’s much more accessible earlier than grand vin. Just had the 2000 last night and felt it’s in the early drinking window especially if you like mid-age. Very ethereal (or some say temperamental) as we slowly went through the bottle.

Great take home message. Ratings can be helpful but can also steer people towards or away from wines for the wrong reasons.

Robert: everyone, especially more experienced drinkers, should trust their own palate instead of someone else's. I have often heard people disregard a wine just because a wine critic gave it a low score. If the price is right, I would still take a chance. Cheers!

Can you tell me a little information about the age of the vines used for the wine?
@TrophyWineHunter
@TrophyWineHunter 9 месяцев назад
Kien: thank you for viewing my video. Good question but I am not sure I have the correct answer for you. I think Chateau Margaux does not distinguish which plots are used for Chateau Margaux and Pavillon. So they look each year at what the different plots produce and whichever ones are highest quality goes into Chateau Margaux. Then then next bunch of plots (about 30%) goes into Pavillion. So it is the same vines but I would think the older vines mostly go into Chateau Margaux and the younger side vines go into Pavillion. I believe most vines at Chateau Margaux are between 20-65 years in age. Will see if any of my viewers/subscribers have a better answer. Cheers!

@@TrophyWineHunter Thank you for giving me information about it, I see its price is quite similar to the top 2nd growth wines, leoville las cases or ducru beaucailou you see their quality is similar, maybe super 2nd growth.

@@kienvucao8390 Yes, I think Pavillon Rouge is a very good quality wine. I think whether you think it is on par with LLC or Ducru is a matter of opinion but pretty close in terms of quality. Cheers!
